We started on Monday with a heartfelt assembly from the Year 13s who gave some inspirational messages to the pupils accompanied by a video of their time in the Sixth Form. Pupils are continuing to work well at home, actively supported by our teachers. Learning is happening and co-curricular clubs are thriving too. In recognition of the many challenges that pupils are facing, we have Local History Month introduced The Forum to provide another outlet for pastoral care. The month of May is Local History Month and our Year 7 pupils have just embarked upon a short enquiry on this topic With all the hard work by pupils and in their History lessons. The end of this term will see a number of key and long-standing PTA members leaving the PTA as their children move on to new pastures. It is important to all of us that our PTA continues to thrive and grow as our school does. The Forum—Now Open for Pupil Feedback This week saw the launch of The Forum, a dedicated online space, for pupils to let us know how they are finding learning at home and give feedback on their lessons and the work they are doing. The Forum will remain open while pupils are learning at home, they can add feedback at anytime, and send us ideas whenever they get that light-bulb moment. Access to The Forum is via an icon on the pupils’ iPads. We look forward to hearing their thoughts and ideas! New: Inside Dunottar—Teachers’ Blog We have also launched the first in our series of Teachers’ blogs on our website. Dunottar’s Head of English, Mrs Lewis, opens the series with the story of how she developed her passion for books and reading. “When I was eight, my aunt visited, with her car packed to the roof with boxes of books that she had enjoyed as a child. There were so many of them, that my father built rows of bookshelves in my bedroom, rows so high that I needed a chair to reach the top one. It was from that moment that I became a voracious reader. I went on adventures with female detective Nancy Drew; learnt about hobbits, magic and dragons; and, rebelling against my mother, who had told me that I was far too young for Homer, grappled with The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Our Year 11s and Year 13s have now finished all of their Public Examinations and we wish them a well-deserved, relaxing break after months of studying and preparation. The Year 12s have enjoyed several days off curriculum to focus on preparing for their university applications next term. Activities included a talk from the University of Surrey about how to choose the right university course and a practical session on drafting and writing a personal statement. They went on a trip to Sussex University and were given the chance to practice their team building and leadership skills at Tulley's Farm, where they successfully broke out of two escape rooms! Our Year 9s and 10s enjoyed a thoroughly successful Commerce, Culture and Community week (CCC). They were treated to a poetry workshop by Ash Dickinson, one of the outstanding performance poets of his generation, heard first-hand from a Holocaust survivor and worked hard putting the finishing touches to our outdoor classroom. As well as a trip to Greenwich, they also learned how to weave baskets outside in Pupils survive Zombie Apocalypse the sunshine on Dunottar’s lawns. Years 7 and 8 experienced an amazing STEM With the end of year exams out of the way, pupils in Year 7 and 8 enjoyed week. All the pupils worked towards the three days off curriculum to complete the British Science Association's nationally recognised bronze CREST award for bronze CREST Award, which provides STEM enrichment opportunities to STEM which provides a real-life experience of inspire and engage 5 to 19 year-olds.

This week saw a successful Year 10 History GCSE trip to the London Docklands Museum. A full report will be in next week’s newsletter. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, the children who went to Iceland over half term had a thoroughly enjoyable time as you will see later in the newsletter. Forecasts are showing that we may also have some wintery weather over the next few weeks.
