UBISOFT AND 20TH CENTURY FOX TEAM UP FOR VIDEO GAME BASED ON JAMES CAMERON'S "AVATAR" Paris, FRANCE – July 24, 2007 – Today, Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced that it will develop and publish the video game based on Twentieth Century Fox's “Avatar,” the upcoming feature film written and directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker James Cameron, whose previous films include “Titanic,” “True Lies,” “The Abyss,” “Aliens,” “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” “Avatar” is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More than ten years in the making, Avatar marks Cameron's return to feature directing since helming 1997's Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time and winner of eleven Oscars® including Best Picture. The “Avatar” cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. Academy Award-winning visual effects house, WETA Digital, renowned for its work in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy and “King Kong,” will incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters.     James Cameron has a very distinctive style of directing. All of his films are controversial and no doubt packed with dramatic music and effective camera angles to portray an important idea for each film. Some of his master pieces include Aliens, The Abyss and True Lies, but the films I choose to study are Avatar and Titanic (1997). For Avatar the scene I'm analysing is "The Falling Tree" scene and for Titanic I choose "The Sinking Ship" scene, both extremely dramatic and melancholic components of the films, each filled with extremely convincing techniques. Element 1: Sound effects and Music In Titanic, James Cameron strived to, and successfully did, make the viewer's feel as if they were encountering the experience of being on a sinking ship through the careful and effective use of sound effects and music. James Cameron's purpose in Avatar was to show destruction versus peace, which was again successfully shown through useful sound techniques. The well-known song "My Heart Will Go On", from Titanic, is continuously played throughout the film. The tune stays the same but the style of song switches from being sung emotionally with Opera singers to being played sadly on Violin to being played intensely by louder and dramatic instruments. James Cameron's decision to use this continuous use of tune is effective as it makes the audience feel comfortable since they know the tune well, and the use of changing the source of the song just helps add something a little different each time, and also helps to set the emotion for that certain scene.

    tripleC 9(2): 657-667, 2011 ISSN 1726-670X http://www.triple-c.at Avatar: A Marxist Saga on the Far Distant Planet Yong Tang [email protected], Department of English and Journalism, Western Illinois University, USA Abstract: This article presents a critical and cultural study on Avatar, the Hollywood science fiction blockbuster. After using classical and current Marxist theories to examine James Cameron’s major films and using textual analysis to explore Chi- nese bloggers’ comments on the film Avatar, the paper argues that, like Cameron’s other major films, Avatar is a cinema- tographic manifesto of Marxism. The class struggle between capitalists and proletarians is evident throughout the movie’s whole narrative structure. Cameron is not neutral in his approach to cinematic worldview. Like in his previous films, also this time Cameron expresses solidarity with poor people and struggles against the rich. The confrontational nature of the world- view embedded in the movie has been used by audiences in China, Brazil, Palestine and elsewhere as a weapon to fight against social oppression.
