Overseas Expert Column by Bill Esdaile This G2 prize over 2,500m looks a good opportunity for RAABIHAH to end a frustrating sequence of seconds. She has been running well this season without managing to get her head in front where it matters. Jean-Claude Rouget’s filly has finished runner-up in all three starts this year, but they have been over shorter distances and she showed last season that she stays at least 2,400m in hot races. Her second behind top-class TARNAWA in the G1 Prix Vermeille at ParisLongchamp was an excellent effort and she bettered it when fifth behind SOTTSASS in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October. That form makes her the one to beat. JOIE DE SOIR looks a smart prospect. She made a winning debut over 1,900m at Deauville last December and it was no disgrace to be beaten by race-fit LA PARENCE on her return from a seven-month break over 2,000m at Compiegne. That race had clearly sharpened her up as she won a Clairefontaine Listed race over 2,400m in good style three weeks ago. Andre Fabre’s filly could be heading for G1 races and the step up to 2,500m should suit her. MYSTERY ANGEL brings Classic form into this G2. She finished runner-up behind top filly SNOWFALL in the G1 Oaks Stakes at Epsom over 2,405m in June. Although she was beaten 16 lengths, it was still a good effort and she put in another sound run when third behind PENJA in the G3 Prix de Psyche over 2,000m at Deauville earlier in the month. The drop in distance didn’t help that day so this return to 2,500m should help George Boughey’s British raider. VALIA took a while to get on top when a narrow winner of a ParisLongchamp G2 over 2,800m on soft ground last month. That wasn’t a severe test of stamina for the distance, and she did well to head SKAZINO on the line as she is a strong stayer. This drop to 2,500m does her no favours but she is smart. KATARA stepped up on her disappointing return to action over 2,398m at Goodwood in April when swooping late to land a Listed prize over 2,405m at Pontefract in June. British trainer Sir Michael Stoute’s filly has plenty of gears and is still improving. SELECTIONS: 4. RAABIHAH, 5. JOIE DE SOIR, 6. MYSTERY ANGEL & 1. Zabeel Mile, jockey competition conclude Carnival By Michele MacDonald Full Stride Communications With horses from all over the world scrambling for their last chance to collect an invitation to the Dubai World Cup (G1) program on March 27, Friday’s seven contentious Thoroughbred races with full fields guarantee a dramatic end to the 2010 Dubai International Racing Carnival at Meydan Racecourse. Adding even more zest to the occasion is the “Meydan Masters” international jockey competition in which Americans Kent Desormeaux and Aaron Gryder, who has been riding recently in Hong Kong, will pit their skills against colleagues from Japan, Australia, Europe and the United Arab Emirates in a four-race battle. In the grand finale to Friday’s program and the Carnival, a dozen runners are poised to compete for the trophy in the $250,000 Zabeel Mile (G2) on turf. Godolphin’s Group 1 winner Rio de La Plata will try to reclaim his best form in his first start of the year and South African and English group stakes winner Imbongi is seeking a win after his unlucky nose loss in the Al Fahidi Fort (G2) on February 19. Rio de La Plata, a five-year-old son of Rahy bred in Kentucky, won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere Grand Criterium (G1) as a two-year-old in France and finished second in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French Two Thousand Guineas) (G1) the following spring. While clearly possessing class, he has not won in six starts since his juvenile season. Frankie Dettori rides Rio de La Plata from the rail post.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2019 BRICKS AND MORTAR HANDLE FIGURES SHOW REVAMPED SARATOGA DATES WORKING MEETS TITLE-DEFENDING News Analysis, by Bill Finley When NYRA reached the halfway point of its 2019 Saratoga STABLEMATE IN MILLION meet Wednesday, all-sources handle was $320,684,714, or 2.3% higher than the number posted after the 20th racing day a year earlier. While that may seem like only a minor increase in handle, the number is more impressive than it may look on paper. For several reasons, comparing Saratoga 2019 vs. 2018 is like comparing pineapples to watermelons, but there is a key factor involved in those numbers that tells you just how well NYRA has broken out of the gate. Due to the heat, NYRA lost an entire Saturday card July 20. Saturday cards at Saratoga in July normally handle in the $23-million range. AKOYA - Ten time winner from seventeen. Landed a Group I at Deauville in his most recent start last month 2. AL SHAMOOS - Won a Group I at Abu Dhabi in November last year. Not as effective this season but remains hard to rule out 3. GENERAL LADY - Very smart performer at home in Poland but was well beaten in sole start on French soil Summary Only three runners for a 100 000 Euros race !!! (2) AL SHAMOOS has not yet been as good this season as she was last year. However, she finds here a great spot to return to the winners enclosure. The obvious threat to the selection is (1) AKOYA who comes in on the back of a Group I success at Deauville. (3) GENERAL LADY is unlikely to be involved for success. Selections (2) AL SHAMOOS - (1) AKOYA - (3) GENERAL LADY Race 2 1. WAY TO PARIS - Registered a career-best effort when winning the Group II Prix Maurice de Nieuil over 14f at ParisLongchamp mid-July 2. WALDGEIST - Won this race last year. Scored easily in the Prix Ganay before two solid efforts at Ascot in July. Big expectations 3. KISEKI - Top-class performer in Japan whose victories include The 2017 Japanese Saint-Leger. Big player 4. SILVERWAVE - Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner back in 2016. Won a Listed race this year Summary It looks like a two horse race ! (2) WALDGEIST and (3) KISEKI have the same official rating but Andre Fabre's horse seems as good as ever this year and plays at home.

Jockey Club Gold Cup Headlines Final Challenge Season Races A journey that began last December in Buenos Aires ends in Elmont, N.Y. this weekend, as the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series comes to a close with five “Win and You’re In” automatic qualifiers at Belmont Park. Highlighted by The Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), which will award the eighth automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), Belmont brings to a close a series that, all told, awarded 81 automatic starting berths into racing’s World Championships scheduled for Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland in Lexington, KY. The Gold Cup anchors a banner Saturday card that also features a trio of Grade 1 races that are “Win and You’re In” automatic qualifiers: the Flower Bowl, which will award a starting berth into the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1); Champagne, TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) and Frizette, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). The Gold Cup, at 1 ¼ miles, will be led by Juddmonte Farms’ homebred TACITUS, who figures to be a strong favorite in a five-horse field.
