LETTER FROM THE VICAR Hello, I am delighted we have progressed along the Covid recovery roadmap and are now able to socialise outside in groups of six. Going home after the church service without talking to each other has felt very unnatural and it’s lovely this has come to an end. In other signs of recovery, our choir is ready to start rehearsing together shortly and there was some outside hymn singing for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, something we hope to do again at Pentecost (23rd May). Looking at the Public Health Covid map I see our area is coloured white which means it is considered that Covid is suppressed in this area. I hope, through maintaining current safety measures, we can embrace the freedoms offered and stay on track for our next stage of recovery, with increased indoor social activity from May 17th. This would, of course, open the door to a return to ‘Covid Safe Café Platt’ which is eagerly awaited by so many. Preparations for starting our Health Walks once more are also under way. This month sees two significant events for our church. Firstly, a visit from Bishop James, as he approaches retirement. He will be able to preside at our Confirmation Service on 9th May. Secondly, our annual general meeting is on 23rd May. This is a meeting in two parts. In the first part any adult who lives in the parish or is on the church electoral roll can vote for a churchwarden. In the second part, those who are on the church electoral roll can vote for Parochial Church Council members. However, for wider interest, everyone is welcome to take a look at our Annual Report to see how 2020 went. This will be available online or as a paper copy; our meeting will be a mix of ‘in person’ and ‘by Zoom’ attendance. Standing for the PCC is something I would encourage for anyone who is at a stage in their faith where they receive communion. It is good for people new to church life as they bring fresh perspectives; it is good for people who have worshipped for many years as they bring a long-term appreciation of our work. The minimum age for PCC members is 16. If you are interested in standing for the PCC do have a word with me, our churchwardens or an existing PCC member. There is a little nomination paperwork to submit ahead of the meeting but we would be happy to help with this. God Bless, Lorraine, Revd Dr Lorraine Turner, Vicar, 882477

CHURCH NOTES Public worship on Sundays at 10.30 will be held in the church as well as continuing our Zoom service for those who feel it is best to remain at home. To Zoom, please use: https://zoom.us/j/2749958875 the password is ‘worship’. Thank you for following our Covid-19 safety guidelines with such seriousness. If you are wanting to come to the service, please book if possible to help our planning. It is important to remember that we have not yet reached a point in the government's road map where we can socialise indoors before or after worship. So please go straight to your seats when you arrive and wait for guidance at the end of the service so we can keep the exit clear. We are now able to socialize outdoors in groups of two households or 6 people, if you take advantage of this please stay as part of a particular group of 6 without moving around other groups. Also consider carefully your own level of risk and those around you and remember to maintain a separation of at least 1m from other households. Our Zoom services continue alongside recordings available online especially for those who are shielding and feel it is not yet the right time to return to worship in the church building. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following is a reminder of the requirements for attending Sunday services: 1. Please book a seat to avoid disappointment. Seating will be by household (including anyone in a support bubble with you). Please could one person from your household/bubble phone Jan Martin (up to Saturday morning) on 01732 884 417 to reserve seats. If you need to leave a message, please remember to include your name, contact number and the number of seats required. Up to 6 people from the same household/bubble can be seated together. 2. When you arrive at church please look for the number of your row as you enter at the South Door. If a queue develops please respect the 2m distancing. A churchwarden will stand by to assist if necessary. Please go straight to your row without talking to others. 3. Face coverings are compulsory except for all those people who have a reason for exemption, and anyone delivering the 'up front' parts of the service. 4. Please use sanitiser as you enter the church building. The church sanitiser is available throughout the service though you may wish to bring your own. 5. Your order of service and news sheet will be on your seat; only a small choir will be able to sing. 7. At the end of the service please remain seated until the churchwarden indicates your exit is clear, then leave promptly.

