MAGAZINE DISTRIBUTION Penny Hughes 820253 From the Revd David Stokes-Harrison …

Across our six parishes we have said farewell to Edward and Jane after an unusually long and fruitful period of ministry. The ‘hole’ they leave behind will be felt corporately by the various congregations and personally by many folk and in different ways depending on the relationship enjoyed with them and the particular ministry received from them.

But Edward and Jane would be the first to encourage us all to carry on confidently on our spiritual journeys. As that familiar Sydney Carter hymn puts it ‘From the old things to the new, keep me travelling along with you’. And that is at the heart of this, for ours is a journey of faith in the company of Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord. In that sense, nothing changes. The priesthood carries on, for that includes all of us, for we are the ‘priesthood of all believers’ (1 Peter 2 v5). The leadership role of churchwardens, officers and PCC members carries on, for they are the constant factor in the corporate life of Church of parishes.

The important job of our Lay Ministry Team(s), in which we are greatly blessed, carries on, manning our many services and leading our worship. The spiritual life of our congregations carries on for they are the very heart of the church. In that sense, nothing changes. It could be said that we priests come and go, here for a season and then gone, whereas the leadership and ministry of the church and their congregations are a constant, an ever-present body of worship, a light shining in a dark world, nothing less than a ‘Sign of the Kingdom’.

But it remains a fact that change is challenging, witness the development of the whole new management science – the ‘Management of Change’. John Adams, the second President of the United States of America, went so far as to state that ‘ all great changes are irksome to the human mind’, but it is also true that times of change are also times of great opportunities.

So, we face a new era in the life of our Benefice, an era which begins with the search for a new Rector. A lot of work has already been done, most notably the preparation of our parish profiles and the advertisement for this position. More work awaits our leadership team and those involved in meeting the applicants and conducting the interviews. It is a fundamental Christian principle that when something vital occurs in the organisation and life of the church then that process must be surrounded by prayer. We all need to pray constantly, both privately and corporately, for the right result, namely that the Lord would bring to us the right person to take on this important role, the ‘Lord’s elect’ for His church, in simple terms – ‘Thy will be done’.

There is nothing new ‘under heaven and on earth’ and change is certainly not new. Change has always been with us. William Ralph Inge, that formidable theologian and Dean of St Pauls thought that. He even postulated that, on leaving Paradise, Adam reputedly said to Eve ‘My dear, we live in an age of transition’. So it has been from the beginning of time and so it will always be. Let us embrace this time of change and pray that God will bless it.

May God bless you all as well as Edward and Jane on the next stage of their journey.

FROM THE REGISTERS

FUNERALS 3rd November at St Peter’s, Edgmond – Richard James Percy Gough of Market Drayton. The service was followed by interment in the churchyard.

BURIAL OF ASHES 11th October at All Saints, Forton – Dorothy Heathcote.

FROM THE EDITOR

Thank you to Chloe Simms for the beautiful Christmas picture on our front cover. The Year 6 pupils at St Peter’s School were invited to produce some Christmas themed designs and they came up with some excellent pictures, making it a difficult task to select the seven best. Chloe’s picture was chosen for our magazine cover and Harry Bailey’s design was chosen for the Carol Service Sheet. A drawing by Celeste Yap is being used for the church Christmas card, and for the four Advent pew sheets in Edgmond, pictures by Maisie Gallier, Daisy Heys, Ollie Rothner and Nellie Pearce were selected. A big “thank you” goes to all the children and many congratulations to those whose pictures were chosen. “Thank you”, too, to Mrs Penny Westgate for setting the task again this year.

The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will be for the month of February 2018 and the deadline for contributions is Sunday, 7th January. This date can come as a bit of a shock after all the Christmas and New Year celebrations, so do please be prepared and let me have them in good time – they can be delivered to me at the address on the inside front cover, or preferably emailed to me at [email protected]. Photos of all the activities going on in our villages are also very welcome.

Don’t forget that you can also read this magazine online on both the village and church websites (addresses on the front cover).

COMPLINE

A short service of Compline (Night Prayer) will be held in St Peter’s, Edgmond on the four Thursdays of Advent in December, starting at 8.30 pm (following Choir practice).

6

CHILDREN’S ADVENT WORKSHOP in St Peter’s Church, Edgmond on Saturday 9th December from 2 pm – 4 pm

We warmly invite all children to attend this year’s Advent Workshop and join in this happy event.

There will be activities for the children and lots of Christmas cards and decorations to make during the session. We will begin the afternoon with short prayers and some Christmas songs and carols.

We would be grateful if pre-school children are accompanied by an adult. Tea and coffee will be available, and squash and biscuits for the children. All adults are most welcome to stay for the whole session, unless you would prefer to get on with your Christmas preparations or shopping!

