RESEARCH SESSIONS. Our experienced researchers have been very busy with their twice-monthly sessions on family research. The Wisbech Library sessions have been very busy, it is good to see so many bringing along their laptops and learning how to access the library resources which include two subscription sites all for FREE, with our researchers on hand to guide them when needed. It is always a de- light introducing beginners to this fascinating hobby, and seeing their surprise when up pop the names of family ancestors on the researchers laptop screen. Our Wisbech Library sessions are on the first Tuesday of each month from 10 – 12 noon. Every- one welcome. If you do not have a laptop do not worry one of our researchers will use theirs to help you. Our second monthly research session is at Wyevale Garden Centre in Crowland, on the second Tuesday of the month. We are joined there by Peterborough FHS and can be found in the restaurant from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. If you can bring along some of your paperwork, if you have any, we can then start you off or help your progress with you research. MAIN MEETINGS. Everyone found our October speaker Robert PARKER very interesting, his talk kept us all enthralled. We hope to invite him back again in the future. Our November meeting was more of a social event, it being the last meeting of the year. Food and drink accompanied the quiz. The competition brought much amusement as we tried to identify and match the baby photographs to present mem- bers attending the evening. Two members told of how they broke through the ‘Brick Wall’ of their family research. Others offered help and advice to those still facing their Brick Wall. We do not hold a main meeting in December. Our research ses- sions still go ahead as planned on the first and second Tuesday of December and again in January. We start 2016 with our meeting in St Peter’s Church Hall Wisbech from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. with a talk by Susanah FARMER the theme of her talk will be ‘Going back to Basics. Everyone welcome. Our February talk will be on researching Military Sources. In March we have a talk and demonstration on displaying your family his- tory in many various ways, including Scapbooks. Our PROMOTION STAND with great displays to match the events will be in Wal- pole St Peter’s church on Saturday November 28th for their Advent Festival. Also with another special display in St Augustine Church Wisbech on Saturday 5th De- cember for their Christmas Tree Festival. Watch out for our very special Family History Tree in Peckover House Wisbech in their Christmas Tree event on the first and second weekend of December. You will also find us with a display and offering help with family research on Saturday 12th December at the Craft Fair in the RAFA club in Lynn Road Wisbech. Please do call in and meet us at any of these events.

Message from your Borough Councillor A great deal has happened since my last update in the Crier. At the end of September, I was invited by the Leader of the Borough Council, Councillor Nick Daub- ney to join the Borough Council's Cabinet taking re- sponsibility for Development. This role was previously performed by Mrs Vivienne Spikings who is a hard act to follow as she has been an exceptional holder of this portfolio. Vivienne will continue as chair of the Planning Committee. I explained in the last addition the role of the Cabinet and its part in the de- mocratic process. This has meant I have been very busy understanding my new role and the Development Portfolio. The areas I am responsible for vary from the Local Development Frame- work to Derelict Buildings to Street Naming. But a major part of the portfolio is concerned with the processing of planning applications and building controls and enforcement. I would now like to try to explain why the Walpoles like every other Ward in the Borough have received a considerable increase in planning applications in the last few weeks. In November 2012 at a planning appeal hearing, the Inspector concluded that the Borough had a five year supply of housing land (in fact said 7.5 year supply) but at a similar planning appeal in January 2015 another Inspector decided that the Borough only had 1.9 years supply of housing land. The Council lodged an appeal against this decision but the decision was upheld. The implication of the lack of a five year land supply, is that planning applica- tions that would not normally be approved may be approved. All applications will still go through the normal planning processes and must be sustainable. But if they are refused and subsequently go to appeal, they could be granted because of a lack of five year land supply. This situation will not change until the Local Development Framework has passed its examination by the in- spector and any amendments agreed by the Borough Council. The LDF Ex- amination Inspector will have completed receiving evidence by the time this addition of the Crier has been published. The Borough Council's Cemetery at Walpole St Andrew continues to make good progress. The new benches supplied by the Walpole Parish Council have been installed and the cemetery is looking much better. Finally I would like to congratulate all involved in the Crier (especially the distributors) on this the 100 addition. WELL DONE!! I appreciate all the local support and if you think I can help do not hesitate to contact me. Cllr Richard Blunt. Telephone: 01945 780454 Email: [email protected] 6

WALPOLE SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB

Following on from our last update, a small group of us met up informally one evening for drinks and a catch up at the Walpole Water Gardens.