(Continued on page 7)

(Continued from page 6) 8. The plate for a retiring collection will be by the West Door. 9. Toilets – please use the accessible toilet. In an emergency the ladies’ will still be open but check no one is already in there. 10. We cannot yet offer Explorers and therefore we can only welcome children into the main service to sit as part of a household group. Children are welcome to bring their own pens and our children’s sheet will be available. 11. NHS Test and Trace: we can only pass on your contact information as part of Test and Trace if you have given your permission. Forms will be available for anyone who would like to do this. There will be a box to post these in on your way out of church. Each form lasts for 3 weeks before we need to destroy the information. Additionally, as part of the Test and Trace system, there are NHS Covid-19 QR codes which may be scanned if you have the app on your phone. Revd Lorraine Turner, Vicar, 01732 882447

FROM THE EDITOR Over the Easter weekend the wonderful sound of excited children’s voices could be heard around Platt woods, as the school PTA Easter Bunny hunt took place. Luckily, the chocolate bunnies themselves were not hidden in the woods, but the letters, that were the clues, were. In the church the prizes, the large blue foil wrapped bunnies, were waiting for those who completed the course. The signs of Easter were all around – including the floral arrangements in the church, for which many thanks to those who did the decorations which included the usual display of lilies in memory of loved ones. Many people have added glass stones to the Easter garden; it will remain in the church for a while as the season of Easter lasts for 50 days, until Pentecost. Outdoors, bright days with clear blue skies and spring flowers all around raise our spirits, even if there is a cold wind coming from the north-east. As more and more people receive their 1st and 2nd COVID jabs and we head towards May 17th and Step 3 of the government’s COVID restrictions, some activities at the Memorial Hall will begin again. Most of us have longed for the resumption of activities which have been missed for so long. Café Platt will be open again on 19th May, with advance booking and the former restrictions still in place. (see page 19). The Health Walks will be relaunched on 10th May, see page 24. What a joy it is to see the diary on page 19 growing a little longer month by month. Another positive sign in the village is the new school building, growing by the day. Thank you to Scott Wishart for keeping us up to date with its progress with his drone photos, also for his ‘Running out of Lockdown’ article. Maybe it will inspire some people to take up running and even join the local contingent of Parkrunners, when, once again, Saturday mornings may become their highlight of the week. It is such a relief to see England’s COVID statistics fall week upon week. I’m sure that we all feel enormous gratitude to the scientists whose endeavours and commitment enabled such a rapid production of the vaccine. In most places the roll out has been highly efficient and hopefully we may move to Step 4 on 21st June. On that date the government hopes to be able to remove all legal limits on social contact. Speaking of enormous gratitude, this is an opportunity to remember HRH Prince Philip and give thanks for the life he led of service, courage and unstinting dedication as the ‘liege man of life and limb’ to HM The Queen. We were considering whether to have a picture of him on the cover or a picture of the new school building as planned. As he was such a champion of the young, a picture of the school seemed more appropriate, with Prince Philip’s picture on one of our colour pages (page i). PLATT CHURCH’S MISSION GIVING FOR APRIL, MAY AND JUNE Each quarter the church council adopts two charities to support. For this quarter the church will be supporting The Leprosy Mission and VaccinAid. The disabilities caused by leprosy are catastrophic for those who get it and for their families; yet it is a preventable and treatable disease and the drugs required are not expensive. Churches Together in Sevenoaks, of which Platt Church is part, is partnering with The Leprosy Mission to build, equip and staff a Community Hub in Mozambique. The website tells us that ‘…every 2 minutes someone is diagnosed with leprosy for the first time, but it doesn't have to be this way. Leprosy is curable, but fear and ignorance about the disease mean that people do not always come forward to receive the cure. Leprosy affects the nerves, causing people to lose the ability to feel pain. Without the gift of pain those with leprosy can injure themselves and sadly develop permanent disabilities. The Leprosy Mission works to end leprosy and to transform the lives of people like Zaina in Mozambique. When people in Zaina’s village recognised that she had leprosy, they banished her to the forest. Together with her three-year-old son, Zaina became homeless. When villagers came to take her boy back to the village, she was heartbroken. Without food or medicine, Zaina’s body became increasingly weak. She hit rock bottom. But at this point of despair, a kind stranger found Zaina in the forest. He built her a hut to shelter from the rain and took her to a health post where her leprosy was cured. Leprosy Changemakers, trained by The Leprosy Mission, were able to go to her village and teach her neighbours about leprosy; that it is easily cured and does not need to be feared. Wonderfully, Zaina was able to return to her village and she was reunited with her son. She has trained as a Leprosy Changemaker herself, so that others don't face discrimination like she did. She is able to recognise the early signs of leprosy and she has made it her mission to encourage others to do the same. Leprosy need not exist today. It only exists because of a lack of medical care, fear and ignorance. Churches Together in Sevenoaks is partnering with Leprosy Changemakers in Mozambique to bring lasting transformation to people like Zaina by building a Community Hub. A Community Hub is a safe space where every villager is welcomed unconditionally. A place where those who can’t read or write can learn about leprosy through drama, song and dance. A place where health

