Franco Harris President, Super Bakery Former Steeler & Pro Football Hall
Franco Harris President, Super Bakery Former Steeler & Pro Football Hall of Famer Franco Harris is well known for his outstanding career in the National Football League, one so productive that it earned him a 1990 induction into The Pro Football Hall of Fame. He also was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2011. During his years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Harris set the standard for NFL running backs - big, fast and agile with explosive cutback ability. He established many team and league records, played in nine Pro Bowls, and led the Steelers’ charge to four Super Bowl victories. Franco was named MVP of Super Bowl IX. His “Immaculate Reception” in the final seconds of the 1972 AFC playoff game against the Oakland Raiders is considered to be the greatest individual play in NFL history. After football, Harris applied himself to his college degree in Food Service and Administration. He started out in the early 1980’s with a small distribution company called Franco’s All Naturèl, focusing on high quality, natural products. This is where and how Harris learned the business, driving thousands of miles, meeting with potential customers, c-store chains and distributors. THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 26, No. 4 (2004) THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN by Coach TJ Troup The day after Christmas in 1954 the Cleveland Browns hosted the Detroit Lions for the NFL title. It was the third consecutive year these two teams would decide the championship. The Browns had lost three consecutive championship games, including the last two to the Lions. Browns QB Otto Graham had not played particulary well in those three losses, and since he was the “trigger” man in the Cleveland offense, and a man of intense pride, this was the “crossroads” game of his career. Graham responded to the challenge by contributing five touchdowns in a 56 to 10 victory. Otto completed 9 of 12 passes for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns, and scored 3 himself on short runs from scrimmage. Though he announced his retirement, Otto eventually returned for one final season in 1955. Graham again led the Browns to the title, this time defeating the Rams in the Los Angeles Coliseum 38 to 14. When assessing a quarterback’s career how much emphasis should be placed on his passing statistics? Long after Otto Graham retired, the NFL began to use the passer rating system to evaluate the passing efficiency of each individual quarterback. Using that system how efficient was Graham, and where does he rank in comparison with other champion quarterbacks? The passer rating system is divided into four equal categories; completion percentage per pass attempt, yards gained per pass attempt, touchdown percentage per pass attempt, and interception percentage per pass attempt. Is there a simpler way of stating this? We want our team to complete as many long passes for as many touchdowns as possible in as few attempts as possible, without throwing an interception.

THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 16, No. 3 (1994) ROTE & BLANDA: TALE OF 2 QBS Birth of the AFL in 1960 changed the course of two careers By Bob Gill Any reasonably attentive sports fan is aware that chance can play a significant role in a player's career. An injury can give a backup his big break, while bringing a veteran's career to a premature end. A star's ill-timed holdout can be another player's ticket to fame and fortune. And so on - it happens every season. Usually, breaks like these benefit rookies or younger players who haven't had a chance at a regular job. But one of the most interesting "right-place-at-the-right-time" stories involves a pair of ten-year veterans whose places in football history were determined after their NFL careers ended. It happened in the 1960s, and the players involved were a couple of pretty fair quarterbacks: George Blanda and Tobin Rote. But let's start at the beginning ... Blanda broke in with the Bears in 1949, but the 12th-round draft choice saw little action behind Johnny Lujack and aging Sid Luckman. He played even less at QB for the next two years, throwing only one pass and spending most of his time as a linebacker and kicker. Meanwhile, Rote had been taken by the Packers in the second round of the 1950 draft and suffered through a tough rookie season, throwing a league-high 24 interceptions. Facing a challenge from a talented passer named Bobby Thomason in 1951, he improved his passing stats and really shone as a runner, leading the team with 523 yards and leading the league with an average of 6.9 yards per carry.

THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 21, No. 1 (1999) FOOTBALL’S FERTILE CRESCENT Pittsburgh sandlots no place for the faint of heart By Eric Poole Reprinted from The Record The story of Western Pennsylvania football begins in the boxing ring. Before the days when anyone with a closet full of belts and three initials could declare a slate of boxing champions in weight classes at 12-ounce intervals, the term "World Boxing Champion" meant what it said. And in those days, from 1923-1926, Harry "The Pittsburgh Kid" Greb sat atop the middleweight division. Greb’s promoter was a Duquesne University graduate from the North Side of Pittsburgh, a guy who could have boxed in the Olympics, but instead opted for minor league baseball before turning to putting on sporting events. Promoting was Arthur J. Rooney's path to fame. In fact, it was his path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In the early 1920s, he joined a radio shop owner to form -- and play for -- football teams such as the Majestic Radios, as well as the Rooney Reds, along with his brothers Dan and Jim, and finally, the Hope Harveys. Occasionally, the champion pugilist joined his promoter on the gridiron and Greb's presence wasn't the only similarity between the two sports Art Rooney became famous for promoting. "My mother always said that they would brag about how good (his football teams) were,” recalls Dan Rooney, Art's son and the current Pittsburgh Steelers president. "Because if they were losing a game in the fourth quarter, they started a fight and therefore the game would end and they would say, ‘We didn't lose,"' Dan Rooney recalls.
