Interpersonal Communication Imagining China in the Era of Global Consumerism and Local Consciousness: Media, Mobility, and the Spring Festival. (260 pp.) Co-directors of Dissertation: Arvind Singhal and Timothy A. Simpson Using the Spring Festival (the Chinese New Year) as a springboard for fieldwork and discussion, this dissertation explores the rise of electronic media and mobility in contemporary China and their effect on modern Chinese subjectivity, especially, the collective imagination of Chinese people. Informed by cultural studies and ethnographic methods, this research project consisted of 14 in-depth interviews with residents in Chengdu, China, ethnographic participatory observation of local festival activities, and analysis of media events, artifacts, documents, and online communication. The dissertation argues that “cultural China,” an officially-endorsed concept that has transformed a national entity into a borderless cultural entity, is the most conspicuous and powerful public imagery produced and circulated during the 2001 Spring Festival. As a work of collective imagination, cultural China creates a complex and contested space in which the Chinese Party-state, the global consumer culture, and individuals and local communities seek to gain their own ground with various strategies and tactics. -

Citing growing budget constraints, the US Air Force announced that is considering using small satellites in combination with next-gen software rather than procuring traditional multibillion-dollar, cost-plus spacecraft to replace/replenish its Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Despite awarding a $94 million contract to Ball Aerospace in November to design the Weather System Follow-on Microwave (WSF-M) satellite, the Air Force plans to begin launching small satellites equipped with infrared imaging and electro-optical instruments to monitor battlefield weather starting in 2021-2022. The Air Force is also considering augmenting their current capabilities with inactive NOAA GOES satellites in the near-term. These considerations parallel recent comments by USSTRATCOM commander Gen. John Hyten, who has repeatedly stated that the Air Force currently spends too much time and money developing large, high- cost satellites, and needs to invest in more small satellites for strategic Source: Lockheed Martin and budgetary reasons. Conclusion: Smallsats ready for a DoD growth spurt? With growing evidence of Russian/Chinese anti- satellite technology demonstrations, the Pentagon is becoming increasingly reluctant to spend billions of dollars on monolithic “Battlestar Galactica” satellite systems that place too many eggs in one basket. While not as robust or technologically-capable as high-end spacecraft built by traditional contractor, such as Lockheed Martin, small satellites are orders-of-magnitude less expensive to build, launch, and maintain. -
Only Six Chinese Human Spaceflight Missions
Fact Sheet Updated April 29, 2021 CHINA’S HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT PROGRAM: BACKGROUND AND LIST OF CREWED AND AUTOMATED LAUNCHES China's human spaceflight program, Project 921, officially began in 1992. The program is proceeding at a measured pace. The most recent crewed launch, Shenzhou-11 in October 2016, was the 11th flight in the series, but only the sixth to carry a crew. Shenzhou Spacecraft: Shenzhou 1-4 were automated tests of the spacecraft. Shenzhou-8 was an automated test of rendezvous and docking procedures with the Tiangong-1 space station. The others (5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11) carried crews of one, two or three people and were launched in 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2016 respectively (see list below) Space Stations: Tiangong-1, China's first space station, was launched in September 2011. It hosted the automated Shenzhou-8 in 2011 and two three-person crews: Shenzhou-9 in 2012 and Shenzhou-10 in 2013. It made an uncontrolled reentry at 8:16 pm April 1, 2018 EDT (00:16 April 2 UTC; 8:16 am April 2 Beijing Time) over the southern Pacific Ocean. Tiangong-1 was a small 8.5 metric ton (MT) module. As first space stations go, it was rather modest -- just less than half the mass of the world's first space station, the Soviet Union’s Salyut 1. Launched in 1971, Salyut 1 had a mass of about 18.6 MT. The first U.S. space station, Skylab, launched in 1973, had a mass of about 77 MT. Today's International Space Station (ISS), a partnership among the United States, Russia, Japan, Europe, and Canada, has a mass of about 400 MT and has been permanently occupied by 2-6 person crews rotating on 4-6 month missions since November 2000. -

Introduction The idea of creating a new International Space Agency (tentative title: hereinafter referred to ISA) is only my academic and practical opinion. It is necessary for us to establish ISA as an international organization for the efficient and rapid exploitation of natural resources in the moon, Mars and other celestial bodies. The establishment of ISA as a new international regime is based on the Article 11, 5 and Article 18 of the 1979 Moon Agreement. In order to establish as a preliminary procedure, it needs to make a “ Draft for the Convention on the Establishment of an International Space Agency” among the space- faring countries. -

Lund University Masters (Two Years) in Global Studies Department of Political Science Spring 2014 Per aspera ad astra: Identifying Opportunities for International Cooperation with China in Space Exploration Author: Philippe Cyr Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Christian Göbel Abstract Space exploration is an area of growing international interest and activity. China is an emerging space power, has become increasingly active in space exploration, and has advocated for further international cooperation in various space activities. To identify opportunities for international cooperation proposed frameworks have used technical and policy parameters to locate suitable partners for specific projects. With the goal of more accurately informing these frameworks this paper will explore China’s policy parameters by measuring the degree to which the international environment enables and constrains China’s space exploration ambitions. Specifically, this study analyzes two Chinese civilian space exploration programs and three cooperative space projects with international partners as case studies to identify domestic and foreign policy considerations informing China’s position in. It is found that in addition to national prestige economic development and progress in science and technology development are major motivations for China’s selection of space exploration activities.