(Continued from page 9) workers and Leprosy Changemakers can be trained to recognise early symptoms of leprosy and provide treatment. A place from which lasting change and God’s blessing can flow out to rural communities. We are partnering with people like Zaina to work towards the end of leprosy- related disability and discrimination’. So far Churches Together in Sevenoaks has raised £1, 570.00. Donations made to The Leprosy Mission made before April 24th will be doubled by the government. Recently the group produced a service in support of providing a Hub of Hope to Leprosy suffers in Mozambique... the service can be watched here: https://youtu.be/mqzQrnHsvcY The giving link to support this vital and effective work is here: https:// amplify.e-activist.com/17481/leprosymission/108378/churches-together- sevenoaks--district-leprosy-mission-appeal The second charity which we will be supporting is VaccinAid. This is a partnership including the Church of England and UNICEF; the link for this is: https://www.vaccinaid.org/ UNICEF plans to deliver 2 billion vaccines around the world by the end of this year. The efficient roll out of vaccines in this country means that we are beginning to win the fight against COVID–19. Donations can be made as individuals to this fund out of thankfulness for our own jabs. So far £785,300 has been raised. We will only be safe, if we are all safe. Jane Sankey

The puppies A client brought a litter of Golden Retriever puppies to the local veterinary clinic for inoculations and worming. As the look-alike pups tumbled over and under one another in their box, the experienced vet realised it would be difficult to tell which had been treated and which hadn’t. So, the vet turned on the water tap, wet her fingers and gently moistened each dog’s head as she finished giving it the necessary shots. After the fourth puppy, the vet noticed her hitherto talkative client had grown silent and was looking rather reverent. As the animal doctor sprinkled the last pup’s head, the owner leaned forward and whispered, “Thank you so much. I hadn’t realised you baptised them too.”

PRAYER DIARY Holy Spirit, hover over the chaos and make new this world. – Rest on us and change us, – give us peace that we may share it gladly. – forgive our sins that we made forgive others gently. – send us out that we may care for the weak graciously. Tony Burnham

During May we pray to God… …and give thanks for the success of the vaccination against COVID-19, for the scientists who produced it, and the efficient rollout of the programme. …and give thanks that the fight against the disease is gradually being won, and for the front-line staff still caring for patients. We remember in prayer the countries where the disease continues to rampage through communities. …giving thanks that some restrictions are lifting, and we have the joy of meeting family and friends after so long apart, and enjoying some freedoms. …for those who have lost loved ones during the pandemic, and were not able to mourn their loss as they would have chosen. …and give thanks for those who give of their time, energy and skills to serve their communities and local groups voluntarily. …for all who live with financial or employment worries, and those waiting for medical diagnoses and procedures. …for all who are displaced due to conflicts and ethnic cleansing, all refugees and those who lack shelter, food and medical care. …for those detained against their wills for political reasons or by modern slavery, and we pray for those who live in fear for their lives or safety. …for the leaders of the nations, scientists, and all who bear the weight of responsibility and decision making. …for those who suffer loneliness and those who are becoming less mobile. …for those who are unwell and becoming more fragile in body and mind, and we give thanks for the devotion of their carers, that they may have enough respite and rest to continue their tasks. …giving thanks as longer, warmer days and new growth promise the coming of summer. May the Spirit who set the church on fire upon the day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ. from Michael Perham

