TRANSCRIPT The Colour Pattern

We keep repeating the colour garter rose for a little while until we finally get to the colour pattern. Now, what’s so wonderful about mosaic stitch is that it lets you play with colour work without having to think too hard about what you’re doing. There’s no carrying around multiple strands of , there’s no intarsia, there’s no needing to twist stitches around or around at the back. Nothing like that. All you’re going to do is stitches.

Now, if you are working from the charts, you’ll see that the first couple of stitches are a colour that would indicate, like so, this will indicate what we’re working with. So in this case, we’re going to start with our main colour in section one, and then in section two, that blue will indicate contrast colour one. In your written instructions, I tell you row by row what colour you’re going to start with.

Now, all mosaic stitch is is working with one colour per row. So for example, we’re gonna start with our main colour on row one of our colour pattern, and I’m going to just work it as written with just that main colour. And you’ll see as you slip stitches from the previous row below, those colours will be brought up into that current row so that you’ll get the colour work that you see in the pictures. And it looks like this. We’re gonna do the yarn over, but we’re keeping our yarn at the back, we’re gonna slip those first two stitches in the pattern, and then we’re gonna knit one.

Now, it might feel weird because we have that yarn over at the beginning here, but just trust me. Knit the next stitch, and you’ll see that that yarn over will slide right on back there like it’s supposed to. We have one more slip and then we’re gonna knit three. Three. Slip one, knit three more. One, two, three. Slip one. One, two, three. Slip one. Knit one. Slip one. And then we’re gonna work our yarn over. Slip our stitch marker. Knit, slip the stitch marker again. Yarn over. And then we’re gonna continue in that slip stitch pattern to the end of the rope.

Here’s all of our slip stitches here. You could see that they haven’t been worked, they’re just carried up onto the needle. Now, the other second bonus about mosaic stitch is that on the wrong side rose, you kinda don’t even have to pay attention to the chart if you know how the general construction goes because what you see is what you’re going to do. So if you see your main colour here, we know we’re going to knit that stitch. If you see the slip stitch, you’re going to slip it one more time. And it looks just like that. So we know that the pattern starts with a slip one. If we get to those first two slip stitches there, just gonna bring our yarn to the front this time ‘cause we don’t want that strand crossing the front of our piece, or the right side, excuse me. And we’re going to slip those first two stitches just like that, bring the yarn back to the right side or to the back of the work. Knit. We’re back to a slip stitch here, so bring your yarn to the front. Slip. Knit, knit, knit. I see a slip stitch here, we’re gonna slip it again, and we’re just going to continue in pattern and that is all there is to mosaic slip stitch colour work.

You can see how that slip stitch carries up over two rows ‘cause we were two rows in that main colour here so it carries up. Now when we get to row three, we’re going to drop what we were just using, pick up the next colour, and we’re gonna work the next two rows in just that colour, and so when we slip those main colour stitches, in this case, the purple stitches, they’re gonna carry up over our contrast colour.

Now, if you mess up like I just did, thinking is actually quite easy in a knit row. All you’re going to do is slip your left-hand needle into that loop that is below and at the bottom of the stitch just like this, pull it over and drop the yarn that was in that old loop just like this. Now, I can fix what I just messed up here. So we had one slip, two slip, knit one, slip that one. Now I’m back in pattern.

Again, same thing on this wrong side row. We’re going to knit the colour that we just worked and slip the colours that we slipped in the last row. Here’s how we’re looking. Not too shabby. Now, you’ll notice that it looks a little like you have no idea what’s going on here. That’s normal. The magic of mosaic stitch is very similar to in that sometimes the magic doesn’t show up really, really well until you get a little further and you go until your blocking.

Now, keep your colour pattern chart and then I’ll be back to show you the border chart.
