Gordon In this study I present a new understanding of Vietnamese existentialism during the period 1954-1975, the period between the Geneva Accords and the fall of Saigon in 1975. The prevailing view within Vietnam sees Vietnamese existentialism during this period as a morally bankrupt philosophy that is a mere imitation of European versions of existentialism. I argue to the contrary that while Vietnamese existential philosophy and European existentialism share some themes, Vietnamese existentialism during this period is rooted in the particularities of Vietnamese traditional culture and social structures and in the lived experience of Vietnamese people over Vietnam’s 1000-year history of occupation and oppression by foreign forces. I also argue that Vietnamese existentialism is a profoundly moral philosophy, committed to justice in the social and political spheres. Heavily influenced by Vietnamese Buddhism, Vietnamese existential philosophy, I argue, places emphasis on the concept of a non-substantial, relational, and social self and a harmonious and constitutive relation between the self and other. The Vietnamese philosophers argue that oppressions of the mind must be liberated and that social structures that result in violence must be changed. Consistent with these ends Vietnamese existentialism proposes a multi-perspective iii ontology, a dialectical view of human thought, and a method of meditation that releases the mind to be able to understand both the nature of reality as it is and the means to live a moral, politically engaged life.

Lapidus DOI: 10.18355/XL.2020.13.03.09 Abstract The relationship between religion and science has been very diverse and dynamic in the thousands-year-long history of human thoughts, many times seen as the incompatible terms signifying very opposite realities. In European history, the era of so called or perceived “Dark-Middle-Ages” was dominated by, what is much later defined as the strong antagonism between them. It is true that in the name of religion, some books of ancient Greek and Renaissance philosophers were burned, and some scientists were trialed or even killed. It is therefore necessary to avoid the caricatures and present the more complex view on this matter. The situation in Europe has changed significantly in the 20th century, after the era of the 19th century Rationalism, which has started the process of understanding of the roots of the relationship between science and religion in a new way, offering thus an opportunity of a meaningful dialogue and cooperation rather than antagonism and strict opposition. In Western Europe today, many scientists and theologians are engaged in ongoing and productive dialogue about the relationship of faith and science. In the pre-colonial period, Vietnamese traditional culture was generally Confucian and Buddhist. Then the Confucian traditional education was replaced by the new national education system under the influence of certain Western model. While introducing Marxism, a lot of changes appeared in the relationship between religion and science in the country.

    CHAPTER 3: VIETNAMESE SOCIALIST REALISM: THE ARTS OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF VIEÄT-NAM (THE NORTH) 1945-1975 Figure 1: Communal House at Döông Xaù Village, Gia Laâm District in Haø Noäi’s outskirts, photograph taken by Boi Tran Huynh. 131 This chapter examines the change in Vietnamese aesthetics in the Democratic Republic of Vieät-Nam, hereafter ‘the North’, from 1945 to 1975. In this era, Socialist Realism was established and applied to every aspect of the arts, which became a vehicle to serve the ideology of Marxism. Its relations shaped Vieät- Nam’s international agenda with the Communist bloc, especially with the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China. During this period, Vieät-Nam adopted and developed these two influences while the French influence became subtler. The conflict between North and South Vieät-Nam led to an emphasis on the fabrication of new aesthetics, aimed toward forging a national identity within the orbit of international Communism. Simultaneously, attempts were made to eliminate individualism in the art of Modernism with the assertion that it represented western decadent bourgeois art. Interestingly, it was in this context that a number of artists deviated from the Socialist mainstream and, through personal style and expression, produced artworks that counterbalanced the official view. Also, two private art collectors established themselves as alternative patrons to the arts. COMMUNISM AS A WAY OUT OF COLONIALISM: Hoà Chí Minh, (fig2) founded the Democratic Republic of Vieät-Nam on the 2nd of September 1945. In the Independence Declaration that he delivered in Ba Ñình Square to some 400,000 freedom-hungry Vietnamese and a small number of World War II American officers and other foreigners, Hoà Chí Minh deliberately used quotes from the 1776 American Declaration of Independence and the 1789 French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen.