Nomination forms for churchwardens and for PCC membership will be available in the church porch from the week beginning 9th May. Those for the churchwardens need to be completed and submitted to the Vicar before the start of the Vestry meeting. Those for new PCC members should, preferably, be completed before the APCM. LIGHT UP THE TOWER There are many people who live in the village, some within sight of the church tower for whom it is a landmark of significance, often as a memorial to loved ones particularly when floodlit. If you would like to take the opportunity to light up the church tower at some time to mark an anniversary, a celebration or in memory of a loved one, you could do so for £30 a night. This could also include a dedication in Village News. Please contact Sylvia Woodward, 883914, or Jane Sankey, 883212.

All in the Month of May, it was 70 years ago, on 3rd May 1951 that the Festival of Britain and the Royal Festival Hall in London were opened. The aim of the Festival was to lift the nation’s spirits by celebrating British industry, arts and science. Also 70 years ago, on 9th May 1951 that the Lake District National Park was established. It was Britain’s second national park. Also 70 years ago, on 25th May 1951 that the British spies Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean fled to Moscow. They were members of the infamous Cambridge spy ring, and their whereabouts remained unknown until 1956.

ST MARY’S PLATT AND DISTRICT SOCIETY You may have read recently that we are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. If you’re not a member, never been a member, nor visitor, you may be wondering what the Platt Society is and what it does. St Mary’s Platt and District Society was formed just over 50 years ago. Its prime functions are as a social group concerned with community and planning matters which are in the interest of the village. Currently there are approximately 50 members, including a committee of chair, treasurer, secretary and 6 members who organise speakers, outings and events. The committee also discusses local planning applications and sends representations to TMBC when necessary. It has recently written in objection to the proposed additional 3,000 homes of Borough Green Garden City. However, it was also in favour of the new memorial hall and primary school. In the community, some members help with the annual village litter pick, maintaining the Memorial Hall garden, have contributed towards other village societies and have donated the living Christmas tree and a bench at the hall. The Society meets on the fourth Tuesday in October, November, January, February and March from 7.15 to 9.00 pm in the committee room of the Memorial Hall. At four out of the five meetings talks are often given by local speakers but we do cover many diverse topics from blood runners to wildlife rescue and Great Comp Gardens to New Zealand! Our November meeting is a pre-Christmas Beetle Drive with drinks and festive nibbles. The outing normally takes place in May or June and we usually have a coach trip to a local large garden and house, an interesting town or a river trip. The tea party is a very popular event in a member’s garden in June or July. We have a delicious homemade cream tea and cakes. There is a membership fee of £5.00 per person paid annually at the October AGM and meeting fees of £1.50, or you can give us a try and visit at a cost of £2.50 per meeting. Membership gives priority to the tea party and outing. Above all we are a social and sociable group, interested in our community and beyond. We are hoping that all our members will be able to return when it’s safe and legal to do so and we would love to welcome new members. Hopefully, if you did not know what we do, you have a better idea now and would like to come and join us. I have noticed that there have been many people moving into the village (Continued on page 15)

(Continued from page 14) recently and this would be a great opportunity to find out about your new neighbourhood and meet the neighbours. We are also happy to welcome visitors including residents of surrounding villages. Hope to see you all soon. Linda Aldcroft, Honorary Secretary, 885467, [email protected]

BOROUGH GREEN LIBRARY The library is now open for browsing. Please wear a mask, be prepared to log in to the NHS contact tracing app and use hand sanitiser. A visitor who has been to the library several times in recent days felt that it was a very COVID secure environment. She commented that it is quiet there at the moment because there are no coffee mornings or other groups. Friendly staff are on hand to assist. Opening times are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10 am to 4 pm with a lunch closure from 1 pm to 2 pm. Saturday 10 pm to 2 pm. These times may change as things begin to open up. Please use your local library. It would be so sad to see it close through lack of use.