There is no charge for your children’s attendance at the workshop.

If you would like your child or children to attend the Advent Workshop, application forms will be distributed from St Peter’s School and Edgmond Owls Nursery. They will also available in church, and from Mrs Jane Norton at 3 Bayley Hills, Edgmond.

ADVENT SUNDAY

Advent Sunday (the first day of the new Church Year) falls this year on December 3rd and at 6.30 pm we will hold our traditional service “From Darkness to Light” at St Peter’s, Edgmond. The service begins with the church being in complete darkness representing the world before the coming of Jesus, and as the service proceeds with readings and hymns telling us of the prophesied coming of Jesus, so more candles are lit until, at the Gospel reading of the Annunciation (the Archangel Gabriel visiting the Virgin Mary), the whole church is full of light. Everyone is welcome at this service which marks the start of our preparation for Christmas.

RING OUT THE OLD! RING IN THE NEW!

The traditional ringing out of the Old Year and the ringing in of the New Year will take place on Sunday, December 31st in St Peter’s Church, Edgmond starting at 11.30 pm, with prayers for the New Year at about midnight followed by a short time of fellowship. Everyone is warmly invited to this event. 7

8 THE CHRISTINGLE SERVICE - December 24th 2017

The Christingle Service will take place on Christmas Eve at 3.00 pm in St Peter’s Church, Edgmond.

If you would like to order a Christingle, special envelopes will be distributed through the School and Edgmond Owls from the beginning of December, and will be also be available from the Village Shop or from the back of the church. Please return the envelopes including your donation, indicating the number of Christingles required, to the Village Shop or the box at the back of the church, by Monday 18th December so that sufficient oranges can be prepared. It may be difficult to guarantee orders after this date.

We are very grateful to Greenfields who have offered again this year to donate the oranges for the Christingle. Due to their generosity all your donations, including the collection at the service, will go to the Children’s Society.

Please note: All those who have attended this service in previous years will know how crowded the church becomes. Health and Safety Regulations advise that –

 No prams or pushchairs are brought into church for this service so that the aisles and exits can be kept clear in case of emergency.  It is strongly advised that long hair is tied back, and non-flammable clothes are worn.  We also ask that you explain to your children the importance of standing very still when their Christingle candle is lit, and that they hold their Christingle orange carefully with both hands. Please encourage older children to set a good example to little ones.

Please help us to keep all our children safe.

HEALING SERVICE

Just to remind you all that the next monthly Healing Services at St Peter’s, Edgmond will be held on December 10th and January 14th at 4.30 pm (please note the earlier time during the winter months). Everyone is welcome at a Healing Service. It is not a curing service, but a healing service, and is a short, quiet, contemplative service.

COFFEE AND CHAT

The next Thursday Coffee Mornings at St Peter’s Church will be on December 21st and January 18th following the 9.30 am Holy Communion Service. You don’t have to attend the service to be able to have a cup of coffee. Just turn up at the church at about 10.00 am or thereabouts, and join us for coffee (or tea) and a chat. We shall look forward to seeing you.

9 BELLRINGING NEWS

On Sunday 1st October St Peter’s bellringers rang a full peal of Rutland Surprise Major to bid farewell to the Rector and Jane on their retirement after 26 years in the parishes. The ringers are very grateful for his strong support over the years.

Some of you may wonder what we mean by a full peal so I will briefly try to explain. The word peal can have a number of meanings – it can describe a set of bells in a tower, it can be a verb meaning to ring or sound bells. But in our case it is a noun with a very specific meaning - a length of ringing which consists of at least 5000 changes (each bell rings at least 5000 times), following a specific pattern or ‘method’, and without repeating any changes and without stopping to rest. In our case the peal took 2 hours and 53 minutes to complete. The length of time will depend to some extent on the number and weight of the bells being rung, heavier bells ringing more slowly.

The method name ‘Rutland’ is comparable to the name of a tune in music. There are thousands of methods in existence, though only a relatively small number are rung regularly. The term ‘Surprise’ signifies the class or type of method, while the term Major denotes it was rung on eight changing bells.

Ringing a peal is a significant achievement for most ringers, and peals are often rung to celebrate significant local, national or personal events. However, some ringers become ‘addicted’ to ringing peals for their own sake and a few people will ring 100 or more each year. Others like to break peal ringing records and recently the longest peal ever rung on twelve bells was rung on Alderney. It consisted of over 25,000 changes and took over 16 hours of continuous ringing by the same band! Quarter peals are literally a quarter of a peal and generally take about 45 minutes, and are more commonly rung as they are more easily achieved by most ringers.

