The CJO presents over 20 subscription concerts each season in Columbus, Ohio. Bill Kiefaber By incorporating contemporary arrangements into its repertoire and commissioning new arrangements and masterworks for jazz orchestra, the CJO promotes the future of big band jazz and cultivates the ADMINISTRATION dynamic, adventurous spirit that has kept audiences coming back again and again. The CJO has toured Europe and has collaborated with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet Press Southworth III Byron Stripling Columbus, Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Chief Executive Officer CJO Artistic Director Opera Columbus, and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. Yvette Boyer Mary Manos Accountant Jazz Academy Coordinator & CJO Librarian The CJO is led by world-renowned band leader and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, former lead trumpet for the Count Basie Orchestra. Stripling has been a featured soloist with orchestras including the Boston Alexa Brennan Pete Mills Pops, Cincinnati Pops, the National Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. He has been a featured Education & Outreach Coordinator Program Director, soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and performs at jazz festivals throughout the world. He has performed and Jazz at The Lincoln Theatre Alex Burgoyne recorded extensively with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, and Lionel Hampton, among others, as well as the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the GRP All-Star Big Band. This is only the second Louis Tsamous time in the orchestra’s storied history that a Principal Pops Conductor has been named. In this new role, Zach Compston Director of Affiliate Musicians Stripling succeeds Emmy, Oscar, Tony, Grammy, Golden Globe and Pulitzer prize-winning composer/ Director of Education & conductor Marvin Hamlisch. She has performed with a variety of instrumentation, from a duo to a symphony, and is a frequent guest of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Kelly is a favorite among Columbus jazz fans. She was voted Best Vocalist in Columbus by the Columbus Dispatch 2006 Readers Poll. John Petric, when writing for the Columbus Dispatch, praised her “…rapid-fire phrasing, practically turning the lyrics into liquid sounds. Amazing.” Kelly has opened for Sarah Vaughn, Bob James, Bob Newhart, Joan Rivers, Tito Puente, Tony Bennett and many more. Kelly also sings with the group Brasileira, performing Brazilian standards and favorites in Portuguese. In 2012, Kelly left her home city of Columbus, Ohio and moved to York, Pennsylvania. Jazz has played a major role in bringing people together. It’s a language, an expression of ideas, a means of communicating. When jazz speaks, it Leo Manzari conveys thoughts.
