    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 21, No. 1 (1999) FOOTBALL’S FERTILE CRESCENT Pittsburgh sandlots no place for the faint of heart By Eric Poole Reprinted from The Record The story of Western Pennsylvania football begins in the boxing ring. Before the days when anyone with a closet full of belts and three initials could declare a slate of boxing champions in weight classes at 12-ounce intervals, the term "World Boxing Champion" meant what it said. And in those days, from 1923-1926, Harry "The Pittsburgh Kid" Greb sat atop the middleweight division. Greb’s promoter was a Duquesne University graduate from the North Side of Pittsburgh, a guy who could have boxed in the Olympics, but instead opted for minor league baseball before turning to putting on sporting events. Promoting was Arthur J. Rooney's path to fame. In fact, it was his path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In the early 1920s, he joined a radio shop owner to form -- and play for -- football teams such as the Majestic Radios, as well as the Rooney Reds, along with his brothers Dan and Jim, and finally, the Hope Harveys. Occasionally, the champion pugilist joined his promoter on the gridiron and Greb's presence wasn't the only similarity between the two sports Art Rooney became famous for promoting. "My mother always said that they would brag about how good (his football teams) were,” recalls Dan Rooney, Art's son and the current Pittsburgh Steelers president. "Because if they were losing a game in the fourth quarter, they started a fight and therefore the game would end and they would say, ‘We didn't lose,"' Dan Rooney recalls.

The Rooney Rule was adopted by the NFL in 2003, named for Dan Rooney, Pittsburgh Steelers owner. Not a mandate. The rule doesn’t force teams into hiring quotas but rather encourages them to interview minority candidates. Lingering inequalities. In law firms, minorities represent 7.5 percent of partners and minority women constitute only 2.5 percent of partners. Best practices. The NALP first compiled US statistics on minorities (specifically, attorneys of color) and women in partnership ranks in 1993. That year, minorities accounted for one in 40 (2.55 percent) US partners and women accounted for one in eight (12.27 percent) partners. About a decade later, between 2004 and 2006, the New York City Bar performed a survey and found minorities accounted for one in 20 (5 percent) partners, and women accounted for one in six (<16.6 percent) partners. Even though law school graduation rates in the United States have been approximately the same across genders for decades, and graduation rates of diverse students significantly increased, women accounted for only one in five (21.46 percent) partners in 2015, and minorities accounted for only one in 13 (7.52 percent) of partners.

Joining the first-year eligible, are 12 modern-era players and a contributor. The 15 modern-era finalists, along with the two senior nominees announced in August 2011 (former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jack Butler and former Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins guard Dick Stanfel) will be the only candidates considered for Hall of Fame election when the 44-member Selection Committee meets. To be elected, a finalist must receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent. Although technically a first-year eligible candidate, Parcells has been a finalist twice before (2001, 2002) following his announced retirement as head coach of the New York Jets in 1999. At the time the Hall of Fame By-Laws did not require a coach to be retired the now mandatory five seasons. Parcells returned to coach the Dallas Cowboys in 2003 and the five-year waiting period was in effect when he retired from coaching in 2006. The live auction included a trip to London for an NFL game this fall, an opportunity to fl y with the Steelers team and attend their game in Kansas City this year, and a one-of-a-kind original painting of the six quarterbacks created JUSTICE by noted Pittsburgh Sports artist, Dino Guarino.
