The Economics of East and West German Cars
The Economics of East and West German Cars Free Market and Command economies produce and distribute goods & services using vastly different methods. Prior to reading the documents, consider the following: a. What is the significance of car production for individuals and society? b. What is the significance of car ownership for individuals and society? c. How are cars distributed in society? In other words, who makes decisions about pricing and allocation of this good within society? Review and annotate the documents. Consider each document for its purpose, context, point of view and potential audience. What clues do the documents provide about life in East and West Germany, Cold War economic systems, and current economic issues? Use the documents to evaluate the outcomes associated with command and free market economies. Your response should include... ● A clear, well-stated claim/argument in response to the prompt. ● At least two well-developed body paragraphs in support of your claim. ● Analysis of at least seven documents to support your argument. West: Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) East: German Democratic Republic (GDR) 1 Document 1: “How German cars beat British motors - and kept going.” BBC August, 2013 In August 1945 the British Army sent a major called Ivan Hirst to take control of the giant Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, which had been built under the Nazis to produce 'people's cars' for the German masses. Ignoring his sceptical superiors, Hirst could see the potential amid the shattered debris of the Wolfsburg factory. Rebuilding Volkswagen, he thought, would be a step towards rehabilitating Germany as a prosperous, peaceful European ally. -

Basic Motoring
Basic motoring The Evolution of the Modern Ultralight Economy car. Honda Zest Preface I began writing this book because no one else has covered the subject comprehensively, there are a lot of books and web pages on individual models that go into minute often extremely boring details but there is nothing to link all of this class of car together that show how the modern ultralight economy car we use today has evolved. First I must explain what I mean by the rather long winded term ultralight economy car. The type of car or if you prefer automobile, that I refer to below can be classified today by many labels, minicar, economy car, city car, mini compact if you are from USA or an A-segment mini car if you are a European official. None of these describe exactly the type of car I have included in this text. Yes, they were economy cars but very small economy cars with an engine capacity range with some latitude; from 360 cc to 1000 cc. Some could be classed as mini or city cars but not all are and some could be classed as microcars, but they were and are all a relatively low cost form of transport for a great many millions of people around the world in the past and increasingly so today. Page 1 Basic Motoring Austin Voiturette 1909 Introduction. Before the advent of the autobahn, autostrada and motorway, most European urban based car owners and most of those living in the country were content to drive around at a moderate speed, which was all that road conditions would allow. -
2 Mauto the Collection
MAUTO: THE COLLECTION From carriages to Formula 1: when cars tell the story of the evolution of modern society The importance of the collection that occupies the 19,000 sq. metres of space of the National Automobile Museum of Turin lies not only in the value of the vintage vehicles, but goes beyond the object as such to touch the history of the companies, nations and cultures that have crossed two centuries which have been crucial to the progress of mankind. Designed by the Franco- Swiss set designer François Confino, the original layout was created to give the museum’s 200 vehicles, from over 80 different car brands, the best possible exposure, through an itinerary divided into 30 sections, making it possible to precisely define themes and specific historical period, offering visitors a clear narrative sequence, with enchanting staging and titles, from the very beginning to the present day. The journey begins on the second floor, where the starring role is played by the vehicles that have become symbols of the 20th century, descending to the grand Piazza, where today’s relationship between the world, all of us, and the automobile, is examined in further detail. For Piedmont’s major city, in particular, this isn’t merely a matter of manufacturing, it is a cultural and social phenomenon, enhanced and expressed in the transformation of the Museum, which celebrates Turin as Italy’s automobile capital, from industry to design, from planning to engineering, from the research centres to production. GENESIS From man to machine: the history of a dream. A tribute to the many pioneers who for the last five centuries have been looking for a way of moving and transporting things without depending on the physical strength of animals. -
