Glen had many directorships and a number of unfinished projects. His assistant Directors stepped into some of his busiest and most popular Colleges. Other Colleges and projects were closed, either temporarily for work next year, or permanently, if the graduate numbers indicated that the students were not taking them anymore. A couple of his projects were picked up by willing faculty and are expected to be completed sometime in 2019. We have brought in new members to train as Directors, and are conducting audits to evaluate the Curriculum. These audits look at the numbers of graduates for each College and School, and whether or not some Colleges are still relevant to our membership. We have identified a number of projects for next year, including a more futuristic or analytical approach to some of our real-life topics. My hope is that we can create fewer name-and-date type Colleges in Military Studies and explore the socioeconomic factors leading to war, and the technologies and medical applications of military innovations. In Medicine, I hope we can create Colleges covering innovations in treatments and in limb and organ replacement, and keep these Colleges up to date. In Science, we need Colleges that keep up with the newest discoveries in the fossil records, the latest theories of our origins, the newest discoveries in space, and the future of the human race. These are just a few of the ideas I’m discussing with the rest of the command team, which includes our Staff and Deans. STARFLEET’s roots are Star Trek, and Star Trek ideals shall always be the heart of Academy. We need to look to the future, and not remain mired in the past. We must write for the new generations entering STARFLEET, so that Academy remains relevant to the Members This is our First Duty. Admiral Carol Thompson Vice Commandant (Acting Commandant) STARFLEET Academy 3 All-greatquotes.com COMMANDANT GLEN DIEBOLD DIEBOLD - Glendon L. Of Cheektowaga, NY. September 26, 2018. Beloved husband of Nila R. (Wilbanks) Diebold; dearest father of Lisa M. (late Daniel D.) Phillips, Kelley E., and Tabitha A. Diebold; grandfather of Glen "Scotty" and Sara M. Diebold; son of the late Donald H. and Estelle I. (Hufford) Diebold; brother-in-law of Wayne (Pam) Wilbanks; also survived by nieces and nephews. No prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Temple Baptist Church, 333 Cleveland Dr., Buffalo, NY, Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 10 AM. Mr. Diebold was a retired Corrections Officer of 31 years at the Erie County Sheriff's Department and a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of the Vietnam era. Arrangements by: ERIE COUNTY CREMATION SERVICE, (716) 824-6435, 873 Abbott Rd., Buffalo, NY 14220. Please share your condolences at: www.ERIECOUNTYCREMATIONSERVICE.com 4 IN MEMORIAM Admiral Glen Diebold Born: October 24,1949. End of Watch: September 26, 2018 Glen was many things to many people: A Husband, Father, Grandfather, Marine, POW, Corrections officer, STARFLEET officer, Academy Director, Ghost Writer, Dean, Vice Commandant, and Commandant. And he was My Friend. Besides service to our country, and STARFLEET, he was involved in church and charity in his community, most recently, Meals on Wheels. He joined STARFLEET in 2001, and soon after, he contacted me for a position in Academy. He was especially interested in my own College of Survival Studies, but it was a year or two later, that I was ready to pass on my first College to him. He tested out, took it over in 2003, and ran with it. He expanded the 4-course College into one of 95 courses, that covers survival in many situations. We worked together to support the needs of other STARFLEET departments, such as the Chaplains and SpecOps (Now MACO) by helping to develop an SO training manual and courses to support their activities. Over the 15 years he was with us, he created 3,157 Courses, directed 100 Colleges, and created 4 Institutes. He had active projects on the table at the time he was called to his Next Mission, and was actively working on those until he became ill and was hospitalized on September 2. I had the privilege of working with him on most of his projects over the years, and we discovered that we shared the same ideas, often joking about being “joined at the hip” or “in each other’s minds”. Glen was an inspiration to many Members, as evidenced from the many emails of condolences coming in from the Fleet. His real-life Military and First Responder Colleges consistently had the most graduates across Academy. I teased him about having his own “Fan Club”, seeing that many of the same Members were taking all his courses. :-) Glen left his legacy in Academy, and he will be missed, but not soon forgotten. The Academy has renamed the 4,400 Boothby Award to the Glen Diebold Boothby Award, in his honor. Semper Fi, My Friend! Admiral Carol Thompson Vice Commandant, SFA Quora.com Boldly Go……. 5 AROUND THE ACADEMY….OUR CONDO- LENCES *Glen has been my friend, my brother, for over 40 yrs. I remember the first time we met, it was at the midnight shift at the “Old Place”. He was assigned as my helper in the Pen Hospital. We became friends from the first handshake. I’d call him a Jarhead and he’d call me a Doggie and we called each other Brother. I miss you Glen. Save me a spot of the firing line. (Tom Pawelczak) *I am totally at a loss for words. I know that I am not alone in this as I am readin the emails from everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. (Jared Fielder) *Oh my God. I'm devastated. (Kelli Caplette) *We have lost one of the hardest working member of the Academy. I know this because I had work with to Beta test many courses. I will miss him great. He was a friend and I am praying for him and his family in this time of hardship. (Richard Hewitt) *Terrible news prayers to his family