Distinguishing Quaternary glyptodontine cingulates in South America: How informative are juvenile specimens? Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 63 (1): 159–170. The subfamily Glyptodontinae (Xenarthra, Cingulata) comprises one of the most frequently recorded glyptodontids in South America. Recently, the North American genus Glyptotherium was recorded in South America, in addition to the genus Glyptodon. It has been shown that both genera shared the same geographic distribution in central-north and eastern areas of South America (Venezuela and Brazil, respectively). Although some characters allow differentiation between adult specimens of both genera, the morphological distinction between these two genera is rather difficult in juvenile specimens. In this contribution, a detailed morphological, morphometric and histological survey of a juvenile specimen of Glyptodontinae recovered from the Late Pleistocene of northern Brazil is performed. The relative lower osteoderms thickness, the particular morphology of the annular and radial sulci and the distal osseous projections of the caudal osteoderms suggest that the specimen belongs to the genus Glyptotherium. In addition, the validity of some statistical tools to distinguish between different ontogenetic stages and in some cases between genera is verified. The osteoderm microstructure of this juvenile individual is characterized by being composed of a cancellous internal core surrounded by a compact bone cortex. Primary bone tissue mostly consists of highly vascularized, woven-fibered bone tissue.

CENTRAL AMERICAN PROVINCIALISM AND THE GREAT AMERICAN BIOTIC INTERCHANGE Michael O. Woodburne1,* Alberto L. Cione2,**, and Eduardo P. Tonni2,*** ABSTRACT The age and phyletic context of mammals that dispersed between North and South America during the past 9 m.y. is summarized. The presence of a Central American province of cladogenesis and faunal differentiation is explored. One apparent aspect of such a province is to delay dispersals of some taxa northward from Mexico into the continental United States, largely during the Blancan. Examples are recognized among the various xenar- thrans, and cervid artiodactyls. Whereas the concept of a Central American province has been mentioned in past investigations it is upgraded here. Paratoceras (protoceratid artio- dactyl) and rhynchotheriine proboscideans provide perhaps the most compelling examples of Central American cladogenesis (late Arikareean to early Barstovian and Hemphillian to Rancholabrean, respectively), but this category includes Hemphillian sigmodontine rodents, and perhaps a variety of carnivores and ungulates from Honduras in the medial Miocene, as well as peccaries and equids from Mexico. For South America, Mexican canids and hy- drochoerid rodents may have had an earlier development in Mexico. Remarkably, the first South American immigrants to Mexico (after the Miocene heralds; the xenarthrans Plaina and Glossotherium) apparently dispersed northward at the same time as the first Holarctic taxa dispersed to South America (sigmodontine rodents and the tayassuid artiodactyls).

The fossil comes from an outcrop along the Chuí Creek, Santa Vitória do Palmar Municipality, Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Brazil. It was found in a sedimentary layer of the Lagoon System III, of 40 cm thickness and consisting predominantly of fine sand and up to 20–25% silt and clay, together with other vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, some of which are related to the mammalian taxa of the Late Pleistocene of the Pampean Region of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, of Lujanian age.

The distribution of the species was studied using the panbiogeographical method of track analysis. Six generalized tracks (GTs) and two biogeographic nodes were obtained. The GTs did not completely superpose with the areas of open savanna present in Pleistocene, nor with the biotic tracks of some arthropods typical of arid climate, indicating that these animals avoided arid environment. Overall, the GTs coincided with some biogeographic provinces defi ned on the basis of living taxa, indicating that certain current distributional patterns already existed in Pleistocene. The biogeographic nodes coincided with the borders between the main vegetal formations of the Pleistocene, showing that the type of vegetation had great infl uence in the distribution of the mammalian megafauna.

The Xenarthra Cingulata is one of the most characteristic groups in the Neotropical region. These American endemic mammals comprise several families, among them, the Pampatheriidae (middle Miocene-early Holocene) which are characterized by sharing traits with both the Dasypodidae and the Glyptodontidae. The genera Pampatherium Gervais & Ameghino and Holmesina Simpson, occur in both North and South America. In North America, the species H. floridanus, H. septentrionalis and P. mexicanum are recorded from the late Pliocene to the Pleistocene, whereas H. occidentalis, H. paulacoutoi, H. majus, P. humboldtii and P. typum are recorded in the Pleistocene of South America. New specie of the genus Holmesina is here proposed based on a skull without mandible found at the locality Araras/Periquitos, right margin of Madeira River, municipality of Vila Nova Mamoré, Rondônia State, from the Rio Madeira Formation (late Pleistocene-Holocene).

The ground sloth Megatherium americanum: Skull shape, bite forces, and diet. -Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 46,2, 173-192. Megatherium americanum (late Pleistocene of South America) has traditionally been re- garded a herbivore, but its dietary habits have not been considered in terms of a morpho- functional analysis. This study describes and analyses the morphology of the masticatory apparatus in order to interpret the jaw mechanics of M. americanum, and thus to infer its diet and behaviour. The results are compared with those for the mylodontid Glosso- therium robustum and the extant sloth Bradypus variegatus. The areas of origin and in- sertion of the masticatory musculature were reconstructed, and the moment arms gener- ated by this musculature were estimated so that the mechanics of the feeding apparatus might be described. These analyses indicate that M. americanum was well adapted for strong and mainly vertical biting. The teeth are extremely hypsodont and bilophodont, and the sagittal section.of each loph is triangular with a sharp edge. This suggests that the teeth were used mainly for cutting, rather than grinding, and that hard and fibrous food was not the main dietary component. The diet of M. americanum merits more rigorous analysis, but the evidence provided here indicates that it probably had a browsing diet in open habitats, but also could have fed on moderate to soft tough food.     Hypsodonty in Pleistocene ground sloths M. SUSANA BARGO, GERARDO DE IULIIS, and SERGIO F. VIZCAÍNO Bargo, M.S., De Iuliis, G., and Vizcaíno, S.F. 2006. Hypsodonty in Pleistocene ground sloths. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 51 (1): 53–61. Although living sloths (Xenarthra, Tardigrada) are represented by only two genera, their fossil relatives form a large and diverse group. The evolution of hypsodonty, the crown height of a tooth, has traditionally been viewed as a response to di− etary shifts toward abrasive vegetation. But recent work indicates that hypsodonty is also due to the higher prevalence of grit and dust in more open environments. The teeth of sloths are both high−crowned and open−rooted, or hypselodont, but distinctions between the selective factors acting to produce differing degrees of hypsodonty have not been rigorously con− sidered. A comparative analysis of hypsodonty was performed in eleven species of Pleistocene sloths. It suggests that dif− ferences in hypsodonty may be explained by dietary preferences, habitat and habits. Among mylodontids, morphologic and biomechanical analyses indicate that hypsodonty was unlikely to be due solely to feeding behavior, such as grazing. Some mylodontids (e.g., Scelidotherium leptocephalum, Lestodon armatus, Glossotherium robustum, Mylodon darwini) were capable diggers that likely dug for food, and ingestion of abrasive soil particles probably played a considerable role in shaping their dental characteristics. Increased hypsodonty over time in Paramylodon harlani, however, is apparently due to a change in habitat from closed to more open environments. Geographical distributions of the megatheriids Eremotherium and Megatherium indicate differing habitats as possible factors in hypsodonty differences.
