Lesson 3: Clothes Lesson 3: Clothes Get ready to learn a LOT of vocabulary for clothes! You probably already know some of these words – but we’re going to go beyond the basics, so I’m sure you’ll learn a number of new words as well. Let’s start with the various parts of a shirt. Some shirts have a collar around your neck, and buttons in the front. The parts of the shirt that cover your arms are called the sleeves. You can have a long-sleeved shirt, a short-sleeved shirt, or a sleeveless shirt: Complete this sentence now: “I’m wearing a _______________________________ shirt.” (long-sleeved / short-sleeved / sleeveless) © Shayna Oliveira 2014 - EspressoEnglish.net We have specific words for different types of shirts. A T-shirt is usually used for sports and everyday life, and a more formal shirt can be called a dress shirt (for men) or a blouse (for women). When it’s hot, you can wear a tank top. dress shirt blouse tank top To cover your legs, you can wear pants or shorts. Many pairs of pants have pockets, and some have a zipper or fly. You can use a belt to hold your pants in place. pants shorts a pocket © Shayna Oliveira 2014 - EspressoEnglish.net zipper belt For more formal situations, women can wear a skirt or a dress – and men can wear a suit and a tie. Complete this sentence now: I’m wearing ___________________________________. pants / shorts / a skirt / a dress / a suit Intimate clothing is called underwear. Here are some different types of underwear. Men can use boxers or briefs. Women use a bra and panties. © Shayna Oliveira 2014 - EspressoEnglish.net The clothes you wear for sleeping can be pajamas or, for women, a nightgown. When you wake up and take a shower, you can put on a bathrobe. pajamas nightgown bathrobe What you wear on your feet are shoes. The word “shoes” refers to the general category, but there are some special types – sneakers for sports, high heels for women, sandals for the beach or summer, and boots for rain or snow. And don’t forget socks! © Shayna Oliveira 2014 - EspressoEnglish.net sneakers high heels sandals boots socks Complete this sentence now: I’m wearing _______________________________. shoes / sneakers / socks / high heels / sandals / boots In the first picture, the shoelaces are untied. In the second picture, the shoelaces are tied. The shoelaces are untied. The shoelaces are tied. © Shayna Oliveira 2014 - EspressoEnglish.net Finally, let’s look at summer and winter clothing. To keep warm in cold weather, you can wear a thick shirt called a sweater, and a jacket or coat to go outside. Your jacket might have a hood to cover your head. If it’s very cold, you can use a hat, scarf, and gloves. sweater gloves In the summer, if you want to go swimming, wear a swimsuit or bathing suit. This is the general word – there are some more specific types. A men’s © Shayna Oliveira 2014 - EspressoEnglish.net swimsuit is called swimming trunks. And women can wear a one-piece swimsuit or a bikini. swimming trunks one-piece bikini Verbs Used with Clothing We use the phrasal verbs put on and take off for actions with specific items of clothing: • She puts on her jacket when she goes out. • She takes off her jacket when she gets home. Use the verb wear to describe the current status of someone’s clothing: • He’s wearing jeans. • She wore a blue dress to the party yesterday. • I’m going to wear my new boots tomorrow. Use the expression get dressed to talk about putting on your clothes in general. In the morning, after you wake up, you get dressed. The opposite is get undressed – this refers to the general action of removing your clothes. There’s also the expression dress up – that means to wear nicer clothes than normal, like for a special occasion. You dress up to go to a wedding or banquet. © Shayna Oliveira 2014 - EspressoEnglish.net After you wear your clothes, you need to wash them. The process of washing your clothes is called doing laundry – you can use a washing machine and a dryer. A washing machine Now that your clothes are clean, you need to fold them – and sometimes iron them as well to remove the wrinkles (lines that form in fabric). folded clothes iron You’ve finished Lesson 3! Inside you will find information regarding: • The District-wide discipline management plan, • A description of prohibited misconduct, • The disciplinary options, methods, and consequences for preventing and addressing student misconduct, and • The process the District will follow when administering disciplinary consequences. If there is a conflict between the Student Code of Conduct and the Student Handbook, the terms of the Student Code of Conduct will control. If there is a conflict between the Student Code of Conduct and District policy, the more recently adopted provision will control. The Student Code of Conduct (SCOC) is enforced from the time the student enters a school bus or steps on the school campus or when a student attends any school-sponsored or school-related activities. In addition, pursuant to State law, the SCOC includes disciplinary consequences for certain conduct and behaviors that occur off-campus and not at any school-sponsored or school-related activities. Students may be subject to campus, classroom, or organization rules in addition to those found in the Student Code of Conduct. Depending on the nature of the misconduct, students may face consequences under these additional rules as well as possible disciplinary action under the Student Code of Conduct. • Women in Pants: a Study of Female College Students Adoption Of