Another significant event among Edgmond bellringers has been the Silver Wedding of Rob Herbert and Annette Bailey. They started learning to ring about three years ago and had both rung one quarter peal previously, but on Monday 30 October they rang together in a quarter peal for the first time, to celebrate their big event. The method was Plain Bob Doubles and was rung by

1 Annette Bailey 4 Maurice G Ingram 2 Rob Herbert 5 Matthew Lawrence 3 Gail Lawrence (conductor) 6 Edric W Broom

Our congratulations to Rob and Annette.

In September we entered the Association bellringing competition at Ightfield. In a very close contest we were sadly beaten into second place by a mere 1.5 faults.

If you would like to learn more about bellringing or perhaps learn to ring, please come along to the tower on any practice night or contact the Tower Captain, Edric Broom on 825851 for more information.

PEAL ATTEMPT Saturday 2nd December 2017 from approx. 4.30 pm to approx. 7.30 pm

On Saturday 2nd December, the weekend of the Christmas Tree Festival, the local bellringers plan to attempt a full peal of over 5000 changes. The ringing will start at about 4.30 pm and if successful finish about 7.30 pm.

In order to avoid disturbance of the ringers’ concentration the church door will be locked during this attempt.

We apologise for any inconvenience. Thank you.

We do thank the members for their kindness and generosity and I would also like to thank them for all the help and support they have given me in my ministry at St Peter’s, for there are so many things I could not have done without the Mothers’ Union.

12 SUNFLOWERS

At this grey time of year it’s nice to think of sunflowers! The children planted sunflower seeds at the Good Friday Children’s Workshop in April and here are some of those that grew the tallest.

On the left – nearly as high as the rooftops! – is the winner, grown by Salma Humphreys-Edres, at 260 cm. In the centre are Monty Edge’s 183 cm flower and Hannah Chapman’s which measured 201 cm. On the right is Isaac Ward with his lovely 160 cm sunflower. Well done everyone!

Anne Price – Chairperson, Rod Bunyan – Treasurer, Heather Anderson – Secretary along with Anne Furniss, Colin Brown and Charlotte Wood. Chris Taylor was also there in his capacity as Church Warden.

Among the items discussed were ideas for activities for this and the coming year. We hope to continue the good work of the last Friends Committee and raise funds to help with the refurbishment or repair of the fixtures and fittings of St Peter’s. Some of the ideas we have had are:

• Continuing with St Peter’s strong tradition of music we have several choirs, bands and singing groups lined up to entertain

• Flower arranging competition

• Art exhibition

• Speakers

• Bring and buy sales

• Beetle Drive among other ideas which you shall hear about in the future.

To start off with we have the Beaumaris Singers on 18th December. Cost on the door is £7, £4 for students and under 16s free. We would be grateful for contributions for the raffle and there will be refreshments available.

If there are any particular activities you would like to see and join in with at St Peter’s, please feel free to contact me on my home number 01952 407525. Please support your beautiful church. It’s worth it! Anne Price, Chairperson

SIAMS INSPECTION

St Peter’s Primary School, Edgmond

15th October 2017

Our Church school of St Peter’s had its SIAMS inspection last month. A SIAMS inspection takes place every 5 years, and is the Church’s equivalent of an OFSTED inspection.

SIAMS stands for Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools, and its purpose is to evaluate the distinctiveness and effectiveness of the school as a Church school, and how well the distinctive Christian character and ethos of the school ensure the development and achievement of the whole child.

In his very full and detailed SIAMS report, The Revd Dr Jason Phillips includes comments such as St Peter’s School is a wonderfully caring school which reflects its Mission Statement that “The fruit of the Spirit is love, peace, gentleness, joy, patience, goodness, faithfulness and self-control” (Galations chapter 5) and that these fruits are well developed and deeply embedded in the school’s core Christian values of which respect is the key focus. He says that the care shown by the school’s headteacher for pupils and staff is exceptional, and her Christian leadership consistently models and drives the school’s Christian values. Dr Phillips also says that the school’s collective worship is a most joyful and valued aspect of school life and that it is inclusive and results in a strong sense of Christian community.

I am delighted to report that St Peter’s School was classed as OUTSTANDING in every area of the inspection.

I would like to congratulate Mrs Hawkins and all her dedicated staff on this excellent achievement. Jane Norton, Foundation Governor

15 PARISH WARDEN’S REPORT

Villagers will be pleased to know that no crimes were reported in the village during October. (Information supplied by courtesy of PCSO Ann Moore of the Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team.)

As Christmas is rapidly approaching, there is no harm in repeating some of the Police “evergreens” -

Presents and valuables should not be left in an unlocked car, and should ideally be locked in the boot, out of sight.

