    Thank you to everyone who came along to our fourth Senior Schools’ Fair on Saturday. You answered the invitation to attend with customary Hazelwood enthusiasm and we were delighted to welcome over 220 parents to the event. It was lovely too to be able to welcome a growing number of families from outside of the immediate Hazelwood family to the Sports Hall, fulfilling the intent of making it a local community event. The 35 schools who came along were both impressed and bowled over by the turnout and the professional way in which the Fair was staged. They all said that it was one of the best that they attend (and some of them attend quite a few!) They were also all full of praise for the five Year 8 pupils who were asked to be on hand to help with the smooth running of the morning. From carrying cups of tea and coffee, to amassing a good stock of brochures to aid with future parent meetings on Senior School choice, to capturing the event on camera, Izzy, Francesca, Archie, Jack and Charlie were fabulous. They did not stop all morning and carried out their requested duties with a smile, presenting themselves as impeccable ambassadors for the school. They were part of the buzz which filled the Sports Hall from the moment the doors opened to the last dying minutes during which we had to usher the remaining parents to their cars! It was a hugely positive event and one which set an optimistic tone for the rest of my weekend.

    Three cheers for the community of Hazelwood School and Nursery! The School and Nursery are once again fully alive with the sounds of happy children at work and at play. Friends have returned after the summer break to be reunited with tales of holidays from across the globe. Our new families have arrived (some from the far-flung corners of the globe) to begin their Hazelwood adventure. I was delighted to throw open the curtains of my living room on Wednesday in the knowledge that soon the Head’s Terrace below would be the bustling route to and from the Baily Building for those excited Year 3 children making the transition from Year 2 and the Chestnut Building. A school, without children is like a balloon without air. It has shape, form and colour but it isn’t, until it has air, that the balloon comes alive and takes on a personality which captivates and opens up endless possibilities. Welcome back one and all. I am delighted that the 2017-18 academic year, which holds so much promise already, is underway!   • You Were Promised a Nutshell Full of Happy News
    You were promised a Nutshell full of happy news, well here it is! Whilst it was a strange and eerily silent end to the spring term with, understandably, other things on all our minds, the events and highlights of the final fortnight should rightfully be celebrated so that they, and the children behind them, don’t go unnoticed. Too much was sacrificed as a result of restricted school life and enforced closure, for the pupils of Hazelwood, their grit and determination in the face of difficult and disappointing times, to go unrecognised. This Nutshell will bring you news of those moments all of which will serve to remind anybody who may have already forgotten, how blessed we are to belong to a school community which cares, which challenges and which creates inspiration and opportunity for each and every one of our pupils. I sincerely hope that, as a community, we will be back together again before the end of the summer term to more formally recognise the achievements, the efforts and the progress of our whole community through what is turning out to be a most momentous, challenging and unforgettable year. Well done to Ollie N who delivered the lead role in Henry the Tudor Dude with majesty and mastery. His level of regal performance was outstanding and was rarely off the stage during the full 90 minutes of the Year 6 play. His magnificence was matched by the whole cast, every one of whom was superb. Our Remote Learning Programme started in earnest after three intense weeks of development.

Appendix 2 GBA AREA FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION NO: 001 Description of Area for Further Investigation: This is a large area, which abuts the border with the London Borough of Croydon and therefore is of strategic significance. I t was split up into the following smaller analysis areas (AA) to enable its detailed consideration. AA 1: To the east this area comprises an open field defined by a tree line. AA 2: Adjacent to AA1, and to its west, are green hillsides with wooded areas. To the north it abuts a residential estate, including a school, which fall within the LB Croydon. These developments are on the ridge and directly abut the boundary. AA 3: This analysis area comprises an open valley with dense wooded hillsides and to its north it abut s a residential estate in Selsdon (LB Croydon). It also abuts land comprising the Selsdon Wood Nature Reserve. A part of this area serves as a golf course with associated build ings. AA 4: At the western end of this analysis area, the land is relatively level and comprises tree lined fields, some of which are used for grazing. Built form is present in the form of stabling. This area in part abuts built-up areas falling within Selsdon (LB Croydon). 1 A: Map of Area for Further Investigation 2 B: Why was this selected as an Area for Further Investigation?   • Finally, After a Summer Filled with the Sounds of Renovation And
    Finally, after a summer filled with the sounds of renovation and construction, the corridors of Hazelwood School and Nursery came alive with the noise of returning children, happy to see their friends again and eager to meet their new teachers. Another year of excitement, challenge and achievement is underway and it feels great to be back. I look forward to the summer holidays, to the chance to recharge and reflect but I always look forward to the start of a new adventure even more. There is much to be excited about. The summer has been a period of transition and change on both sites with many improvements being made to each and new facilities being invested in to further enrich the experiences of the children. On the nursery site we have a brand new deckling area alongside the Wagtails rooms. This means that all our children have direct access to outside space in which to learn and to play, giving the room leaders greater flexibility to plan an ever diversifying and engaging programme of activities. Top Robins has a protective canopy over their outdoor area allowing access to fresh air learning all year round and the Skylarks’ floor has been re-laid so that tractors and pushchairs can speed around the room smoothly without any bumps and interruptions. It has further enhanced the environment of the room and will shine like a new penny until at least the end its first week after which it will have been baptised (quite rightly) in sand, water, mud and foam as the children set about their learning! Hazelwood School’s Senior Schools’ Fair takes place tomorrow, Saturday 12th September between 10am and 12noon.
