Hello friends, it’s Sam cracking open another report for Geek Girl Riot. Here’s something you should know about me right away: I love Scrubs. The TV show, obviously, not the article of clothing. It’s one of my very favorite shows and I’m constantly re-watching it. And if I’m not re-watching it, I’m probably making references to it that go over most people’s heads because no one else I know is a really big fan, apart from my fellow Geek Girl Rioter Alex aka Vanilla Bear who lives too far away to join in. I was devastated when it ended six years ago, but luckily I discovered a show that replaces the hole in my (sacred) heart—Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Brooklyn Nine-Nine started in 2013 and the fourth season started last month. We're currently four episodes in, and it's proving to be just as funny as the previous seasons. The premise is pretty simple: it follows the antics of a bunch of detectives in Brooklyn, so, of course, there’s a lot of crime-solving going on, whether it’s a string of robberies, or a suspicious murder, or a crime boss who may or may not be after a member of the squad. But I’ll get to that in a minute. Like any good TV show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine makes you care about the characters, and I’d argue that they’re more important than the plot itself. Let’s take a look at some of the squad members.

Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise.

Annual Report ‘17 Real. Diverse.Real. Diverse. Unique yet universal, these diverse productions draw us in and bring us together. Canada encompasses six time zones and nearly 10 million square kilometres. Our landscapes range from rolling prairies to rugged mountains, silos to skyscrapers. We speak more than 200 different mother tongues, from the languages of the country’s Indigenous peoples to our newest immigrants. Young, old, LGBTQ, straight, able-bodied, disabled — together we make up the country we call home. The Rogers Group of Funds is proud to help tell the stories that connect us. This year, we provided $26.8 million for 106 truly diverse productions that just scrape the surface of what it means to be Canadian. In doing so, we’re ensuring that the grandmothers in Pangnirtung, the transgender kids in Regina, the second-generation Asian-Canadians in Vancouver and so many others can see a piece of their reality — Canadian reality — reflected on screen. We’re also expanding the horizons of viewers across the country, introducing new ideas and different perspectives. Above all, we’re supporting great television and film — productions that draw us in regardless of where they’re set, what the actors look like or what language they speak. Because the best stories are universal, bringing us together in a shared experience that speaks to everyone. Robin C. Mirsky, Executive Director, Rogers Group of Funds & Philip B. Lind, Vice Chairman, Rogers Communications 1 Television is a powerful tool that can either break down or build up language and culture. Producing our show in Inuktitut isn’t easy, but we’d lose something really important if we didn’t.” ‘‘ Stacey Aglok MacDonald, Producer, Qanurli? High above the treeline, this series brings a uniquely Inuit sense of humour to the comedy genre.