    USING LITERATURE IN A COURSE ON THE VIETNAM WAR Jonathan Goldstein West Georgia College In sharing my experience with team-teaching a course on the Vietnam War, I hope to demonstrate that the inclusion of literary texts into the social science curriculum can strengthen both pedagogy and interest. Teachers of college courses that focus on other aspects of United States involvement in the world may fmd some of the experience applicable to their concerns.1 The Vietnam War course we taught at West Georgia College in 1984 and again in 1987 used textbooks by Stanley Karnow, Guenter Lewy, and George Herring.2 The vast body of war-related literary works in French, Vietnamese, and English was untapped as a classroom resource. While the Vietnam experience may not yet have produced a Red Badge of Courage, an All Quiet on the Western Front, a Naked and the Dead, or the multilingual masterpieces of the Spanish Civil War, it has evoked, as Joe Dunn has suggested, a volume of war literature in three languages that expands year by year? The remainder of this paper is my recommendation for a revised curriculum for our Vietnam course, using literature as a major component of the curriculum. WHY INCLUDE LITERARY WORKS IN A VIETNAM WAR COURSE? There seem to be two reasons why some of this literature should be incorporated into a Vietnam War course. The first is a general one that might apply to other history courses. Literary texts, when used as supplements to analytical histories and historical documents, can raise cultural and historical consciousness.

    CHAPTER I: VIETNAMESE PRE-COLONIAL CULTURE FROM 18th CENTURY TO 1884 Figure 1: A Female Donor, 18th Century, Buùt Thaùp Temple, photograph by Boi Tran Huynh. 8 As the introduction implies, Vieät-Nam has a long history of rivalling regimes: one thousand years of Chinese authority, one hundred years of French colonisation and from 1954, the rise of Vietnamese Socialism. Unravelling the impact of these influences is critical to understanding Vietnamese art but it is made complicated by unconvincing interpretations of the past. The post-1975 era witnessed a Socialist exaltation of the masses, accompanied by Socialist solutions to Neo-Confucian failures of the 1800s and the influence of French colonialism. In historical accounts, the pre- colonial era is interpreted as both ‘pure’ and ‘simple’ and conjures nostalgic notions of village life. While the exploitation of Vieät-Nam by the Chinese and French was intense, this Socialist account is a simplification that romanticises pre-colonial society. For instance, the extent to which Vietnamese society, during this period, not only responded to but shaped foreign or external influences are obscured. Moreover, alternative influences such as patronage of the elite, trade and immigration, have been understated. This is not to suggest that village art was insignificant but, rather, to acknowledge other influences on art during the pre-colonial era that have been overlooked in current Vietnamese interpretations of earlier regimes. This chapter questions the view that pre-colonial art is a form of ‘unaffected’ village art through an analysis of two prevailing opinions espoused by some influential Vietnamese communist art historians.1 First, that folk art in village communal houses characterised the aesthetics of pre-colonial times and second, that this was the dominant form of Vietnamese traditional art.

First, an introduction summarizes the work. Then, the first chapter introduces the figure of Nhat Linh, a founder of modern literature in Viet Nam during the colonial period, who as the nationalist revolutionary Nguyen Tuong Tam later committed suicide in dissent to the Saigon government of Ngo Dinh Diem. The second chapter introduces the broad sweep of Vietnamese history since the founding of the Nguyen dynasty in 1801, in terms of what can be seen walking the streets of Paris visiting Vietnamese bookstores. Below is the English translation of her lecture.] * * * Thirty three years ago, when I submitted – from my small town — my first ever piece of writing to the “children’s creativity contest” of the Hanoi Pioneer Youth League (Thieu nien tien phong), the world was easy to understand. I don’t recall much about what I wrote. It may very well have been a story about a lazy child, who got bad grades and made mother worry. This mother, nevertheless, wrote to father at the front that their child was well behaved and studious. By mistake, the child read the letter. Ashamed and regretful, the child vowed to improve so as to be worthy of the image presented in her mother’s letter. Every piece of this world fit together and these pieces seemed easy to assemble. The left and right sides were clearly marked, without confusion. In Quang Tri, our army and people were winning big battles. On the loud speaker, our army and people won as regularly as the sun rises. At school, a student who earned high marks was compared to a brave soldier who killed Americans and their Southern Vietnamese lackeys. A high mark in math equaled one dead American.