More people than expected turned up and we had a very relaxed and enjoyable evening.

With the bar being open Wednesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m., it seems like a good place to meet up again in the future.

Watch this space for further news on plans and developments.

Mariela’s Turkey Recipe NB: You will need a cooking syringe for this recipe. Cheap ones – from under £2.00 – can be obtained from Amazon etc. Use a turkey of at least five kilos - smaller will result in it being very dry. 1) Rub the turkey inside and out with lime or lemon juice 2) Season inside with garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika and a little cumin (optional). 3) If not preparing a stuffing, include a little sage and rosemary inside, as well as some chopped Bramley apple and red onion mix. 4) If using a stuffing, fill the turkey and place a Bramley apple in the mouth of the opening to keep the stuffing safely inside. 5) Season the outside with salt, black pepper, paprika and a little (optional) cumin. 6) Inject generously in the flesh of the turkey either cognac, grappa or pisco ( any good grape spirit) Use a large whisky glass full. 7) Preheat the oven to 240. Put the turkey in the roasting dish, rub the flesh with either a large knob of butter or 3 tablespoons of olive oil, then add juice of one large orange around the base of the turkey in the tin and carefully cover the breast with rashers of streaky bacon. 9) Put in the oven for fifteen minutes to brown the turkey. 10) Take the turkey out, cover loosely with foil and turn the oven down to 180 medium and return the turkey to the oven to cook for thirty minutes per kilo. 11) Baste every half hour to forty minutes with juices that the turkey has pro- duced, add some more fresh orange juice if necessary. Test the turkey thighs after 2 ½ hours, to see how much more cooking is required. More than that will result in the breast being very dry. Make sure though that the juices run clear when testing the thigh. As a general rule, the maximum cooking time for a 5 kilo turkey is three hours at most. 12) Remove the turkey and let it cool for about ten minutes before carving (prepare the gravy).

Please let me know if you have any views or ideas about these recipes . Any com- ments and, yes, even critical ones, are very welcome. Thanks, Liz de Boer

HELP NEEDED…….

Please can you help. School was recently lent this photograph which shows the opening of the original Walpole St Andrews primary school – sometime in the late Victorian period we think. We would love to hear from anyone who can give us any more information – for example a date when the school was opened, the name of the teacher in the photo, and maybe the names of some of the children.

Many thanks

News from Anthony Curton School

We Will Remember Them We were delighted when members of the local community joined us at the War Memorial at Walpole St Peter’s Church, to observe the two minute si- lence on November 11th. The two hundred children, thirty staff, and volun- teers from school wore handmade felt poppies, made for us by the staff and children of our After School Club. The poppies were sold to members of the school community for 50p each, and raised £110 for the Royal British Legion. During our short service, children from Year Six- our oldest children- read favourite War Poems and lead prayers of Remembrance written by themselves. Year 6 pupil Henry Ward read the Exhortation and the wreath of remembrance, made by Mrs Yvonne Gant and Mrs Sue Allen, was laid by 10 year old Charlotte Large and 5 year old Isabella-May Hartopp. Staff member Mr Wilkinson read a moving piece written by the Dali Lama, asking us all to think about living in Peace, and the Last Post was played by staff member Mr White. We were so proud of the respectful and dignified way the children responded to the occasion. Two days later, on Friday November 13th, we were delighted to welcome Sharon Smith - the Gaywood District Women’s Standard Bearer for the Royal British Legion- to our school assembly to talk to the children about her role within the Legion. Sharon was accompanied by the Vice Chairman of the King’s Lynn British Legion, Mr John Green and his wife Val, a committee member for the Legion, who accepted the cheque for £110 from Charlotte Large and Bella Booth. News from the Walpole Gardeners Club.

