An announcement from the College Board Chair Introducing Peggy Mahy – Tranby College Principal commencing January 2021

An experienced Principal, Peggy has most recently led The Scots School , a co-educational, K-12, boarding school on the and Victorian border. Like Tranby College, Scots is a Uniting Church in school.

Principal of The for six and a half years, Peggy has recently concluded her role to allow her opportunity to support her daughter, who is completing Year 12 at Scots. Her husband, Andy, and their daughter Lucy, are looking forward to making the move to Perth to live, study and become part of our school community.

While at The Scots School, Peggy led a significant transformation of the School’s educational offering, introducing a contemporary pedagogical model, with a focus on personalising learning and developing ‘world ready’ citizens. At the same time, she ensured that the School’s long history of achieving strong academic results continued, with enviable outcomes achieved for year groups, and individual students, who were mentored to achieve their potential. Additionally, Peggy oversaw the launch, implementation and successful establishment of the International Baccalaureate, the Primary Years Programme in the Junior School and the implementation of innovative STEAM learning in the Senior School.

Some of the public accolades for her school leadership include The Scots School Albury being a finalist in multiple categories at the Australian Education awards, 2018, 2019 and 2020 for ‘Best Regional School’, and 2019 and 2020 for ‘Best Australian Boarding School’.

Through her passion for the arts, community service, sport and education beyond the classroom, the co-curricular experience of Scots was uplifted with a highlight being The Scots School Albury School Pipe Band performing on the world stage at the Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh in 2017. Her leadership of her school through the challenges of a decade of drought, recent bushfires and engaging in nuanced decision-making to support the transition to remote learning, earned her respect among both the school community and region.

Peggy’s extensive career encompasses three states and several leading schools. Prior to her Principalship at Scots, she was Deputy Principal, Learning and Teaching as Canberra’s Radford College, a large co-educational Anglican school renowned for its academic outcomes. She came to that role with experience gained in the university sector in and as a leader in teaching and learning at St Catherine’s School, a prestigious girls’ boarding school in Melbourne.

Page 1 A teacher of English and History, Peggy’s personal interests include the performing and visual arts, sport of any kind (but especially AFL) and enjoying the natural world. A non-Executive Director of the national not for profit organisation, The Outdoor Education Group, Peggy has for many years been a passionate advocate for experiential programmes and service experiences to enhance confidence and mental wellbeing in young people.

A lover of beach life and culture, Peggy and her family are thrilled to be coming to , and to Tranby where she sees a strong alignment with Scots and her values and recognises Tranby as a wonderful place for her to share passion for education and leadership.

A school leader for whom relationships with students is paramount, Peggy revels in being able to shape education that ensures children thrive and flourish. For her, watching the evolution of a child and being able to have a personal and visible role in that journey is all important. Peggy is very keen to meet all students, parents and staff as soon as possible and hopes to be able to cross the Nullarbor as soon as border restrictions allow.

Kind regards

Dr Susan Roberts College Board Chair