100 years of the British Legion One hundred years ago, on 15th May 1921, the British Legion was founded in the aftermath of the First World War, to provide support to veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependants. It was created at a time when two million people were unemployed. More than six million had served in the war: of those who came back, 1.75 million had suffered some kind of disability, and half of those were disabled permanently. Four organisations came together at the instigation of Lancastrian Lance Bombardier Tom Lister, who was angered at the Government’s unwillingness to help, and Field Marshal Earl Haig, who had been Commander in Chief of the British Forces. The Legion campaigned for fair treatment of those who given everything for their country, and it continues this work today. In 1922, the Legion’s poppy factory opened in the Old Kent Road, London, with 40 disabled men manufacturing 1000 poppies a week. The first Poppy Day was held that same year. The Festival of Remembrance began in 1927, and the Legion became ‘Royal’ in 1971 – 50 years ago – on its golden anniversary. At first membership of the Legion was confined to ex-Service personnel, but it was expanded to include serving members of the Forces in 1981. Courtesy of Parish Pump

FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR This month I write this column for the last time in this electoral cycle. The Kent County Council and Police and Crime Commissioner elections are being held on 6th May 2021. The circumstances of this election are the most peculiar in all my local government experience. As a result of the restrictions brought in to control the Covid-19 pandemic, almost no ‘normal’ election campaigning has been possible and there have also been unforeseen interruptions to all County Councillor candidate election preparations. For this reason, I tabulate below the formal details of candidates standing, as many residents with whom I have been in contact have not been aware of the extent of the elections, or received details of the candidates standing locally. For the KCC elections the Malling West Electoral Division Candidates are: Kathleen Maria Garlick, resident of , Labour Party Helen Hobhouse, resident of , Liberal Democrat Richard Paul Mountford, resident of & Malling, Green Party Harry Rayner, resident of Wrotham, The Conservative Party Candidate The Malling West Electoral Division includes the civil parishes of Borough Green, Hildenborough, Ightham, , St Mary’s Platt, Stansted and Fairseat, and Wrotham. In most recent General Elections, the turnout in the Constituency has been about 72-77% of the electorate. For most local government elections electoral turnout is around 33-36% of the electorate. As I write this, I am reminded that universal suffrage is a relatively recent phenomenon. In the lifetime of my mother many women were unable to vote, as they were disenfranchised. Our forefathers fought for the right to vote and I encourage you to do so. Many more electors will have chosen to vote by post or by proxy at the forthcoming elections and again I encourage you to do so, by whatever means is available to you. When I first entered representative local government, now more than 35 years ago, more than half of the money spent by local councils came from some form of central government grant or allocation. These days, in excess of 70% of the KCC budget is raised from Council Tax. I encourage you to vote to ensure that as many electors as possible vote for the candidate of their choice, because they are being elected to represent you. Their decisions are spending your Council Tax. Have your say. As I mentioned in opening, there will be more than one ballot paper on 6th May. The Police and Crime Commissioner elections, which were postponed from last year as a result of the pandemic, are being held contemporaneously with KCC elections. ART IN JUNE OPEN STUDIOS That time of year has come around when, despite a rotten year in 2020, one or two artists are popping their head above the parapet to open their studios again. Fingers crossed!!! Although there are 50 artists to visit as part of the ART IN JUNE event this year, only one is in the Platt area: Rose Bridgland Colbridge, who would like to welcome all friends, neighbours and others interested in art to her studio which will be open on 5th, 6th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 20th June, from 11am – 5pm Open Studios is just right for the naturally curious person who loves to look at art and inquire. The beauty of visiting an art studio is that the artist will be on hand to welcome you, answer your questions and share a cup of tea! The South East Open Studios event is running concurrently with ART IN JUNE so a good day out visiting several studios can be enjoyed. In the next few weeks you will see both ART IN JUNE and South East Open Studios posters popping up all over the area. Catalogues are free and distributed to local cafes, businesses, libraries, etc. or directly from Rose at The Paint Shop, 1a Marion Cottages, Maidstone Road, Wrotham Heath. You can view the catalogue online by visiting Art in June2021:simplebooklet.com or email [email protected]

