GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3119 TO BE ANSWERED ON MARCH 16, 2016 HONOUR TO RESIDENT WELFARE ASSOCIATIONS No. 3119 SHRI ANANDRAO ADSUL: SHRI DHARMENDRA YADAV: Will the Minister of URBAN DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government proposes to honour Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in the country for cleanliness and if so, the details thereof; (b) whether the Government also proposes to educate residents and welfare societies about proper waste management, waste segregation and efficient waste processing and if so, the details thereof; (c) whether the Government has requested the RWAs/association to send their nominations for successful solid waste management techniques under the Swachh Bharat Mission; (d) if so, whether the Union Government has received nominations in this regard; and (e) if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT (SHRI BABUL SUPRIYO) (a) to (e): During 16th – 31st December 2015, the focus of the thematic cleanliness drives was RWAs and housing societies. As part of this, awareness drives were held among Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) residents in cities to educate them on solid waste management techniques such as household level segregation CONT…. -2 of waste, etc. Municipal Corporations and state directorates were asked to nominate and send names of proactive RWAs in their states / cities who had been doing good work in the area of sanitation and solid waste management to the Ministry of Urban Development. From the list of RWAs nominated by the Municipal Corporations and State Directorates, 32 proactive RWAs were identified (based on feedback from the cities and states) and their work acknowledged publicly by the Government through a newspaper advertisement in leading newspapers.
