D. maculatus beetles were obtained from naturally infested smoked fish, cultured at ambient temperature for the establishment of new stock and same age adults. Purchased N. sativa seeds were ground into fine powder, weighed at 0.4 g, 0.8 g, 1.2 g, 1.6 g and 2.0 g for use in the bioassay. -

Dermestes (Dermestes) difficilis sp. n. from Bolivia is described, illustrated and compared with Dermestes (Dermestes) subaenescens Pic, 1943. INTRODUCTION The genus Dermestes Linnaeus, 1758 contains 84 species and subspecies worldwide (Háva 2003*). Háva & Kalík (2005) recently revised the species of the „Dermestes peruvianus species group“, known from the Neotropical region, with compiling a list of all known species; from Neotropical region, 14 species were recently known. The two species discussed here belong to the „Dermestes bicolor species group“, as defined by Kalík & Ohbayashi (1982). The species group contains 10 species distributed in Holarctic, Neotropical, Oriental and Afrotropical regions, from Neotropical region only two presented species. MATERIAL AND METHODS Specimens of the species described here are provided with a red printed label with text as follows: „HOLOTYPE, sex symbol, Dermestes (Dermestes) difficilis sp. n. Jiří Háva det. 2006” Locality data of studied material are given as on the original labels. Data on separate labels are indicated by slashes ( \ ). The following measurements were made: total length (TL) - linear distance from anterior margin of pronotum to apex of elytra. elytral width (EW) - maximum linear transverse distance. Different life stages of D. haemorrhoidalis were gathered from the cadaver, and the signs of activity of these beetles (i.e. frass) were observed. On the basis of these facts, we concluded that the decedent, whose remains were discovered in the flat on 13 December 2018, died no later than the summer of 2018, with a strong probability that death occurred even earlier (2016 or 2017). A case history, autopsy findings, and entomological observations are provided. The presence of larvae of Dermestidae in the empty puparia of flies is reported for the first time. A list of the invertebrate species found in the corpse is provided, compared with available data, and briefly discussed. Keywords Decomposition . Forensic entomology . Dermestes . A human corpse at an advanced stage of decomposition was found in a house in the residential area of Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia. Entomological specimens were collected during the post-mortem and the live specimens were subsequently reared at room temperature. The time of death was estimated to have been 14 days previous to the discovery of the body based on the police investigation. Both adult and larvae of the beetle Dermestes ater (De Geer) were found to be infesting the corpse and from the stage of decomposition of the body and the estimated time of death it would appear that infestation may have begun at a relatively early stage of decomposition. However, there are many other families of Diptera and Coleoptera that were found associated with animal carcasses, which have not been reported in Malaysia. In this paper, we report dipterans from the family Micropezidae: Mimegralla albimana Doleschall, 1856, Neriidae: Telostylinus lineolatus (Wiedemann 1830); Sepsidae: Allosepsis indica (Wiedemann 1824), Ulidiidae: Physiphora sp. and a beetle (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae: Sphaeridium sp.) as opportunist species feeding on oozing fluid during the decomposition process. They did not oviposit on the pig carcasses, therefore, their role in estimation of time of death is of little importance. However, they could provide clues such as locality and types of habitats of the crime scene. It is well documented that Dipterans are attracted by the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by a corpse during the first minutes following death. Coleopterans are known to be attracted by highly decomposed cadavers, but have received less attention regarding the olfaction-based mechanisms underlying these interactions. In the present study, we impregnated gauzes with VOCs collected from each decomposition stage of dead rats: fresh, bloated, active, and advanced decay. We collected the VOCs released by the gauze and confirmed what was previously know from the literature: the decomposition stages are associated with contrasting chemical profiles. We exposed Dermestes frischii Kugelann (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) male and female antennae to the same gauzes and found that stronger electrical responses were recorded when using the smell of the advanced decay stage. Finally, we performed two choices behavioral assays. Females showed no preference for the four decomposition stages, while males were attracted by the smell associated with active and advanced decay stages. -
