Based on virtual and visual research conducted on social media, qualitative interviews and lyrical analysis, this case study explores the concept of vernacular cosmopolitanism and Canadian hip hop in relationship to Punjabi-Sikh identities, articulated and performed by artists Humble the Poet and Sikh Knowledge. This case study addresses a lacuna of scholarship available on Punjabi-Sikh identity and hip hop by providing an analysis of album Turban Sex and book/album campaign for UnLEARN: Butterflies and Lions. I will explore how both artists respectively affirm and destabilize identity politics of popular representations of Punjabi-Sikh ethnicity and heritage. (Image by Kauldher) ............................. 83 vii INTRODUCTION: SIKH BEATS & THE LIMITS OF MULTICULTURALISM Is cosmopolitan a quality of individuals? In its aesthetic connotation, the word cosmopolitan evokes a certain kind of familiar cultural image or person. (Werbner 48) I should clarify immediately, however, that I do not presume a singular Sikh subject, nor claim to speak about all Sikhs or a Sikh ‘community’ at large. Rather, I am concerned with the formation of two Sikh subjects. (Axel 413) This is a story about a friendship, and a series of virtual coincidences that brought two individuals together. This is also a story about identities. Identities that are immersed in and inspired by hip hop culture. More specifically, this is story about the desire to connect. Toronto artist, Humble the Poet (Kanwer Singh), and Montreal-based artist/producer, Sikh Knowledge (Kanwar Anit Singh Saini) have been erupting across social media, and digitizing in cyber space on multiple social media platforms through a purposed “need to connect” since 2010. The research I have conducted in this study is a glimpse into the lives of Humble the Poet and Sikh Knowledge, and how they respectively and collectively affirm and destabilize identity politics, particularly popular representations of Punjabi-Sikh identities and culture. I aim to ethnographically situate them through their social media movements, a study of their performances, a review and analysis of their music and lyrics, and through conversations that I have been privileged to have with them. The framework of vernacular cosmopolitanism explored throughout this ethnography serves the purpose of interpreting the artists beyond the lens of multiculturalism and antiracism that limit ethnic and cultural identities. There is no singular concept of cosmopolitanism, for its re-emergence and debate in the academy in recent years is best approached and interpreted in the 1 plural sense, indicating that there are many ways to be cosmopolitan.

    Bollyville, U.S.A: The Commodification of the Other and MTV’s Construction of the “Ideal Type” Desi Murali Balaji When the Music Television Network launched MTV Desi in 2005, it promised to bridge the divide between South Asian Americans and their counterparts in the Indian subcontinent.1 This study looks at how MTV Desi tried to create an “ideal type” South Asian American through its programming, presenting an image of South Asian Americans as loving “Bhangra but also Shakira… MTV but also Bollywood.” The author seeks to articulate the political economy of identity by describing MTV’s attempts to define and commodify “Desi-ness.” The author also attempts to explain why MTV Desi ultimately failed and how marginalized audiences can resist commodification by rejecting corporate- defined identity. n its 25-plus years of existence, the Music Television Network has been one of the primary forces in shaping global youth culture and cultivating youth identity.2 The Viacom-owned network’s influence has been so expansive that MTV programs are now a staple of youth consumption in every corner of the Iworld. 3 MTV, in many ways, is popular culture, indulging its viewers with the lav- ishness of consumerism and breeding a loyal following among an age group that varies from impressionable pre-teens to middle-age voyeurs. MTV in the United States has traditionally targeted white, suburban teenagers, and as its content para- digm has shifted away from music videos and into new “reality”-based program- ming, the network has expanded its reach into movies and even books. In many ways, the network has evolved into an “all-encompassing ‘lifestyle’ channel for its young targeted audience.”4 MTV’s success in shaping culture has been so prevalent that the network itself is synonymous with cool.