Similarly, it is not a good idea to display all of your presents under the Christmas tree in full view of a window (especially in an insecure property – i.e. not locked.)

If you are going away, try to leave your home appearing as though you are still there – get a good neighbour to move your post daily, and use a timer to turn on, and off, lights (preferably also a radio) in conjunction with curtains being closed or opened by that good neighbour of yours. The more normal things appear, the less likely you are to have a burglary.

Have a crime free Christmas and New Year. John Keeping (813125)

GIFT FROM HARPER ADAMS

On Tuesday Nov 7th our former Rector Edward and Jane were presented with gifts from Harper Adams University at a gathering at the University, attended by fellow chaplains, members of staff and also members of the Christian Union, to mark his retirement as a Chaplain for 26 years.

Edward was presented with a card, a beautiful photograph of the old college buildings in the snow and also a crystal paperweight with the University’s Coat of Arms engraved upon it. Jane was presented with a bouquet.

Edward thanked the University for their beautiful and generous gifts and said how much he had enjoyed his time as their Anglican Chaplain. He went on to say that being a Territorial Army Chaplain, and the County Chaplain to the ACF, had strengthened his belief in the necessity for a Chaplaincy at the University, not to convert people, but to be there for everyone, and to remind people that there was something beyond all the research and work going on.

INNER WHEEL

On page 8 of our October issue we published an appeal from the Inner Wheel for knitting wools as well as items for the International Aid Lorry. Now Pat Muir has sent us the following update:

18

Many thanks for your help. The Inner Wheel Rally is in October and we supported five charities, in particular:-

1. InterCare, which “Tackles medical waste to save lives in Africa”.

2. National Police Aids Convoy, which encourages young ladies to wear and make bridal and evening wear. Started in Russia but now is centred in Bangladesh.

3. Medic Malawi, tackling damage caused by malaria to the bones in the inner ear, cataracts in the eyes and the education of girls – the 3 “E”s. The education is aimed at girls by the building of a hostel for them. “If you educate a girl, you educate a whole family”. Education is not free and boys get “first bite of the cherry”- hence the necessity for the hostel.

4. The Fistula project in Ethiopia, which is 8,000 feet above sea level so at night it gets very cold. We have been knitting squares to make shawls for the babies. Great strides are being made over there. A school for student midwives has been opened. The course lasts 3 years and the first thing they have to learn is reading and English. There are now 88 clinics with midwives in, and the age for first time pregnancies has risen, now that the girls are better educated in their health. A German doctor has also devised an operation to repair old fistulas.

5. The Cardinal Wiseman Trust. This is a school in a deprived area in Coventry. It helps the children realise that they are not as poor as they thought. It also teaches them Christian values. About a dozen 6th formers go out to a school in Africa, twice a year. They have to find the fare themselves; they are there for one week and sleep under canvas. Part of their baggage allowance is allocated for aid for the school and we have been making dresses for that luggage.

Inner Wheel is the club created for female relations of Rotarians and many of our projects are joint ones. Many of our husbands were, or are, keen members, as my husband was.

Some of the charities are ongoing ones, so we will be making shawls for many years to come. The rest of the aid is sent by a lorry which belongs to International Aid which is loaded in Lilleshall in October and is sorted by them.

19 EDGMOND ROLL OF HONOUR MEMORIAL BOARD – MYSTERY SOLVED!

Thanks to those who responded to the recent appeal for information on Flying Officer Frederick William Clare, (RAFVR/144607) Navigator, killed in Lancaster ND908 on 27/28 May 1944 whilst serving with No.75 (New Zealand) Squadron, Royal Air Force Bomber Command.

F/O Clare's parents lived in Edgmond for only a short time, which explains why he is on the Memorial Board in the Church. He had been married to Roma Evelyn for only a few months before losing his life. He and his crew lie in Wavelgem Communal Cemetery, Belgium (GPS 50.808380 / 3.177653).

Left - as a 'White Flash Boy' and right - as an Officer Navigator. Airmen accepted for aircrew training - such had all volunteered to fly - placed a scrap of white linen in the forepeak of their Service cap.

The other airman on the Memorial Board was RICHARDSON, Harry (547939) : Aircraftman 1st Class. (RAF). Killed 05/07/41; Runnymede Memorial, Panel 57. Son of Henry and Ethel Richardson, of Newport, Shropshire.

EDWARD WARD WRITES….

Jane and I would like to thank you for the lovely gifts given to us when we left the parish. Jane would like to thank you for the beautiful orchid and I would like to thank you especially for the books on Shropshire, which included articles on my home town as well as an obituary on an old friend. I shall enjoy reading them and sipping a glass or two of the Scottish liquid which was also part of the present. Thank you all so very much for such thoughtful and personal gifts.
