Darwis as Supervisor I and Aswin Baharuddin as Supervisor II, Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Hasanuddin University. This reseach portrays the rise of Eurosceptic Party votes in European Elections 2014 which brought the Front National of France, the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) of Britain and the Five-Star Movement of Italy into the EU Parliament. This reseach focused on the strategy used by Eurosceptic Parties in the campaign so they successed making voters in their contries switch to vote them. The aims of this reseach to find out the facts that cause the rise of Eurosceptic Party votes and the impact to the European Union. The type of research used is qualitative. Data collecting technique used is library research, such as from books, journals, documents, articles, newspapers, or from electronic media (internet). The results of this study showed that rise of Eurosceptic Party votes caused by the failure of European Union‟s policies. Because of the worsening of European Union policy implementation in France, Britain and Italy. It causes the spread of Euroscepticism to public opinion. Therefore, voters tend to prefer parties with a more benefical policies to their countries. • Right Wing Populism in Europe: a Discoursive Rhetoric Focused on European Union, Ethno-Nationalism, Democracy and Globalization
RIGHT WING POPULISM IN EUROPE(DE CUETO NOGUERAS) Article RIGHT WING POPULISM IN EUROPE: A DISCOURSIVE RHETORIC FOCUSED ON EUROPEAN UNION, ETHNO-NATIONALISM, DEMOCRACY AND GLOBALIZATION DE CUETO NOGUERAS, Carlos Key words: Right-wing parties, populism, Euroscepticism, ethno-nationalism, democracy, globalization. 1. POPULISM IN SOCIAL SCIENCES AND POLITICAL ANALYSIS. Despite the fact that the term “populism” is highly ambivalent, it is increasingly used in the social sciences and has become a particular field in political analysis, without being precisely defined. Populism is a particular political rhetoric, which extremely simplifies complex problems and offers apparently easy, painless but at the same time vague solutions. However, due to the negative connotation of the term, far-right populist parties prefer to define themselves to be centrists, reject most of labels normally associated with them -con- servative, right-wing, racist, xenophobic- and threaten to take legal actions or denounce in some cases media companies and journalists who do. After a Swedish journalist of Sveriges Radion called the Sweden Democrats party xenophobic in 2013, the party reacted with a complaint lodged to the broadcasting regulator. In 2014, the Supreme Court of Hungary ruled that Jobbik couldn’t be labelled “far-right” in any domestic radio or television transmission. They present themselves as common men and women who understand and represent people, especially the under-privileged and under-represented segments, who know and voice their concerns, in contrast to the corrupt and established elites. Populism relies on charismatic leaders with decisive roles in their parties and on popular support. Populism respects the basic criteria of democracy but rejects all existing ideologies as insufficient for the particular society and tries to find and adopt its “own new path”.

  • Political Parties and Terrorism: Why Ban Batasuna?
Political Parties and Terrorism: Why ban Batasuna? By Angela K. Bourne Politics, School of Humanities, University of Dundee, Dundee DD1 4HN [email protected], phone: +44(0)1382 388628 Paper presented at Elections, Public Opinion and Parties Annual Conference University of Exeter, 9-11 September 2010 Abstract This article examines the 2003 ban of radical Basque nationalist parties Herri Batasuna, Euskal Herritarrok and Batasuna for their integration in the terrorist group Euskadi Ta Askatasuna. It does so by examining the political context in which proscription took place and testing two hypotheses developed from the broader literature on party bans addressing the question: Why do democracies ban political parties? Case study analysis on Spain supports the two hypotheses - that democracies ban anti-system parties when alternative forms of marginalization are not effective and that ‘intolerant democracies’ are more likely to ban political parties than ‘tolerant democracies’. 1 Introduction In 2003, the Spanish Supreme Court banned Herri Batasuna (HB), Euskal Herritarrok (EH) and Batasuna, three Basque separatist parties linked to the terrorist group Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA). Since then, the return of Batasuna - effectively successor to both HB and EH - to electoral politics under a different guise has been repeatedly blocked by the courts. The effects of proscription are far-reaching. A banned party may no longer contest elections, loses all entitlements such as access to state funding, and its assets are to be confiscated and sold off by the state (Vírgala, 2003-4: 622). Prior to proscription, ETA’s political wing (henceforth Batasuna) contested elections over some twenty years.

