Aceves* During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the Russian government engaged in a sophisticated strategy to influence the U.S. political system and manipulate American democracy. While most news reports have focused on the cyber-attacks aimed at Democratic Party leaders and possible contacts between Russian officials and the Trump presidential campaign, a more pernicious intervention took place. Throughout the campaign, Russian operatives created hundreds of fake personas on social media platforms and then posted thousands of advertisements and messages that sought to promote racial divisions in the United States. This was a coordinated propaganda effort. -

When Childhood Gets Commercialized, Can Children Be Protected?1
When Childhood Gets Commercialized, Can Children Be Protected?1 Juliet B. Schor In 2004, a significant debate about the effects and even the ethics of marketing to children emerged in the U.S. The catalyst has been the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and the related rise in medical diseases such as hypertension and type II diabetes (Surgeon General 2001). Children’s advocates have argued that food marketing is a major cause of the shift to unhealthy diets dominated by added sugar, fat and salt. They point to the billions of dollars of food advertising and marketing which children are exposed to, on television, in schools, on the Internet, and in the grocery store (Nestle 2002, Brownell and Horgen 2003). Although it did not gain much traction before the recent attention to junk food marketing, the critique goes beyond food to include other addictive substances such as tobacco and alcohol, as well as the marketing of violence, unhealthy body images, and materialism. Social scientists and pediatricians have compiled an impressive array of research results about the impact of various aspects of consumer culture on children. (See Robinson et al. 1998, 2001, Sargent et al. 2001, Kasser 2002, Strasburger and Wilson 2002; and Schor 2004, among others.) Ac- tivists have argued that children are suffering from ‘marketing-related diseases’ (see commercialalert.org), and that marketers are engaging in a ‘hostile takeover of childhood’ (Linn 2004, see also Nader 1996). In addition to their opposition to particular products and messages, many critics believe that advertising to child- ren is inherently unfair, even exploitative, because children are unable to under- stand ads or resist their persuasiveness. -

The book also includes comments by seven accomplished persons and a reply to each comment by Judge Wilkey.2 I. JUDGE WILKEY'S THESIS Judge Wilkey opens with his conclusion that our current constitutional system has failed because of three fundamental problems of modem American politics: gridlock, near perpetual incumbency, and unaccountability of our representatives to the electorate.3 Gridlock, says Judge Wilkey, is "the inability to pass con- structive legislation because of conflicting, neutralizing forces built into the system. -

By JOHN HERRMAN AUG. 24, 2016 Open your Facebook feed. What do you see? A photo of a close friend’s child. An automatically generated slide show commemorating six years of friendship between two acquaintances. An eerily on-target ad for something you’ve been meaning to buy. A funny video. A sad video. A recently live video. Lots of video; more video than you remember from before. A somewhat less-on-target ad. Someone you saw yesterday feeling blessed. Someone you haven’t seen in 10 years feeling worried. And then: A family member who loves politics asking, “Is this really who we want to be president?” A co-worker, whom you’ve never heard talk about politics, asking the same about a different candidate. A story about Donald Trump that “just can’t be true” in a figurative sense. A story about Donald Trump that “just can’t be true” in a literal sense. A video of Bernie Sanders speaking, overlaid with text, shared from a source you’ve never seen before, viewed 15 million times. An article questioning Hillary Clinton’s honesty; a headline questioning Donald Trump’s sanity. A few shares that go a bit too far: headlines you would never pass along yourself but that you might tap, read and probably not forget. -
Wanting, Not Waiting
WINNERSdateline OF THE OVERSEAS PRESS CLUB AWARDS 2011 Wanting, Not Waiting 2012 Another Year of Uprisings SPECIAL EDITION dateline 2012 1 letter from the president ne year ago, at our last OPC Awards gala, paying tribute to two of our most courageous fallen heroes, I hardly imagined that I would be standing in the same position again with the identical burden. While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary. -