WOMEN IN PANTS: A STUDY OF FEMALE COLLEGE STUDENTS ADOPTION OF BIFURCATED GARMENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA FROM 1960 TO 1974 by CANDICE NICHOLE LURKER SAULS Under the direction of Patricia Hunt-Hurst ABSTRACT This research presented new information regarding the adoption of bifurcated garments by female students at the University of Georgia from1960 to 1974. The primary objectives were to examine photographs of female students at the University of Georgia in The Pandora yearbooks as well as to review written references alluding to university female dress codes as well as regulations and guidelines. The photographs revealed that prior to 1968 women at UGA wore bifurcated garments for private activities taking place in dorms or at sorority houses away from UGA property. The study also showed an increase in frequency from 1968 to 1974 due to the abolishment of the dress code regulations. In reference to the specific bifurcated garments worn by female students, the findings indicated the dominance of long pants. This study offers a sample of the changes in women’s dress during the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s, which then showed more specifically how college women dressed in their daily lives across America. • Policy Code: 4316 Student Dress Code
Policy Code: 4316 Student Dress Code The board agrees that student dress and personal appearance greatly impact academic performance and social interaction with other students. Therefore, the board requests that parents outfit their students in attire and personal appearance that is conducive to learning and appropriate social conduct. The board prohibits any appearance or clothing that: • Violates the guidelines in this policy as a reasonable dress code adopted and publicized by the district and school; • Is reasonably likely to create a substantial and material disruption to the educational process or to the operation of the school; • Depicts profanity, vulgarity, obscenity, or violence; or • Creates a threat to the health or safety of the student or others. All students must observe the following guidelines: 1. • Hiking Clothes and Gear
Hiking Clothes and Gear Hiking boots The right hiking boots determine whether you enjoy the hike, so invest the money and time for great fit and comfort. Weight: Go as light as you can, but not at the expense of support and good tread. Ankle high vs. low-cut: The trend is low-cut hiking shoes, rather than boots. However, we strongly endorse ankle-high boots for firm support on uneven terrain. Fit: Try them on with the hiking socks/liners/orthotics you plan to wear. o When boots are unlaced, you should have room to squeeze a finger between your heel and the back of the boot, if you kick your toes toward the front. o When boots are laced, there should be little or no heel slippage. o Walk up and down stairs (or the store boot ramp) to test for slippage, flexibility, and to ensure toes don’t bump into the end of the toe box. o Kick the toe box against an obstacle; your toes should feel no impact. o Boots conform to your feet, but don’t buy boots that are tight or uncomfortable. o Most boots come in medium width; if you have wide feet, check out men’s boots. Break-in: The rule of thumb: Put 50 miles on boots before their first trip to break them in, adjust sock thickness, and toughen up/protect your foot’s pressure points. Cost: Expect to pay $150+. If you find boots you love, check out SierraTradingPost.com for deals. Waterproof: Good boots will be waterproof.

  • Dress Code 2021-2022
2021-2022 DRESS CODE Dress for the occasion: We gather to do important work. Our dress reflects the importance St. Michael’s places on learning and personal conduct by communicating a level of care and respect for ourselves, others, and the work we do together. 1) All clothing worn at school should be neat, clean, without holes/cuts/frays/excessive wear/offensive-inappropriate language/symbols, and worn as designed (e.g., not inside out). 2) All shirts should have sleeves. Boys’ shirts should have collars. a) 2021-22 Update: The one modification is that our third through eighth grade students will no longer be required to tuck in straight-hemmed golf/collared shirts. If students are wearing a sweater or sweatshirt, they must tuck in the shirt underneath. 3) Shoes should be worn and secured at all times. 4) Athletic clothing may be required for physical education classes, but not permitted otherwise -- with two exceptions. a) St. Michael’s athletic outerwear may be worn indoors in cold weather b) Interscholastic team uniforms may be worn on game days. 5) Hats, hooded garments (except St. Michael’s items, see 4a) and sunglasses may only be worn outside, and sleepwear never worn. a) Parent reminder: students will continue to go outdoors and use our 70-acres for learning and daily activities, so they should wear the right clothing, weather gear, and sturdy shoes daily. Balance is key. We respect the mind, body, and spirit of all people (including ourselves) and seek to keep in balance these aspects as well as the interests of individual expression and a communal need to focus on learning.
