Following the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in the beautiful monastery church, a traditional Serbian picnic was enjoyed by all. The campers put on another stellar performance of Serbian song and dance, and music went on into the evening. At the end of the liturgy His Grace Bishop Longin addressed His Holiness, welcoming him to the New Gracanica monastery and the Diocese of New Gracanica and Midwestern America, expressing his great joy that His Holiness, for the first time since his enthronement, had served the liturgy in this monastery. His Holiness addressed the faithful present and pointed out in particular the beauty of the New Gracanica monastery which, with its beauty, serves today to the pride of the Serbian people. His Holiness, in his homily, stressed the importance of the presence of the Serbian people in America and throughout the world. Many are in the diaspora not of their own will, but in this, he noted, we see God’s will, for without the presence of Orthodox Christians in these areas there would be no possibility for Orthodox mission. His Holiness, in his homily, also stressed the importance of unity among the Serbian people and the Serbian Orthodox Church in region but also worldwide. An agape meal followed. Rev. FAMILY LIFE beautifully and lovingly of the church being A recent conversation I had with someone in my parish brought up the very important topic of regular church attendance. He reminisced that his parents Orthodox Maternity Home seeks Director made sure that he and his siblings attending Sunday Divine Liturgy regardless Martha and Mary House in Escondido, CA, the only Orthodox Maternity Home of how late their previous evening’s activity went; there was no other choice. He in the Unites States, is seeking a strong, Orthodox, female House Director to fulfill reiterated with a grateful expression on his face. This was the case with most a critical need: ministering to women seeking adoption in anonymity. The ideal people in our community at that time. candidate must be an Orthodox Christian in good standing, financially stable, self- Indeed, experience has shown that children come to appreciate structure sufficient and unencumbered by outside priorities. Experience in fundraising, public and firm parenting skills later in their adult years. Children need to realize that speaking and community outreach is essential. Candidates should possess the ability they have been born into a world that has rules and that their parents are the to manage a household, screen potential clients as well as coordinate activities with guardians of those rules. They also need to know that there is a principle called adoption agencies, adopting parents and professional counselors. We need to fill this “sowing and reaping.” In other words, bad behavior will reap a punishment. position before December 1, 2012. Please send your inquiries to Fr. Andrew Cuneo Parents have to be firm because children seem to be born with an innate desire at: [email protected]. to push their limits with their parents to see just what they can get away with. Parents should never let their children get away with defiance. When a child knows that his parents are firm and uncompromising about their rules, then they will obey. Children that have been brought up by firm parents grow up more self- assured and confident. There is security in knowing that one’s parents are there to guide them and will not let them go astray. If our parents were raised this way then I ask this question: why is it that we today are not raising our children with the same principle, that is, with regular church attendance on Sundays and Feast Days? Today, more than ever before, we have modern gadgets at our disposal to assist us with our house chores and communications in order to save us time. What do we do with the time we have saved? I am well aware of human frailties and exertions imposed upon us by the character of our age, e.g. demands of workplace, catching up with house work, sleeping in after a long and tiring week, etc. What about Sunday morning sports activities? More and more parents are tied to Sunday sports activities with the rationalization that they help their children stay away from substance abuse and free time that often leads to ruthless behavior. This reasoning comes from care and desire for children to live a healthy and drug free lifestyle. This is an admirable desire for one’s children. However, these same results can be achieved by attending and participating in the Sunday and Feast Day Liturgies, not to mention the spiritual benefits. The question: “Can an Orthodox Christian grow spiritually without attending the church?” should be rephrased and asked this way: “Can an Orthodox Christian afford to lose all the benefits and rewards that come from regular church attendance and participation in the Holy Sacraments?” According to a study done by the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, people that attend church regularly tend to be Bishop Maxim sends Delegation healthier than those who don’t go to church.