Das Racist, “Shut Up, Man” Desi hip-hop occupies a changeable and very unique space in American hip-hop. It is not a cohesive movement, nor a genre with definable characteristics. It might instead be best described as a network of numerous self-constructed and self-conscious political actors. The discourse on South Asian American hip-hop has grown in the last decade, increasing the visibility of this large artistic and political milieu. In particular, the work of Nitasha Sharma1 and Sunaina Maira,2 along with a recent collection of essays published in the book Desi Rap3 take significant steps towards exploring Desi hip- hop as a musical phenomenon in which racial identities are expressed, stereotypes are subverted, and aesthetics rooted in Black nationalism are appropriated – along with the complex ways in which these issues intersect. These works carry out the significant labor of making visible the ways in which Desi hip-hop engages with notions of cultural Othering, and how artists assume political identities both through their lyrics and through the weaving of traditional music samples into the fabric of hip-hop rhythms. In this article, I will similarly explore the work of Desi hip-hop artists and the political identities manifest in their music, but I aim to go further by demonstrating that race consciousness is not solely explicit in artists’ lyrics, but implicit and equally important in the way Desi artists take up space in hip-hop and command representation.

Through interviews, participant observation, and an analysis of their lyrics, th is paper examines how South Asian American (desi ) hip hop artists develop a racial consciousness and identities that both challenge narrow identity politics strictly drawn around ethnic lines and provide alternative ways of “being desi in America” by creat ing interracial alliances and racialized identities based on a politics of identification. By identifying as both South Asians and as people of color, the young adults in this study simultaneously articulate ethnic and racialized second-generation identit ies in ways that challenge assimilation theories that predict the downward assimilation of immigrants who adopt Black culture. Professor, Music Vocal, GGS Khalsa College for Women Jhar Sahib Ludhiana Against modern Indian music there has been an accusation by a certain select group - that modern Indian music is not Indian at all. Additionally some would be reluctant to concede that it is even music. About this second opinion I withhold any discussion. But as to the comment that modern Indian music is not Indian - that is an intriguing point of view which in my opinion deserves to be discussed. The reason being that this charge has been made by a select and quite influential group of music lovers. This group is of the firm opinion that: a) Modern Indian music does not follow any of the raag note patterns of Indian music, b) This music has none of the characteristics of being typically Indian – in other words Indian folk-music. c) For accompaniment with this music, it is all too easy to use foreign 'orchestral' music. We need to keep in mind especially that the above accusation has been made primarily around Indian Film music. It is through Film music that Modern Indian music finds its most popular expression. Among the above mentioned group of critics is a section which has cultivated the strong viewpoint that the mixing of Indian music and western music and the joint use of these different styles of music is not possible. A similar view is held even by Aakaashbaani (All India Radio), in whose light classical music department (not denoted as modern music) the harmonium is considered to be an 'untouchable' instrument.

    Pakistani Immigrants by Kathleen M. Moore Introduction The experience of Pakistani Americans has been shaped by the convergence of two immigration trends, the first Asian and the second from the Muslim world. The ear- liest arrivals to the United States were Punjabi men in the 1890s, and immigration from the area that now constitutes Pakistan lasted until the U.S. Congress placed severe restrictions on all Asian immigration through the 1917 „barred Asiatic zone‰ law and the 1924 Johnson-Reed immigration act. Though they were mostly Sikhs, they were often classified in official records as Asian Indian or, alternatively, Pun- jabi or Hindu immigrants. Most were from soldiering and farming backgrounds, and many settled in the agricultural sector of California. An estimated 6,000 to 7,000 rural immigrants arrived and settled in the United States between 1890 and 1917. After an interruption of nearly 50 years, Pakistani immigration resumed in the late 1960s, following the adoption of the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act. This second wave witnessed a steady upward trend in the number of Pakistanis admitted into the United States. Most have arrived as family units and typically came with university degrees in hand or under student visas to pursue degrees in the United States. Many are highly skilled and thus are in high demand in the American economy. These immigrants are financially well off, with household incomes well above the median income in the United States. On the other hand, a proportion of immigrants at the close of the 20th century are less-skilled persons who have been admitted through the immigration serviceÊs diversity visa lottery program and other channels.