8 When History Breathed Down Our Necks In the trial of the past before the future, contemporary memoirs are testimony, history is the judge, and the verdict is almost always iniquitous, whether owing to the falseness of depositions, or their absence, or the ignorance of the court. Fortunately, it is open to appeal, and the light of new centuries, projected from afar on centuries past, denounces this judgement of the shadows. – Auguste Blanqui One must be modest enough to tell oneself that the moment in which one lives is not the unique, fundamental or eruptive moment of history, on the basis of which everything reaches a culmination or begins again. – Michel Foucault, 1983 For Michel Foucault, ‘the urgency of posing the question of the subject differently’ was the point at which such authors as Althusser, Lacan and himself converged, all charged with ‘structuralism’ despite their denials. According to Foucault, what mattered was to challenge the supremacy of the sovereign subject that then reigned over European philosophy by way of phenomenology or existentialism. With the general strike, this subject repressed by structure resur- faced and suddenly proved its strength. In a spectacular reversal, interest turned once more to the ungraspable fl uxes of a desiring subjectivity. Foucault, a great deconstructor of the classic subject, set out to explore the manner in which the subject is constituted by way of its resistances to ‘practices of subjugation’.1 After a century of defeats and betrayals, the defeated would fi nally have the right to revenge and reparations: 99781781681084781781681084 AnAn ImpatientImpatient LifeLife (834h)(834h) 1st1st revisedrevised proof.inddproof.indd 8989 004/10/20134/10/2013 112:08:462:08:46 90 An Impatient Life Things really are starting to shake, The bad days will come to an end.

  • A TTIP Resolution for People, the Environment and Democracy
For a TTIP resolution that puts people, the environment and democracy before short-term profit and disproportionate corporate rights Dear Member of the European Parliament, In light of the European Parliament’s ongoing work on a resolution on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership TTIP (also known as Transatlantic Free Trade Agreement or TAFTA), we are writing as an EU-wide coalition of 375 civil society organisations who share a deep concern about the various threats posed by the agreement. We represent a wide range of public interests including environmental protection, public health, civil rights, agriculture, consumer rights and protection of food and farming standards, animal welfare, social and labour standards, workers’ rights, migrant rights, unemployment, youth and women's issues, development, public access to information and digital rights, essential public services including education, integrity of financial systems, and others. We welcome the fact that the European Parliament is forming its opinion on the TTIP and the role that the Parliament has already played in organising democratic public debates on the issue. We call on all MEPs to agree on a strong resolution that makes clear that the European Parliament will reject any future trade or investment agreements that will not serve the public interest and threaten important rights acquired in long democratic struggles in the EU, US and the rest of the world. For this purpose, we would like to share with you our key demands on the TTIP negotiations, which we developed together with our partners in the US and which were first released in a joint civil society statement in May 20141: 1.

European Parliament Elections 2014 RESEARCH PAPER 14/32 11 June 2014 Elections to the European Parliament were held across the 28 states of the European Union between 22 and 25 May 2014. The UK elections were held concurrently with council elections in England and Northern Ireland on 22 May. The UK now has 73 MEPs, up from 72 at the last election, distributed between 12 regions. UKIP won 24 seats, Labour 20, the Conservatives 19, and the Green Party three. The Liberal Democrats won only one seat, down from 11 at the 2009 European election. The BNP lost both of the two seats they had won for the first time at the previous election. UKIP won the popular vote overall, and in six of the nine regions in England. Labour won the popular vote in Wales and the SNP won in Scotland. Across the UK as a whole turnout was 35%. Across Europe there was an increase in the number of seats held by Eurosceptic parties, although more centrist parties in established pro-European groups were still in the majority. The exact political balance of the new Parliament depends on the formation of the political groups. Turnout across the EU was 43%. It was relatively low in some of the newer Member States. Part 1 of this paper presents the full results of the UK elections, including regional analysis and local-level data. Part 2 presents a summary of the results across the EU, together with country-level summaries based on data from official national sources. • European Network for the Fair Sharing of Working Time
European network for the fair sharing of working time 0 Presentation brochure 2018 2 Why is this network needed? Societies have set decisive steps in radically reducing the working time of their people over the course of time. Helped by massive increases in productivity, working time in many countries has been reduced to previously unimaginable levels. This evolution, however, has slowed and even reversed in some countries while in others it continues in the form of part-time work. If creating precarious part-time jobs gives the illusion of a low unemployment rate, the multiplication of small contracts has the main effect of impoverishing employees, especially women. Evolution towards a collective decrease in working time has certainly slowed, but this does not mean there are no good (and less good) reasons for a further decrease in working time. Decreasing the time spent at work is seen as at least a partial solution for such long-standing problems as unemployment, gender inequality, unsustainable economics, the ageing population, the burn-out epidemic, work-related health hazards and many more. Working time reduction is a (more or less) promising solution for all these issues, but whether or not it will deliver depends on how the reduction in working time is put into practice. Perhaps surprisingly, there is a wealth of options between introducing simple legislation decreasing the full-time norm, on the one hand, and letting people decide for themselves to work less in the form of part-time work, on the other. What is crucial is the creativity of actors in the field in designing working time reductions centred on delivering their specific objectives.
