56TH ANNUAL

Hall of Fame Celebration ——— Saturday, April 10, 2021 ——— 3:00 pm Virtual via ZOOM

S OF THE EPER GAM ‘KE E’ Director’s Message

Welcome to the 56th Annual MFCA Hall of Fame Awards Celebration!

Among the several guiding principles of the MFCA is to preserve the past, recognize achievement and honor accomplishment. The MFCA Hall of Fame Awards Celebration is an evening of joy, pride and gratitude to those ‘Keepers of the Game’ who, through their dedication to the Game, have earned the admiration, thanks and praise of colleagues and community in an evening of celebration.

The MFCA is proud to recognize these extraordinary ‘Keepers’ who yesterday, today, and we know will tomorrow, represent the very best values of the MFCA and of the game itself. There are few fraternities like the fraternity of football coaches and few huddles like the huddle of the GAME.

This evening, as we honor achievement and accomplishment, let us all renew our commitment to football, its everlasting preservation, and its vital role in the fabric of our lives.

2020 HALL OF FAME CELEBRATION 3 MFCA Code of Ethics

PREAMBLE One of the distinguishing characteristics of a profession in education may be that its members are cognizant of, and perhaps dedicated to, rendering a service to humanity. As educators who choose to coach football, we must understand that the justification for football is that it provides educational and physical values for those who play the game, and the game essentially belongs to the players who choose to play it. The welfare of the game depends on how coaches live up to the spirit and letter of ethical conduct, and how coaches, as educators, model ethical conduct, and remain mindful of the trust and confidence placed in them by colleagues, players and the public.

PURPOSE This code of ethics has been developed to protect, promote, and preserve the best interests of the game and the coaching profession. Its primary purpose is to clarify and distinguish ethical and professional practices from those which are detrimental. Its secondary purpose is to emphasize the value of football as an experience that contributes to the overall education of the student-athlete and to stress proper functions in relation to schools, players and the public.

ARTICLE ONE | Responsibility To Players 1. Coaches shall be aware of the tremendous influence they have on the education of the student-athlete; therefore, they shall never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of character and integrity. 2. Coaches shall follow or create and enforce a set of training rules for players that reflect the positive values of abstaining from drugs, alcohol and tobacco. 3. Coaches shall never place the value of winning over the safety and welfare of players. 4. Coaches shall not exert pressure on faculty members to give players special consideration. 5. Coaches shall show respect to all players by treating them with integrity and honesty in both verbal and nonverbal behavior, regardless of their role or contribution to the team. 6. Coaches are responsible for their players’ actions on the field and must not permit them to perform with the intent of causing injury to opposing players. 7. Coaches shall not seek unfair advantage by teaching deliberate unsportsmanlike behavior to players; they shall instruct players to play within the written rules and within the spirit of the game at all times.

ARTICLE TWO | Professional Behavior 1. Coaches shall exemplify the highest moral character, behavior and leadership. 2. Coaches shall display modesty in victory and be gracious in defeat. 3. Coaches shall promote ethical relationships among fellow coaches. 4. Prior to, and following contests, coaches for the competing teams should meet and exchange cordial greetings to set the correct tone for the event.

ARTICLE THREE | Sportsmanship 1. Coaches shall exhibit, model and teach good sportsmanship. 2. Coaches shall exert their influence to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and by working closely with cheerleaders, pep clubs, booster groups, parents and administrators.

ARTICLE FOUR | Scouting It is considered ethical to scout opponents only during games and agreed upon scrimmages, and within the des ignated rules of the conference or section by-laws. The head coach is responsible for the actions of his scouts.

ARTICLE FIVE | Relationships With Game Officials Coaches shall respect the integrity and judgment of the game official. Coaches shall not indulge in conduct which would incite players or spectators against officials. Public criticism of officials is considered unethical.

Mike Turner grew up in Pennsylvania, graduating from Montoursville High School. He attended college at Lycoming College in Williamsport and then later at the -Twin Cities.

Mike has been a giver his whole life – to the MFCA and to high school athletics. He has donated many hours to the MFCA by taking photos of games and of the Hall of Fame and award celebrations along with the All-Star Game. Mike summarizes his career this way, “The highlight of my sports photography career has to be high school football, especially the All-Star Games for nearly 30 years.”