At our October meeting we enjoyed a very interesting talk entitled ‘Goats’ which was given by Judith Hall. Judith together with her husband rear goats, producing meat and also milk and associated products. At the end of her talk she had bought with her a goat’s meat casserole and also some milk for us to have a taste.

The November meeting was a talk by David Mason entitled ‘Wild Breck- land. David is a wildlife photographer and his wife Jill is an author of wildlife books. We enjoyed a very interesting talk plus some magnificent slides including birds, animals and nature scenes of Breckland throughout the changing seasons. Some of the animal and bird photographs would have needed extreme patience and skill to achieve.

Don’t forget the AGM and Christmas Party on 10th December. Ann Scott will be giving a Floral Christmas Demonstration. Next year’s programme will be available giving members a chance to discuss the venue for our Annual Outing, plus any variations to our 2016 Flower and Produce Show. Look forward to seeing you all.

Notes from Walpole St. Peter’s Church ARE YOU READY FOR ADVENT?  Advent is a countdown. We see shopping centres, television advertisements and supermarkets reminding us how many shopping days until Christmas. Children count down until the great day of ‘presents’ dawns. We as Christians prepare for Christmas by counting down the weeks until we celebrate the birth of Christ with Advent calendars and Advent candles.  As the season of Advent approaches, let us be reminded of the sense of wait- ing that the season brings. It is considered a season of preparation for the annual commemoration of Christ’s birth. This rich and multi-layered season is also designed to prepare the Christian for the glorious possibilities of the second coming. It is a season of joyful expectation.  The advent season begins with the preparation cry of John the Baptist “Make straight the way of the Lord”. John the Baptist goes ahead of the Lord to get everything ready for him. It is truly a time of preparation and expectation in anticipation of the Lord.  Advent is such a beautiful season. It is a time for renewal; it is especially a time for forgiveness because God brings forgiveness to us in the shape of His Son. Over the next few weeks we will travel once again the road that leads to Bethlehem. We will follow the cautious young couple along their arduous journey and remember their disappointment over being kept out of the inn. We will once more enter the stable, smell the odours and watch the manger being prepared. And along with the people of the village, the shepherds of the field, the angels, and the magi, we will focus our eyes of adoration upon the child in the crib and the star in the sky.  During this season we are meant to be startled, to be awakened to almost infi- nite possibilities, and claim our souls and lives for the work of recreation, restoration and deep transformation.  Advent is something that is ‘arriving soon’. When we have something com- ing, when we expect an event, an advent, we are usually alert inside. We need to be listening and watching. Are you?  And when it finally comes, A Very Happy Christmas to you all! With all these additional stalls and shows at the Festival next year, we are urgently looking for volunteers to help before, during and after the festival - all kinds of sup- port is needed! Talking Centipede Adult’s crossword—answers in the February edition. A man walks into a pet shop and says to the owner. "Ok I want to buy a pet, but I don't want a boring normal pet, no cats, or dogs or budgies I want something differ- ent." The pet shop owner informs him that he has a talking centipede. "Really?" Says the man "How much?" The owner informs him that the talking centipede is £50. Happy with the unusual offering the man pays the money and takes his new pet home.

On getting home he lays the match box with the centipede in it on the table, opens it and says "Hello Mr Centipede, fancy going to the pub for a few drinks?" The centipede says nothing. Figuring it must be tired from the journey he decides to leave it for an hour and try again later. An hour later he opens the match box and says "Hello Mr Centipede, fancy going to the pub for a few drinks?" The centipede again says nothing. Starting to get suspi- cious the man decides he will give it one more hour, and if the centipede doesn't talk he will take it back to the shop for a refund.

An hour later the man opens the match box and says "Hello Mr Centipede, fancy going to the pub for a few drinks?" The centipede says "I heard you the first time! I'm putting my shoes on!"
