THE HISTORY OF WILLIAM HULME'S GRAMMAR SCHOOL MANCHESTER 1887-1980 BY K. P. THOMPSON, B.A. Acknowledgements The author would like first of all to express his sincere appreciation of the great honour done to him by Mr. D.Lloyd Griffiths, F.RC.S., until recently the Chairman of the Governors of William Hulme's Grammar School, Manchester, in inviting him to write this book. He would also like to thank him for the generous help he has received from him in its compilation and revision. His deep thanks are also due to Dr. C. G. Eastwood for the unselfish way in which he made available to him the materials he had gathered about the school over many years. He is also very grateful for the help of his former colleagues especially the late Mr. D.M. Williams and Mr. C.J. Lowe with the text and Mr. R.A. Haynes over the photographs. The valuable suggestions of Mr. W.N. Brewood, a Governor of the School, and Miss H. Lofthouse, a former Librarian ofChetham's Library, have been of great help in the elucidation of William Hulme's somewhat obscure history. Photostats of evidence in their possession kindly sent by Dr. H.L.A. Hart, the Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford, and by the Deputy Librarian of Gray's Inn have provided useful confirmation of some details of William Huhne's biography, on which letters from Lord Clitheroe and Mr. P. Hesketh have also shed interesting light. The author would also like to thank Mr. H.R. Mainprice and Mr.

  • L DTNT Records Relating to the Hull New Theatre 1939- 2008
Hull History Centre: Records relating to the Hull New Theatre L DTNT Records relating to the Hull New Theatre 1939- 2008 Historical Background: The New Theatre which stands on Kingston Square, Hull, opened on the 16th of October 1939 with the Hull Repertory Company production of 'Me and My Girl'. Peppino Santangelo came to the city in 1924 to join the Hull Repertory Company based at the Little Theatre in Kingston Square. After turning the struggling company around, Peppino, organised the reconstruction of the former Assembly Rooms which had first been built by R. H. Sharp over 100 years earlier in 1834 into the New Theatre. Not even the outbreak of the Second World War could halt Peppino’s dream and as the theatre’s first manager, he told crowds of 1939: ‘I have made plans for your future entertainment, always bearing in mind that we are at war and that laughter and not tears should be the dominant feature.’ Performances continued throughout the war when West End productions arrived to escape the bombing in London. The theatre bar was reinforced as a bomb shelter and the building received only one direct hit, in May 1941, which destroyed the front row of stalls and all the props and costumes of the visiting Sadler’s Wells Opera Company. In the late 1960s the Theatre's stage was deepened and the orchestra pit enlarged, whilst at the same time the auditorium was improved with new seating. The theatre closed in January 2016 to undergo a huge £15.9m revamp of the venue, which would see improvements to backstage areas including a new fly tower, used for scenery, lighting and stage effects, a larger stage, and more seating.

WOODALL, MINSHALL, & CO., CAXTON PRESS, OSWESTRY. 1898 M PREFACE. Thk present issue is more or less a pioneer work, and therefore the Editor hopes that additions and corrections will be sent to him in order that a second and more perfect edition may be published, should a demand arise. He apologises for the imper- fections and mistakes among the entries of Dr. Kennedy's time, owing to the absence of an Official Register ; and also for the names which may have been omitted in subsequent years. For in compiling the index he has discovered that his con6dence in the accuracy of Mr. Bentley's lists was somewhat misplaced, as he then became aware of the omission of two or ihree boys, and there- fore fears that the same fate may have befallen others without his perceiving it No doubt, too, the index is very faulty, but as an excuse for this, pressure of parochial work is pleaded. Special acknowledgement of generous help and encourage- ment should be made to the Headmaster, especially for the loan of Dr. Butler's Register, to the Rev^. E. W. Montagu, G. W. Fisher, J. S.