What did I do with the car? As I left a meeting at our church, I could not find my car keys. They were not in my pockets. They were not in the church. Then I thought – I’ve left them in the car! As I burst through the doors of the church, my heart sank: the church car park was empty. With a heavy heart I called the police, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the really difficult call, and told my wife that the car had been stolen. There was a little gasp. “You did not have the car. I dropped you off. Remember?” My heart sang as relief flooded through me. “Of course! Thank God! Well, come get me quick – I am already running late… what is keeping you?” My wife replied with ominous calm: “What’s keeping me? I’ll tell you what’s keeping me. The police are here. They think I’ve stolen the car…”

BOROUGH GREEN MEDICAL PRACTICE UPDATE Since Easter the second shot programme has continued on schedule, patients having their second vaccination 11 weeks after their first. The GP practices continue to invite patients for second vaccinations on this schedule. Those vaccinated up to the end of January are receiving their second doses. All those in care homes should have received theirs by mid- April. Given the latest news about the AZ vaccine, there has been a little resistance to second dose Covid vaccinations at GP surgeries but these local clinics continue with a good supply of vaccine. The Primary Care Network is not expecting, nor is it scheduled, to use the Moderna vaccine. The mass vaccination centres continue to run on reduced capacity due to availability of vaccine. The Angel Centre remains closed until the 26th April. There is a stable rollout of the vaccine locally. John Potts – Chair: Patients Participation Group

PLATT STITCHERS Hello again to all Stitchers and readers of this magazine, I hope you are OK and well on the way to having all your jabs against this awful pandemic. Unless regulations change, I plan to resume our meetings again on Wednesday May 26th, socially distancing and weather permitting in my garden, at the usual time from 10am to 12 noon. The government’s current plans to remove all restrictions on June 21st mean that we will be able to meet up fully and indoors if required on Wednesday June 23rd as per usual. More details will appear in the June edition of Village News. Best wishes to you all and keep safe. Ann Braithwaite, 887212, [email protected]

PLATT WOODS VOLUNTEER GROUP The next volunteer day will be on Saturday 8th May from 09.30 to about noon. Please bring your own refreshments and tools, e.g. loppers, saws, secateurs and gloves. Meet at the Platt Common entrance to the woods and carry out work to keep them as a wonderful local amenity. For further information contact David Palmer of the Woods Management Committee on 07554 798982.

VILLAGE JOTTINGS Borough Green Food Bank The Church of the Good Shepherd is locked at present. Food bank donations may be left in the porch of Borough Green Vicarage (24 Maidstone Road). All usual non-perishable items are most welcome. Newspapers for Viking Oak Kennels, Seven Mile Lane Please ring Linda and Derek on 01732 884474 and they will arrange to collect the newspapers from your house at a safe distance. Please do not send colour supplements or newspapers with staples in them. Alternatively, you can take them to the kennels yourself but you may have to unload them and put them in the shed yourself. This shed is immediately on your left as you come to the end of the entrance drive. The kennels also appreciate donations of old bedding and towels. A Mystery – Have you seen…? There is a red-framed wheelchair in the church which is available for anyone to borrow BUT it is missing one footrest. This has been missing for many months and despite being attached to a long red pole, about 18 inches long, it cannot be found. Obviously, without it, the chair is useless. Has anyone got it or seen it? Please contact Lucilla Mackay on 882045 or Jane Sankey on 883212. Ightham Mote The gardens, estate and car park at Ightham Mote are open. Advance booking is in place to keep everybody safe and maintain social distancing. To avoid disappointment, please book in advance, especially at busier times such as weekends, school holidays and bank holidays. However, where space is available on weekdays, pre-booking may not always be necessary. Please book your tickets by 3.00pm the day before your visit. Members can book free, while non-members will need to pay when booking. Tickets are released every Friday.

