True Spies Episode 45 - the Profiler
True Spies Episode 45 - The Profiler NARRATOR Welcome ... to True Spies. Week by week, mission by mission, you’ll hear the true stories behind the world’s greatest espionage operations. You’ll meet the people who navigate this secret world. What do they know? What are their skills? And what would YOU do in their position? This is True Spies. NARRATOR CLEMENTE: With any equivocal death investigation, you have no idea where the investigation is going to take you, but in this particular investigation, it starts at the White House. That makes it incredibly difficult to conduct an investigation, when you know that two of the people that are intimately involved in it are the First Lady and the President of the United States. NARRATOR This is True Spies, Episode 45, The Profiler. This story begins with an ending. CLEMENTE: On the evening of January 20th, 1993, Vince Foster was found dead of by gunshot wound at the top of an earthen berm in Fort Marcy Park. NARRATOR A life cut short in a picturesque, wooded park 10 minutes outside of the US capital. He was found by someone walking through the park who then called the US park police. The park police and EMTs responded to the scene and the coroner then arrived and pronounced Foster dead. And his body was removed. NARRATOR A body, anonymous – housed in an expensive woolen suit, a crisp white dress shirt. A vivid bloodstain on the right shoulder. When they then searched his car that was in the parking lot they found a pass to the White House. -

1st International Workshop on Entity-Oriented Search (EOS) Balog, K., de Vries, A.P., Serdyukov, P., Wen, J-R. Proceedings of the ACM SIGIR Workshop “Entity-Oriented Search (EOS)” held in conjunction with the 34th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference 28 July 2011, Beijing, China ISBN: 978-94-6186-000-2 TU Delft, The Netherlands contact: [email protected], [email protected] workshop url: http://research.microsoft.com/sigir-entitysearch/ Preface Both commercial systems and the research community are displaying an increased interest in returning “objects,” “entities,” or their properties in response to a users query. While major search engines are capable of recognizing specific types of objects (e.g., locations, events, celebrities), true entity search still has a long way to go. Entity retrieval is challenging as “objects,” unlike documents, are not directly represented and need to be identified and recognized in the mixed space of structured and unstructured Web data. While standard document retrieval methods applied to textual representations of entities do seem to provide reasonable performance, a big open question remains how much influence the entity type should have on the ranking algorithms developed. This ACM SIGIR Workshop on Entity-Oriented Search (EOS) seeks to uncover the next research frontiers in entity-oriented search. It aims to provide a forum to discuss entity- oriented search, without restriction to any particular data collection, entity type, or user task. The program committee accepted 11 papers (6 selected for full and 5 selected for short oral presentation) on a wide range of topics, such as learning-to-rank based entity finding and summarization, entity relations mining, spatio-temporal entity search, entity-search in structured web data, and evaluation of entity-oriented search. -

9/28/2016 Arkansas Connections: A Timeline of the Clinton Years by Sam Smith CLINTON EMAIL INDEX UNDERNEWS ARCHIVES US Arkansas Connections A CHART THAT APPEARED IN THE PROGRESSIVE REVIEW, MAY 1992 The media tried to turn the Clinton story into Camelot II. Just the truth would have made life easier for all of us. And a much better tale as well. Sam Smith COPYRIGHT 1998 THE PROGRESSIVE REVIEW Updated January 2001 and periodically thereafter http://prorev.com/connex.htm 1/47 9/28/2016 Arkansas Connections: A Timeline of the Clinton Years by Sam Smith 1950s When Bill Clinton is 7, his family moves from Hope, Arkansas, to the longtime mob resort of Hot Springs, AR. Here Al Capone is said to have had permanent rights to suite 443 of the Arlington Hotel. Clinton's stepfather is a gun brandishing alcoholic who loses his Buick franchise through mismanagement and his own pilfering. He physically abuses his family, including the young Bill. His mother is a heavy gambler with mob ties. According to FBI and local police officials, his Uncle Raymond to whom young Bill turns for wisdom and support is a colorful car dealer, slot machine owner and gambling operator, who thrives (except when his house is firebombed) on the fault line of criminality. Paul Bosson, Hot Springs Prosecutor In Hot Springs, growing up here, you were living a lie. You lived a lie because you knew that all of these activities were illegal. I mean, as soon as you got old enough to be able to read a newspaper, you knew that gambling in Arkansas was illegal, prostitution was illegal. -

PARADISE LOST: THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION AND THE EROSION OF EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE JONATHAN TuRLEY* INTRODUCTION In Paradise Lost, Milton once described a "Serbonian Bog ... [w]here Armies whole have sunk."' This illusion could have easily been taken from the immediate aftermath of the Clinton crisis. On a myriad of different fronts, the Clinton defense teams advanced sweep- ing executive privilege arguments, only to be defeated in a series of judicial opinions. This "Serbonian Bog" ultimately proved to be the greatest factor in undoing efforts to combat inquiries into the Presi- dent's conduct in the Lewinsky affair and the collateral scandals.2 More importantly, it proved to be the undoing of years of effort to protect executive privilege from risky assertions or judicial tests.' The Vince Foster Case
THE VINCE FOSTER CASE http://www.prorev.com/foster.htm P R O G R E S S I V E R E V I E W INDEX UNDERNEWS MAIL US 101 Peculiarities Surrounding the Death of Vincent Foster Richard L. Franklin Please bear in mind that the purpose of this catalog is rather modest. I merely want to highlight what I see as a large number of gross "peculiarities" surrounding the Foster case. I hope to convey to the reader some sense of the sheer weight of over 100 discrepancies and unanswered questions. Also bear in mind that the number "101" is itself a modest number. As a practical matter, I was forced to omit dozens of striking anomalies. As you read this long list, consider that Vince Foster's death was almost immediately labeled a suicide by the U.S. Park Police. Normal procedure in the case of a violent death is to treat it as a homicide until all doubts are resolved. Despite this, a homicide investigation was never launched. Even before the death scene or the body had been inspected, a suicide confirmation process was under way. In her sworn Senate testimony, senior Park Police officer Cheryl Braun said, "We made that determination [of suicide] prior to going up and looking at the body." From that point on, all police and FBI efforts were directed toward collecting evidence that would support the suicide verdict. No effort has ever been made to seek or collect evidence supporting a possible homicide. Instead of seeing a proper homicide investigation, we have seen Foster's death become mired in a morass of lies, confusion, and conflicting evidence. -
