By Andy Carling Brussels falling of telecom map Constructive No 4G for self-proclaimed ‘Heart of Europe’ Ambiguity

ForSong people of a certain for generation Europe in the UK, commonly described as ‘old farts’ by a modern uncaring world, Europe was a rather exotic place. To our fathers and grandparents, it was a place of strange tasting food, odd cheeses and the tedium and horror of the battlefield. To our children it’s just another place across the road. Perhaps, before globalization, each generation discovered its own Europe. For those who were higher up the social scale, Europe occupied a slightly Confucian niche, being the home of the Grand Tour, where young minds might be enlightened by learning and of course, it was the home to Switzerland, where generations of gals were sent to be ‘finished.’ Nobody has explained what that actually entailed and it’s probably best not to enquire. Beyond that, there were books and films. One of the changes in movie making is that it’s all down to quick editing, establishing shots are a rarity and the ‘travelogue’ aspect of storytelling in celluloid has all but disappeared. The earlier Bond films were superb for that, in between the action and seduction we got glimpses of European cities, the roads, the marketplaces and yes, the obvious attractions. he parliamentary elections which took place in Israel on 22 January resulted in a new political situation with two almost Tequally strong blocs: the center-rightist-Ortho- dox bloc gaining 61 seats and the center-leftist- Arab bloc gaining 59 seats. If the electorate´s message of a new bloc-crossing government would be heeded, we might see positive change in both foreign and domestic policies. This might seem paradoxical as the election campaign was almost void of any discussion on substance – such as how to revive the moribund peace process, tackle the Iranian nuclear threat, resolve the growing socio-economic gaps, share the defense burden equally among all groups in society and integrate the estranged Arab mino- rity in the country. Your paintings, our shared culture UK digitalises its artwork, putting it on permanent display By Andy Carling

ritain’s 212,000 oil paintings have just been digitally recorded and placed on- line as part of a project, Your Paintings, Brun by the BBC and the Public Catalogue Foundation. The intention is not just to archive art in public and private hands, but also to involve the public in the project and encourage people to get interested in art and visit museums and galleries in the real world. The paintings are on the BBC website and people are being asked to help catalogue the archive by adding ‘tags’ that describe each art- work. The internet is also providing new ways of organizing and displaying exhibitions. In one section an increasing number of public figures, presenters and others each have short videos, or guided tours, showcasing paintings they have discovered in the collection. James Bond: the empire strikes back By Cillian Donnelly

he James Bond movie franchise cele- brated its fiftieth anniversary towards the end of last year, an event to be cele- Tbrated at this year’s Academy Awards ceremo- ny in Los Angeles on 24 February. The series, featuring the suave British super-spy, played over the years by seven actors of varying abi- lity, has indeed proved to be enduringly popu- lar, with the latest, Skyfall, breaking box office records and garnering largely positive reviews and several awards nominations to boot. The films, stockpiled with boy’s-own adventure, glamorous locations and casual mayhem, continue to appeal, and remain reassuringly formulaic. They present a world of absolutes, removed from the murky realities of cold war espionage or counter-terrorism, and, just as the refusal of Zero Dark Thirty (2012) to take a stand on the US torture of Iraqi terrorist su- spects is helping to pave the way for its accep- tability in the audience’s minds, the Bond films are an advert for the moral incorruptibility of the state.
