Franklin High School Senior IB English Summer Reading 2018-2019

PART ONE:

1. Read The Metamorphosis and Other Stories by Franz Kafka (Dover Thrift Edition, $3, free copies available in textbook room).

2. Write a 500 to 1,000 word essay that…

 Focuses on two of the stories (one must be “The Metamorphosis”; you choose the other).  Focuses on at least two of the literary terms on the back of this sheet (All Genres/). Choose wisely, as some terms do not apply to this book.  Is centered on a clear and analytical thesis statement.  Has an introduction, body, and conclusion.

PART TWO:

1. Read Oedipus the King by Sophocles (Bernard Knox translation, $6, free copies available in textbook room).

2. Write a 500 to 1,000 word essay that…

 Focuses on at least two of the literary terms on the back of this sheet (All Genres/Drama). Choose wisely, as some terms do not apply to this .  Is centered on a clear and analytical thesis statement.  Has an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Both essays are due on the first day of the 2019-2020 school year (8/1/19).

If you do not have computer access over the summer, you may handwrite the essays; then, you will type them after the school year begins.

Typed essays should be in Times New Roman font style, 12-point font size, with one- inch margins. All headings and citations should be in MLA style.

Do not use any secondary sources. Use only the book and your brain. You are smarter than the internet. All essays will be submitted to a plagiarism checker after the school year begins.
