    Thank you to everyone who came along to our fourth Senior Schools’ Fair on Saturday. You answered the invitation to attend with customary Hazelwood enthusiasm and we were delighted to welcome over 220 parents to the event. It was lovely too to be able to welcome a growing number of families from outside of the immediate Hazelwood family to the Sports Hall, fulfilling the intent of making it a local community event. The 35 schools who came along were both impressed and bowled over by the turnout and the professional way in which the Fair was staged. They all said that it was one of the best that they attend (and some of them attend quite a few!) They were also all full of praise for the five Year 8 pupils who were asked to be on hand to help with the smooth running of the morning. From carrying cups of tea and coffee, to amassing a good stock of brochures to aid with future parent meetings on Senior School choice, to capturing the event on camera, Izzy, Francesca, Archie, Jack and Charlie were fabulous. They did not stop all morning and carried out their requested duties with a smile, presenting themselves as impeccable ambassadors for the school. They were part of the buzz which filled the Sports Hall from the moment the doors opened to the last dying minutes during which we had to usher the remaining parents to their cars! It was a hugely positive event and one which set an optimistic tone for the rest of my weekend.

It was formed in 1950 by the merger of the preparatory department of Reigate Grammar School and the choristers of St Mary's Church. In 2003, the school returned to its former status as the nursery and junior department of Reigate Grammar School. In 2017 Chinthurst School joined the RGS group of schools. The school is set in 15 acres of beautiful parkland and sports fields in the centre of Reigate, a pleasant market town in Surrey. Proximity to Gatwick airport, the M25 and rail links to London make this a popular area for parents with young families. Reigate St Mary's is one of a small number of schools with a traditional choir of boys and lay clerks led by the school Head of Choral Music. The RGS Godfrey Searle Choir sings regularly in school and church services, and performs in concerts throughout the UK and Europe, with music from the 15th to the 21st centuries and texts in several languages. The Godfrey Searle Choir Trust offers a choral scholarship to each chorister which can be subsequently transferred to Reigate Grammar School. The majority of pupils leave the school at age eleven and transfer to Reigate Grammar School, however, a small number each year move on to other senior schools which have included Dunottar, Box Hill School, Hurstpierpoint College, Worth School and Ardingly College.

    Three cheers for the community of Hazelwood School and Nursery! The School and Nursery are once again fully alive with the sounds of happy children at work and at play. Friends have returned after the summer break to be reunited with tales of holidays from across the globe. Our new families have arrived (some from the far-flung corners of the globe) to begin their Hazelwood adventure. I was delighted to throw open the curtains of my living room on Wednesday in the knowledge that soon the Head’s Terrace below would be the bustling route to and from the Baily Building for those excited Year 3 children making the transition from Year 2 and the Chestnut Building. A school, without children is like a balloon without air. It has shape, form and colour but it isn’t, until it has air, that the balloon comes alive and takes on a personality which captivates and opens up endless possibilities. Welcome back one and all. I am delighted that the 2017-18 academic year, which holds so much promise already, is underway! Although we get a lot done during the holidays when rooms are empty, the school comes alive again when the children return and what a great first two days they have had. The excitement on their faces as they met up with old friends, were introduced to their new teachers and enjoyed the new equipment and play space was a pleasure to see and there is a great positive buzz around the whole school. Thank you to FOSMA who kindly donated the new trim trail in the playground that the children have been enjoying - there is a constant queue! We have three new members of staff this term and a new appointment which you will already be aware of. Miss Alex Brotzel and Mr Felix Tiley join us as GAP students and Mrs Rachel Faulkner joins the marketing team. Mr Hollands has now retired and Miss 'Maria' Ibaceta has joined the teaching staff as our MFL Coordinator and teacher for children right down to the Early Years. During the holidays you will have received a communication from me sharing with you how well our senior school students had done in their public examinations. I am delighted that our former RSM pupils successfully performed slightly better than the very high average RGS student. At GCSE, 85% of their grades were 9-7 (Formerly A** - A) and at A Level, 65% of their grades were A* or A. It is nice to confirm once again that our typical RSM cohort more than hold their own at our senior school, reassuring us that the foundations t we put in place at RSM really do prepare them for both secondary schooling and beyond.

Our Year 11s and Year 13s have now finished all of their Public Examinations and we wish them a well-deserved, relaxing break after months of studying and preparation. The Year 12s have enjoyed several days off curriculum to focus on preparing for their university applications next term. Activities included a talk from the University of Surrey about how to choose the right university course and a practical session on drafting and writing a personal statement. They went on a trip to Sussex University and were given the chance to practice their team building and leadership skills at Tulley's Farm, where they successfully broke out of two escape rooms! Our Year 9s and 10s enjoyed a thoroughly successful Commerce, Culture and Community week (CCC). They were treated to a poetry workshop by Ash Dickinson, one of the outstanding performance poets of his generation, heard first-hand from a Holocaust survivor and worked hard putting the finishing touches to our outdoor classroom.