and friends. (Darlene Harper) *Glen was the person who encouraged me to become the Director and take over his College of Physics and Thermodynamics courses and then I took on the College of Orbital Mechanics. With a background in physics and astronomy, and working for NASA, I provided him with several updates to the College of Physics exams which he appreciated. I was lucky to meet him at one of the Starfleet ICs a few years ago. He will be missed. (Nancy Hall) *Sad news indeed (Russell Bedford) *Hi, all.....I'm very sad to hear that Glen died. I think I met him at Memphis and I'm glad I did. (Jamie Delantonas) *Truly a great loss. Glen was an inspiration to all at the Academy and in Starfleet. Condolences to all his family and friends. (Gregory Staylor) *This is devastating news. My sincerest condolences to his family. We have lost a great inspiration and a great asset to the Academy. As they would say in Vulcan—”Nam-tor ek’etek nelauk k’tevakh hi vesht tvidonik k’ha’kiv’t’osa-veh.” (We are all diminished by his death, but were enriched by his life. (Denis Rush) *The Staff of the Andorian Orientation College and College of Fire, Rescue and Safety - Basic Dim our lights today and stand ready to assist in any way that we can. Region 12 Staff also stands ready to assist where needed. (S. Christopher Boggs) *My deepest condolences to his family. He will be missed. I never got to meet him personally, but did converse with him on the phone multiple times. (Franklin Newman III) *Indeed this is a very sad thing for Starfleet and Starfleet Academy. It saddens me to know that we have lost a long time member and a great person my condolences to Glenn family and friends. Although I considered him a friend even though if I never really met him. To the academy staff my condolences go out to you all of you. Carol Jill and Robin if there is anything that I can do please let me know. Again my condolences to the family and friends that Glen leaves behind, just to let you know he will always be on my mind and in my heart. (James Reed) *My condolences to Glen’s family. He will be missed very much, his hard work and presence were very much a part of SFA. (Jayden Tyronian) *I am so sad to hear this. Glen was a great mentor who helped me get my colleges up and going. Region 11 dims its lights for his final voyage. (Eileen Reed) * This is so very sad for the family, for the Academy, and for STARFLEET. I've known Glen for at least 12 years.

  • Data's First Christmas
DATA'S FIRST CHRISTMAS RON STEIN DATA'S FIRST CHRISTMAS "Geordie, can you explain the concept of "Christmas Spirit" to me?" Geordie LaForge looked up from his snack, and smiled at the innocent, quizzical look on the face of his android friend Data. "Here we go again!" he thought. The two of them were sitting in their favorite booth in Ten-Forward, the crew lounge of the Federation Starship Enterprise. The two met like this just after their watch ended nearly every day. Geordie would grab a quick snack, and then they'd spend time chatting with friends, or just people watching. Ten-Forward was an ideal spot for this, with its near constant hum of activity. It was the cultural heart of the ship. For Geordie, people watching served the same purpose that it had for young men since time began. For Data, it was an education. "Why do you ask, Data? I mean, what brought this up?" "It is something I have noticed in the past, and I am observing it again here on board the Enterprise: as the Christmas anniversary approaches, beings of many races and faiths become kinder toward one another, and they seem happier. This is called "The Christmas Spirit". I do not understand." Geordie wondered briefly how an android managed to look perplexed, then asked "Data, how much do you know about Christmas?" Knowing Data's proclivity for detail, he quickly added "Just a summary, please. I've already read the Bible." "Of course, I too have read the Bible, as well as many other works associated with Christianity and the legend of Christ.

  • Beyond the Final Frontier: Star Trek, the Borg and the Post-Colonial
Beyond the Final Frontier: Star Trek, the Borg and the Post-colonial Lynette Russell and Nathan Wolski Over the last three decades, Star Trek has become, to use Bernardi's term, a "mega-text" (1998: 11). Star Trek's mega-text consists of much more than the various studio-produced television series and films - it also includes (among other things) novels, Internet chat groups, conventions and fanzines. That Star Trek's premise of space exploration is a thinly disguised metaphor for colonialism has been extensively analysed (see Bernardi, 1998; Hastie, 1996; Ono 1996; Richards, 1997). Boyd describes the utopian future presented in Star Trek the Next Generation (STNG) as based on "nineteenth-century essentialist definitions of human nature, building ... on faith in perfection, progress, social evolution, and free will" (1996: 96-97). Exploration, colonisation and assimilation are never far from the surface of the STNG text. Less apparent, however, are aspects of the series which challenge the hegemonic view of this narrative and which present a post-colonial critique. In this paper we will explore a range of post-colonial moments and an emerging self reflexivity in the second generation series, focusing on those episodes of Star Trek: the Next Generation (STNG) and Star Trek: Voyager which feature an alien race known as the Borg. Others in space Much has been written about the role of the alien in science fiction as a means of exploring issues of otherness. As Wolmark notes: "Science fiction provides a rich source of metaphors for the depiction of otherness and the 'alien' is one of the most familiar: it enables difference to be constructed in terms of binary oppositions which reinforce relations of domination and subordination" (1994: 2).
