Creating your account In order to start your online application you need to create your own account. Once your account has been created it is not possible to change your email address. It is therefore important to choose a valid email address that you check on a regular basis, as this is the way we will communicate with you regarding your application. Also check your junk mail folder or adjust your email settings to prevent emails being directed to your junk mail folder. Please make sure to send all emails regarding your application from the email address that you’ve created your account with. You can complete your application and submit it at once, but you can also do it in intervals. The system automatically saves all information that you have entered.

To Do List

1 The instructions will help you to complete your application successfully. Please read them carefully before

you proceed.

2 Make sure to give full and detailed information while completing your application form. Take extra care in filling out your correct contact details (such as postal and e-mail address) to ensure smooth communication.

Ad 1. Programme information Please indicate the Master’s programme you wish to apply for. If your Bachelor’s programme fits another Master’s programme you can apply for a second programme. If not, make sure to leave the second choice programme field blank. To change your programme information, click on the ‘Update my answers’ on the top right.

If you apply for two programmes the following applies:

You need to provide a letter of motivation for each programme. Please upload the two letters to the online application system in one Word file; All other documents can be submitted once; You need to pay the handling fee only once; The Admissions Committee will start reviewing your first choice programme. If you have been rejected for your first choice programme, the Committee will continue reviewing your second choice programme; If you have been admitted for your first choice programme we will not review your second choice programme; As a result the total selection procedure will last eight weeks maximum; If you are admitted for both programmes you can only reserve your place for one programme.

Ad 2. Personal details

All fields with an asterix (*) are required fields; Please don’t use capitals, e.g. please type John Really instead of JOHN REALLY; Your family name/surname is the name under which your file will be registered. Make sure that this is the name on your transcripts and references in order to avoid any confusion. You should also use this name on any correspondence.

Ad 3. Contact details Email: once your account has been created it is not possible to change your email address. Email will be the primary means of communication throughout the process. Address: please fill in a permanent address. Make sure to provide us with the correct contact details to ensure smooth communication.

4. Educational background Ad 4a. Current/most recent higher Details concerning your Bachelor’s university programme. If you have obtained or are enrolled in a Master’s, premaster or other programme, please enter details of the Master’s, premaster or other programme here. All fields with an asterix (*) are required fields.

Ad 4b. Previous higher education Applies only if you have obtained or are enrolled in a Master’s or premaster’s programme. Please fill out details of your Bachelor’s university programme here. All fields with an asterix (*) are required fields.

Ad 4c. Secondary education Details concerning your secondary school education or high school education. It is compulsory to upload your secondary school/high school diploma on page 15/16.

Ad 5. English proficiency All non-native speakers of English are required to demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and undertake written work in English. Students who are considered as native English speakers are those who have obtained their diploma in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America. All non-native speakers of English are required to submit a valid English test score which is not older than 2 years.

Exemptions Applicants who took English at the Dutch pre-university secondary education (VWO) level or at the German secondary education (Abitur) level are exempt from the requirement.

Minimum scores

TOEFL test: 92, at least 20 on each sub-score (237 computer-based/580 paper-based test, reporting number 0398); IELTS-test: 6.5, at least 6 on each sub-score; Cambridge International Examinations: A (FCE), B (CAE), B (CPE).

If you have already taken one of these tests it is required to upload a score report. You may either upload a scan of the original score report or a print screen of the test scores. If you have not taken one of these tests yet, you are required to fill out the date on which you will take the test.

Ad 6. GMAT/GRE All students need to take either a GMAT or GRE test.

GMAT: MSc Business Studies, MSc Accountancy and Control GRE: MSc Economics, MSc Econometrics, MSc Business Economics (all tracks), MSc Actuarial and Mathematical Finance.

Exemptions Students with a Dutch degree are exempted for the GMAT/GRE entry requirement. Applicants from one of our partner universities are also exempted from the GMAT/GRE requirement. For a list of partner universities see the appendix.