HEALTH WALK RETURNS St Mary’s Health Walk is ready to restart after a yearlong break. If you would like a good walk and good company, we will be leaving at 10am from St Mary’s Church steps each week from Monday 10th May onwards. Returning walkers and new walkers are welcome. Our walks are usually from 60 to 90 minutes in duration with a mixture of woodland, footpaths and some short stretches along the road. Revd Lorraine Turner

RUNNING OUT OF LOCKDOWN – THE ROAD TO LONDON After a relatively quiet February that was broken in two by a week of snow, running through March and April has, so far, been an absolute delight. The country lanes around Platt have never looked so beautiful, and longer days have allowed for some glorious evening runs. Socially speaking, the relaxation of restrictions at the end of March enabling us to exercise outdoors within a group of six was a big moment, and the chance again to run with friends not seen since last autumn. At the time of writing, and all being well with the Government's roadmap, parkrun (www.parkrun.org.uk) in England is due to start re-opening from the 5th of June. I know we are all crossing everything possible that this might happen. As mentioned in my last article, Saturday mornings had become a significant part of so many lives. The thought that we might be able to come together again as a community is an exciting prospect. Six months now lie ahead of me before the London Marathon, and my thoughts are now turning towards doing some more structured training. There is time and, if the virus continues to recede, also an opportunity to slot in a few other races before the big day. People sometimes ask about the best way to start running and whether the nine-week 'Couch to 5k' course is any good? I can recommend this, and after putting my three teens through the program last summer, I can testify that it does work – albeit with a bit of graft. As the local area isn't known for being terribly flat, we trained in Stonehouse Field for the first six weeks and then ventured further afield as the children gained confidence. After several months of inactivity cooped up in the house home-learning, it was just the ticket to get them moving again, and by the end, I think they surprised themselves at how far they could run without stopping. If you prefer running with others who are also just starting out, there are several groups locally with Beginners to Runners (www.beginners2runners.co.uk) always having a good showing at the local parkruns. Ask on the community Facebook pages, and I'm sure you'll find yourself pointed in the right direction. Stay safe and keep active, Scott Wishart, April 2021 My Virgin Money Giving page is: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ scottwishart. Thank you in advance for any support you can give.

PLATT MEMORIAL HALL GARDEN By the time the magazine goes to print we will have had our first working party of 2021. And, party is the very word to describe it; it will be so good to meet the regulars for a couple of hours gardening and some chatting too. I am so looking forward to seeing everyone again, and I hope that there will be some new faces too. We are always grateful for anyone to come and join the monthly working parties; everyone will receive a very warm welcome. The character of the garden is altering; we are no longer backed by a field of brambles and nettles. At present it is hard to say quite how this change will affect our memorial garden but I am sure that the presence of the school will produce a certain liveliness and vibrancy that was not there before. I hope, too, that the schoolchildren will have the opportunity to enjoy our garden and to watch the changes that occur naturally with the seasons. And I hope there will be the chance and time for the children to take an active part in the garden. Previously the Beavers built a cairn of stone and rock collected from all over the garden. The Brownies have a small semi- circle of garden that they planted up and I hope they can continue to maintain it. Gardens are an ever-changing picture; nothing is set in stone and, as time moves on, so does the garden. We adapt to whatever changes occur. This year ours will need some planting alongside the new retaining wall, but that won't happen just yet. Meanwhile we have lots of work to get on with and lots of plants and flowers to enjoy. If you should fancy joining us on Saturday 15th May, my contact details are: [email protected] and my mobile is 07759 629176. Jane Jewitt