A 2012 recipient of the MFCA Distinguished Service Award, Mike credits game managers Mark Sandbo, Jim Dotseth and Dave Fritze as huge contributors to the game’s success. Mike would also recognize Ron Stolski for his great leadership of the MFCA.

“In life it isn’t often that you get an opportunity to work in an Mike Turner area that you have a passion for,” Mike said. “I was fortunate Varsity Photos to be able to have that opportunity. During the course of my nearly 30 years of photography, I think I photographed over 125 Minnesota football teams. During those 30 years I have had the privilege of meeting many outstanding coaches – several of which reside in this Hall of Fame – which makes this induction even more humbling to me. I have had so many wonderful experiences in photographing teams and working with the coaches. It would be difficult to highlight any one event.”

Mike is married to Joyce and has four children: Shawn, Kim, Shannon and Ryan. Mike has traveled around the world, including Europe, Panama, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, South America, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska.

Walter Hunting was a 1915 graduate of Marinette High School in Marinette, Wisconsin. After graduation he attended Lawrence College in Appleton. His college education was interrupted when he entered the service in World War I. He finished college in 1922 with a degree in education. His first teaching position was in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, from 1922-1927.

Walter began his career at Duluth Denfeld High School in 1927 where he coached football for 28 seasons. Walter amassed a 153-62-15 record from the years 1927-1955. During those seasons he had 6 undefeated teams, 12 city/conference championships, and one official state championship in 1948 presented by the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s Litkenhous Ratings Championships. There were also three “mythical” state championships claimed by newspapers in 1927, 1935 and 1942.

In 1928, Hunting’s team was ranked in the top 10 nationally and attended Knute Rockne’s football camp. He then Walter Hunting published his innovative “Y” formation offense, aka Duluth Denfeld “Wishbone,” in the Athletic Journal in March of 1942 and High School Division was again asked to expand on it in the May issue of the Athletic Journal. In 1948, he was selected as Co-Coach of the Year in Minnesota and Northern Minnesota’s Coach of the Year as well. That year he coached in the high school All-Star Game as the North’s head coach.

On his 25th anniversary of coaching at Denfeld, an assembly was held in his honor. He was recognized with these words: “It isn’t championships won that make Walt Hunting great. Boys learn more than a game; like honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. Nobody can possibly be associated with Walt Hunting and not be better for it because he symbolizes everything great about America.” Walt was also honored in a even more lasting way; the Denfeld mascot, the “Hunters,” was named after him.

Mike Quist is a 1968 graduate of Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Minnesota where he was an eight-time letter winner in football, hockey and track. He was named All- Conference and All-State in football in 1967.

After high school, Mike attended the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and then St. Cloud State University. He began his teaching and coaching career in Gaylord, Minnesota. Mike moved to Alexandria in 1984 where he taught Rural Minnesota CEP until 1991. He then moved to the Runestone Education District where he taught until 2015 as a social studies teacher and football coach.

During his coaching career, Mike amassed an overall record of 165-59. While at Gaylord the teams he coached were 84-10 winning eight conference titles, three section titles and three state championships in 9 seasons. When he moved to Alexandria, he coached for nine seasons winning five conference titles and four section titles. Along with these accolades, Coach Quist had ten different players and fellow Mike Quist coaches write in to urge the committee to select him for Gaylord High School induction in the MFCA Hall of Fame. One of coach Quist’s former players says this about him, “Coach Quist would be High School Division the first person to tell you winning isn’t everything. There are many other joys in coaching than just winning. Taking a sub-par team that lacks talent, but thrives on desire and puts their hearts on the field every Friday night would be a TRUE highlight for Coach Quist.”

Mike is married to Cheri and has two children Becky and Andy. He still volunteers as a defensive line coach in his free time and enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren.

The Don Swanson Award represents exemplary service to the MFCA. It is presented annually to a member of our association who personifies what the late Don Swanson exemplified: unconditional service to and for football in Minnesota. “Swannie” was a respected teacher, coach, administrator and friend to all who knew him. His passing in 2009 left us all with a void. He was a proud graduate of South High school and Gustavus Adolphus College and a lifelong educator in the city of Minneapolis. His work as part of the MFCA clinic is legendary and he will never be replaced. In honoring “Swannie,” we remember his sense of humor, his quick wit, his engaging charm, and, most importantly, his tireless efforts on behalf of students and coaches. He was one of our finest — a true ‘Keeper of the Game.’