Minimum scores No minimum score is required for the GMAT or GRE test. The average GMAT score of students starting in the programmes is 600.

If you have already taken the GRE or GMAT test please upload your score report and mention the scores in the relevant fields. If you have already taken the GRE or GMAT test but haven’t received the official score report yet, it is sufficient to type your test scores in the relevant fields. If you have not taken the GRE or GMAT test yet, you are required to fill out the date on which you will take the test.

Ad 7. Financial Plan Scholarships . The Dutch Ministry of Education and offers scholarships covering costs of living expenses within the framework of cultural agreements between the and other countries. Information is available from the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country or via Grantfinder and the Nuffic. . In certain cases it is possible for EU students to receive a monthly student grant from the Dutch government (i.e. DUO-IB Group). Please check their website for further information. . You can also contact the Ministry for Higher Education in your own country. There may be funds or foundations available for students planning to study abroad.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship The University of Amsterdam aims to attract the world’s brightest students to its international classrooms. Outstanding students from outside the can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS).

3 Carefully check the documents you are required to submit and upload them one by one. Applications will not be considered until all required material has been received. All material submitted should be in English or include English translations. Please note that during this stage of the admissions procedure, it is sufficient to send in scanned copies of the documents required. However, as soon as we offer you a place in one of our programmes you will need to send in certified and officially translated copies by regular post.

Please send your documents as a Word or pdf file, Jpg files are not accepted. Please import jpg/jpeg files yourself in pdf or doc file. Documents should not exceed 2 MB. Please do not upload compulsory documents more than once or any documents that are not required (e.g. awards, etc). Ad page 6, Motivation Please make sure your motivation letter does not exceed 1 page. The letter should give answer to the following questions: Why did you choose your study programme? Why did you choose to study abroad? Why did you choose to study at the University of Amsterdam? Do you have any ideas about your future career path?

Are you applying for two programmes? Please add your motivation for the second choice programme in the same document.

Ad page 7, Transcript of grades current/most recent higher education A certified copy of your university Bachelor’s, Master’s or premasters transcript in the original language. A certified copy is a copy of the original document stamped and signed by your university or by a notary. If you’re still enrolled in the programme please send your preliminary transcript of grades.

Ad page 8, Translation of transcript of grades current/most recent higher education Not applicable if your transcript is in Dutch, English or German or if the transcript in the original language contains the English translation. Translation should be in English and made by a sworn translator.

Ad page 17, English test score All non-native speakers of English who can't get exempted from the English language requirement are required to submit a valid English test score report which is not older than 2 years. Please note that we need to receive an official score report from the test institution if you get admitted and will enrol in the programme. The Faculty of Economics and Business institution code for TOEFL is 0398.

Ad page 18, Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) motivation letter For non-EU students only. Please make sure your motivation letter does not exceed 1 page. The letter should give answer to the following questions: What makes you an excellent student? Why should you be granted the scholarship?

Ad page 18 GMAT or GRE score (EU applicants only) A GMAT score is required for applicants to the MSc Business Studies and MSc Accountancy and Control. A GRE score is required for applicants to the MSc in Business Economics, Economics, Econometrics, Actuarial Science and Mathematical Finance. Invite your referees to submit their references online and track their progress. In this section you need to introduce your referee(s) by giving their name and email address. Your referee(s) are current or former teachers. He or she will receive an automatic email by Embark and will be invited to write a recommendation letter and upload it to the Embark system.

Please first inform your referee(s) about the procedure before you introduce him or her in the Embark system. We need to receive the recommendation letters three weeks after you have submitted your application. It is not possible to upload recommendation letters yourself.

5 Use the application inspector tool to check if you have answered all the required questions and have uploaded all the necessary documents. Make sure that your application form is complete and ready to be submitted online.

6 Before you can submit the application form, you need to pay the € 100 handling fee online. Handling fee is charged for your diploma assessment and the evaluation of your application. Payment is only possible by
