The study used informal interviewing techniques and examined classrooms for evidence of nine general climate indicators conducive to a literac of thoughtfulness. The first chapters focus on rure America, especially the Deep South, where teachers are educating children to leave their communities. The third chapter describes education on an Indian reservation, where the colonial model is waning. Chapter 4 describes the conflicts and contradictions in a troubled, but typical urban school district unintentionally engaged in undermining literacy efforts. Chapter 5 broadens the notion of "policy environment" and describes the contributions of a governor, a legislature, a state school board, and a district judge.

The formation and development of the Ukrainian school and educational affair as the basis for the professional training of Ukrainian youth in the Western countries in the second half of the XX-th century is examined in the article. The emphasis was given to the complexity and multiplicity of this process, which was caused by the socioeconomic and educational policies of the states, which became a new homeland for the Ukrainians, geography and compactness of their resettlement, employment in the different branches of the economy, the presence in the diaspora of the professional intelligentsia, its national awareness, the state religious life, etc. Accordingly, in different countries (Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Canada, USA, Australia, Argentina), this process was different, more or less intense and had results, but it still remains an object of interest as an important support of native cultural heritage, an inexhaustible source of preserving its spirituality bearers. The institutional forms and types of obtaining of pedagogical education by Ukrainians in the Western countries of the second half of the 20th century, the peculiarity of teaching and educational activities in different types of educational establishment and the main tendencies of the development of the Ukrainian school and educational affairs are presented.

Colonisation is not simply an historical concept but it remains embedded within society and its effects are felt throughout history and therefore it is important to look at the past in order to understand the present and to shape the future. Chapter One provides insight into the methodology employed to provide the foundation and theoretical framework from which the historical data and research can be best understood. Chapter two will take an historical look at education for Mäori in New Zealand. The New Zealand education system holds its genesis in eurocentrism beginning with the first missionary school in 1814. Education for Mäori began as a means of ‘civilising the natives’, to spread the Gospel and was used as a tool to assimilate Mäori to the ways of the European, this was ensured through various acts and legislation. The Education Ordinance Act of 1847 introduced English as the language of instruction in all schools and in 1867 the Native Schools Act was introduced. This act established a number of secular village primary schools known as Native Schools. These schools were used for the education of Mäori children.

    Aspen Institute Roundtable: Opportunities in American Indian Education October 27, 2017 KEY FINDINGS • Since time immemorial, tribes have shown that the key to the educational success of their children is control over their own education. Policymakers should ground their approaches on contemporary models that put language, culture, and social and emotional learning at the heart of their educational systems. • There is a renaissance of Native youth organizing taking place across the country and among their top priorities are language and culture revitalization, and education. • Some of our biggest successes are taking place at the very local level, and some of the strongest near-term success is local. • Youth, community members, and educators agree that there is a serious lack of culturally-relevant curricula and a distinct need to educate non-Native students about local tribal communities. Policymakers should focus on models like the Since Time Immemorial Curriculum in Washington state. • We need to significantly increase resources for Native teacher training pathways and connect them to tribally-controlled education models. • Native communities and education leaders need more resources and focus on models that challenge the current Western definition of success—especially those that rely on testing.     The Impact of Historical Boarding Schools on Native American Families and Parenting Roles The Impact of Historical Boarding Schools on Native American Families and Parenting Roles Rebecca Peterson Abstract The Native American boarding schools of the 1800’s and early 1900’s left a crater in Native American societies. Under the pretense of helping devastated Indian Nations, boarding schools created places of assimilation, forcing children to attend and sometimes resorting to what would now be called kidnapping. Many of these children died from homesickness, working accidents, uncontrolled diseases and ill-planned escape attempts. The schools were abolished in the 1940’s, but the damage had been done. Language, culture, and religion were among the absent when the children returned home. One of the most important of the missing was the parenting skills that were honed over the years by the Native American elders, leaving these children lost because they were raised by complete strangers in historical boarding schools. In the Lakota language, the word for child is “Wikanyeja,” composed from two words, “wakanyan” or sacred and “najin” to stand. “For us a child stands sacred in this world, a special gift from the Creator.”1 The Apache tribe believed that children were a gift from the spirit world to prolong and give new growth to this world2; they were considered intelligent beings from the day they were born and were treated as such. Many Native American children were taught in the oral tradition with stories and reenactments, they were taught how to work by watching others and picking up the skills when they were ready.
