Gjerdalen and Norgren Win Kaiser Maximilian Lauf A newsletter from Visma Ski Classics, the long distance ski championship. Press Photos by Magnus Östh Gjerdalen and Norgren win Kaiser Maximilian Lauf A cat and mouse game in the women’s race between Britta Johansson Norgren, Lager 157 Ski Team, and Masako Ishida, Team Koteng, and a surprise breakaway in the men’s race defined the day . The third Visma Ski Classics race, and the first one in Visma Alp Trophy, took place in Seefeld, Austria, as Kaiser Maximilian Lauf, 60 km, welcomed pro skiers after the long holiday break. The conditions were perfect for racing, and the athletes were able to bask in the sunshine as they negotiated their way through a challenging course. In the women’s race, Johansson Norgren and Ishida broke away right after the bang and continued their play of back and forth almost to the end. Norgren got a gap in the Leutasch valley, and Ishida got caught up by the chasing group of three; Sara Lindborg, Team Serneke, Karin Vikhagen Gjeitnes, Team Santander, and Lina Korsgren, Åre Ski Team. After leaving the valley, Ishida managed to catch Johansson Norgren again in the long climbs due to her diagonal striding. The last downhill section proved to be crucial to Lindborg as she was able to pass Ishida in the final kilometers. “It was my plan to go full speed from the beginning,” the happy winner Johansson Norgren admitted. “I knew Ishida will go fast in the climbs, but I felt strong from the beginning. It was really hard skiing alone in the valley, and when Ishida caught me up, I wasn’t sure if I could win the race. But the last part of the course was perfect for me and I had no problems securing the victory today.” In the men’s race, a decisive breakaway happened once the lead group reached the Leutasch valley. Vinjar Skogsholm, Team Parkettpartner, and Andreas Holmberg, Team Serneke, decided to attack and got away from the pack. Their lead extended quickly, and by the time they reached the first climb after the valley, the chasing group was about 90 seconds behind them. Holmberg realized that the opportunity had presented itself and attacked while Skogsholm couldn’t keep up with the impressive pace. Only Tord Asle Gjerdalen, Team Santander, and Ilya Chernousov, Bauer Ski Team, were strong enough to chase after the lonely wolf in the front. The former was able to catch Holmberg about three kilometers before the finish. Today’s “Visma Skier of the Day” Holmberg couldn’t follow Gjerdalen but managed to keep Chernousov behind him. “I didn’t like the fact that we gave too much leeway for Holmberg and Skogsholm,” Gjerdalen acknowledged after the race. “I’m happy that Ilya helped me in our attempt to catch up with Holmberg, but I wasn’t really sure if we were going to make it. You never know how the other person is feeling in the front, what kind of skis he has and what goes on in his mind. But I managed to win today and it feels great to be back on the top.” Johansson Norgren took home all the points today as she was the fastest skier in the sprint and the climb competitions, she also is in the lead of Visma Alp Trophy. Her teammate Anton Karlsson, won the men’s sprint competition while Morten Eide Pedersen, Team BN Bank, managed to cross the climb point as the fastest skier. The youth categories are now led by Evelina Bångman, Team Mäenpää, and Ermil Vokuev, Russian Marathon Team. Team Santander and Lager 157 Ski Team are sharing the lead position before they all head to Switzerland next weekend where La Diagonela, 65 km, is next in line in the tour.     International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, 2019, 14, 1190-1199 https://doi.org/10.1123/ijspp.2018-0471 ORIGINAL INVESTIGATION Double-Poling Physiology and Kinematics of Elite Cross-Country Skiers: Specialized Long-Distance Versus All-Round Skiers Øyvind Skattebo, Thomas Losnegard, and Hans Kristian Stadheim Purpose: Long-distance cross-country skiers specialize to compete in races >50 km predominantly using double poling (DP). This emphasizes the need for highly developed upper-body endurance capacities and an efficient DP technique. The aim of this study was to investigate potential effects of specialization by comparing physiological capacities and kinematics in DP between long-distance skiers and skiers competing using both techniques (skating/classic) in several competition formats (“all-round skiers”). Methods: Seven male long-distance (32 [6] y, 183 [6] cm, 76 [5] kg) and 6 all-round (25 [3] y, 181 [5] cm, 75 [6] kg) skiers at high international levels conducted submaximal workloads and an incremental test to exhaustion for determination of peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) and time to exhaustion (TTE) in DP and running. Results: In DP and running maximal tests, TTE showed no difference between groups. However, long-distance skiers had 5–6% lower VO2peak in running (81 [5] vs 85 [3] mL·kg−1·min−1; P = .07) and DP (73 [3] vs 78 [3] mL·kg−1·min−1; P < .01) than all-round skiers. In DP, long-distance skiers displayed lower submaximal O2 cost than all-round skiers (3.8 ± 3.6%; P < .05) without any major differences in cycle times or cyclic patterns of joint angles and center of mass.

    Faculty of health Pacing Strategy in Long Distance Cross-Country Skiing A study looking at female and male cross-country skiers at different performance level and how the track topography may influence their pacing strategy. Eva Bjørkesett Master’s thesis in Sport Science, May 2019 Abstract Background: The pacing strategy applied by athletes has significant effect on their performance in endurance sports. Although several studies have investigated pacing in different endurance sports, little information is known about pacing strategies in long distance cross-country (XC) skiing, for both sexes. This master thesis presents a novel approach to investigate what kind of pacing strategy elite and non-elite skiers perform during a long distance XC skiing race, and if different terrain will influence their pacing strategy. We’ve estimated the skiers lap times on every passed 10 km, uphill and downhill terrain. Method: On the same day 100 XC skiers (50 female and 50 male skiers) completed an individual time trial in a Norwegian national championship, of long distance. Female XC skiers completed a 30 km race, while male XC skiers completed a 50 km in free technique. The trial was 10 km long. Emit Time Station ETS1 recorder split times of number of laps, time used in one chosen uphill terrain and one downhill terrain. Results: Independent of performance level, both groups of female and male XC skiers decrease in average lap times in all measured distances (10 km lap, uphill and downhill terrain) with strong statistical significant p<0.01. Female and male elite group (EG) adopt a more even positive pacing strategy, than female and male non-elite group (NEG).

The British Team for the MWC in Beitostolen was rather small at the best of times, but then became even smaller due to illness and injury, and this was a great shame. You can read about the event later in this Newsletter, and I say that it was a shame because it proved to be a very popular event (not the 1 480 of Seefeld in 1998, but still 1 035, which compares very favourably with Minneapolis last year of just 746). Okay, the accommodation might have been rather expensive, but reports are that the conditions were excellent. For 2020, the Masters moves on to Cogne, in the popular Aosta Valley of Italy. The TV concept has been developed by IEC in Sports who in 2007 Philip Parun Jizerska Padesatka began to distribute the Swedish race, Vasaloppet, outside of Sweden. Vasaloppet has existed for more than 80 years and is steadily growing in popularity. After seeing the TV share for Vasaloppet grow domestically to 73,9% of the Swedish TV Gloria Trettel Marcialonga viewers in the morning, when the race starts, on the first Sunday in March every year. Seeing Vasaloppet become a TV Rune Bergsodden Birkebeinerrennet institution and part of the folklore in Sweden the next step in order to grow further was to internationalize the TV product outside of Sweden to potentially reach new audiences and markets.