TONBRIDGE & MALLING RAMBLERS Our friendly group is one of 13 Ramblers groups in Kent and part of the national Ramblers walking organisation. We offer a variety of group walks, mostly on Sunday mornings with additional mid-week rambles each month. Our walks are usually circular and about 5-6 miles in length. We explore the beautiful Kent countryside from different starting points within the Tonbridge and Malling area and, occasionally, further afield. New members are welcome, as are those wishing to try us out before joining Ramblers. To find out how you can join one of our upcoming walks, please email [email protected] or take a look at our website: http://www.tonbridgeandmallingramblers.org.uk Looking after our footpaths We try to ensure that public footpaths within Tonbridge & Malling are readily accessible to all walkers. We have, in each parish, footpath observers who report issues such as broken stiles and gates; broken or missing footpath signs; fallen trees and other obstructions. If you are out walking and encounter a problem, please do raise an alert. You can do this by logging the fault on the Kent Country Council website (search for ‘KCC public rights of way’) or by emailing details (with photo and path number/location) to [email protected] Nicola Brown, Tonbridge & Malling Ramblers, 07709 334 871

MEMORIAL HALL NEWS May 17th sees our hall re-opening after being closed for almost 6 months due to Covid-19. Under the government road map we can open for the return of Fitness & Exercise as was the case back in September /October last year. We hope this will be followed by a full return on June21st. During this period all Covid 19 rules and requirements will apply whilst using the hall, meaning the kitchen will remain closed. Many of you will have seen the work carried out to the north boundary where we lost most of our garden, and will have noticed the re-instated landscaping sloped towards the new retaining wall. We were not happy with this so spoke with KCC regarding this matter and they have since agreed with us that this was unacceptable and have agreed to raise the retaining wall so that our garden/grassed area will be level, as it was before the work started. April 17th saw the return of some volunteer gardening work taking place under the Covid 19 rules which allow 6 people to meet outside. We will be meeting again on Saturday 15th May from 9.30am for an hour or two. Please let Jane Jewitt know if you wish to attend so we can control numbers: 07759 629176 or [email protected] By the time you return to using the hall we hope to have started our office/store extension, so please be aware of the building materials and work taking place on your return. Please check out our website www.plattmemorialhall.org or our Facebook page for all the latest information. David Vallance, Chair of Trustees, 883422

MEMORIAL HALL BOOKINGS The hall will partly re-open on 17th May and be fully open from 21st June subject to government data allowing it. FROM YOUR MP Nearly eight years ago, one of my very first visits as a politician was to visit flooded homes in Tonbridge and Hildenborough. They had been devastated by the flooding at Christmas 2013 and into the New Year of 2014. Since then I’ve been determined to do all I can to help ensure all our communities are as resilient as possible to the threat which our rivers and streams pose. Even here, around Platt, we face the prospect of flooding, both from the A25 and also from the River Bourne as it comes from Plaxtol towards Borough Green, with the Busty Stream in Ightham also having burst its banks before. However, the biggest scheme which will help everyone is the enlargement of the Leigh Flood Storage Area. Not only does this protect thousands of homes in Tonbridge, but it also ensures a reduction in water coming downstream from Leigh, allowing all tributaries such as the River Bourne and Hilden Brook to flow more quickly into the Medway. At the time of writing I am preparing to speak at the public inquiry into the enlargement of the Leigh Flood Storage Area. This is an essential scheme and one that I will be supporting. However, we must make sure there are no adverse consequences for those living further upstream. I’m concerned that the Environment Agency’s modelling causes further issues for Hildenborough, Leigh and Penshurst in particular. I’ll be asking the Inspector to make sure the expansion goes ahead with suitable mitigation measures to address these concerns. We urgently need the enlargement of the Flood Storage Area to protect our communities better. We’ve waited nearly 8 years for this moment. I’m keen this is accepted as part of the proposals, but that all upstream issues are resolved too. It is a once in a generation opportunity to defend ourselves best from flooding which all too often has had a devastating impact on the community.
