Working in the arts, I think about this question a great deal. Values define who we are as individuals and as organizations. They inform our understanding of the world around us. Our values determine the choices we make, the individuals we most cherish in our lives, the kinds of organizations we choose to support. Yet today we are living through a time in which our core values are being challenged in ways we once thought unimaginable. Which makes me wonder what Jean Coulthard's values were. She was, like Barbara Pentland and Violet Archer, far ahead of her time, which I imagine is never a terribly comfortable place to be. At a time when women were actively discouraged from pursuing professional careers in music; when orchestras were entirely male; when there were few if any role models, Jean Coulthard was appointed the very first composition teacher at UBC in 1947. Which means she must have believed in being true to herself no matter what, to having the courage of her own convictions, particularly given what an original voice she was at a time when Boulez wrote that "all composition other than twelve-tone serialism is useless." Jean Coulthard was cosmopolitan, evinced by the portrait of her featured on the cover of this programme. Through her life and studies she embraced French Impressionism and its myriad Asian influences; the folk influences of Bartok whom she consulted about her work on a number of occasions; the nationalist influences of Vaughan Williams, with whom she studied, and of Copland, with whom she corresponded; even the serialism of Schoenberg, though it was such a far cry from her own more pastoral, and pastorally-oriented aesthetic.

Preparing to conduct these pieces involved a lot of work, much of which I have included in this thesis, including: researching biographies of the composers, arrangers, and poets associated with the pieces; doing literary analyses of the texts of the pieces; musical observations of the pieces; and critical reflection concerning rehearsal plans, cultivating the sound of the ensemble, and putting together the recital.

Though they are often programmed as children’s operas, Sendak and Knussen labeled the works fantasy operas, but have provided little commentary on any distinction between these labels. Through examination of their notes and commentary on the operas, published reviews and analysis of the operas, e-mail interviews conducted with operatic administrators and composers of children’s operas, and my analysis of the two works I intend to show that Sendak and Knussen had different target audiences in mind as they created these works. ii Preface This dissertation is an original intellectual product of the author, Leah Giselle Field, with the guidance of professors Dr. Alexander J.     FANCIES AND INVENTIONS STEPHEN CHATMAN ON THE CONTRARY Robert Onofrey, clarinet; Eastman Musica Nova, Sydney Hodkinson, conductor HESITATION John Loban, violin; Maura Chatman, celesta STEPHEN CHATMAN (b. Faribault, Minnesota, 1950) studied composition at Oberlin College (B.M.) and the University of Michigan (M.M., D.M.A.). He has received three composition awards from Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), a Charles E. Ives Scholarship from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, a commission from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Fulbright-Hayes Grant for study in West Germany. His works have been published by E.B. Marks, Jobert-Paris, Agape, and Dorn Publications, and have been broadcast on the CBC. Presently (1980) he is assistant professor of composition at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C. Chatman writes: “ON THE CONTRARY, for solo clarinet and eight virtuoso instrumentalists, was composed in 1974 for Robert Onofrey and the University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble. As the title implies, the work involves contrasts of several musical elements: loud versus soft, solo versus ensemble, and pedal points in static textures versus active voices. The ideas are developed and ordered so that the form is like a maze which is initially complex and finally utterly simple. The 'suspended' coda, as if out of the maze, is a contrasting and separate world of sound and time. “The combination of muted violin and celesta in HESITATION results in a more delicate effect than would the traditional combination of violin and piano. The work implies a musical plot, a dialogue which, initially, through false starts and frequent repetitions of rhythmic and tonal ideas, establishes a hesitating quality.

    The Choral-Orchestral Works of Stephen Chatman by Trevor Michael Dearham A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Trevor Michael Dearham 2021 The Choral-Orchestral Works of Stephen Chatman Trevor Michael Dearham Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2021 Abstract Canadian composer Stephen Chatman has composed noteworthy works within multiple musical genres, thus achieving international stature. Included among his compositions are several choral- orchestral works, which comprise the focus of this study. In my research, I determined the musical characteristics of Chatman’s choral-orchestral works, described how those works may be effectively prepared for performance by conductors, and assessed Chatman’s contributions to the choral-orchestral genre in Canada. A review of a wide assortment of literature and resources concerning Stephen Chatman’s works in the context of Canadian choral-orchestral repertoire produced fruitful results. I examined numerous and varied accomplishments of the composer using information found in dissertations and writings devoted specifically to Chatman and his music. Further research using materials located in the Chatman fonds at Library and Archives Canada yielded a comprehensive documentation of Chatman’s professional career and musical output. In addition, I achieved ii substantial insight through personal interviews with Chatman and seven other associated individuals who provided unique and informative data about his music. In this thesis, I discuss distinctive musical and textual characteristics of seven of Chatman’s choral-orchestral works: four major works composed for symphonic choir and full orchestra, and three shorter, single-movement works.
