  • Punks Don't Know Jack
Punks Don’t Know Jack This split CD from Cretin Records comes out of the gates with no holds barred punk rock. Defecation Area open the CD swinging with “Generation D.U.M.B.,” which while essentially generic 77’s punk does sound big. They remind me a little of ’90s NYC punks L.E.S. Stitches, who were one damn good band. The most off-putting thing to me about this track is that I’m really sick of punk rockers singing about how everything is dumb. They’re dumb or everyone else but them is dumb. Either way, songs about being dumb are stupid. I know, The Ramones did it with “Pinhead,” but guess what….you are not The Ramones. Defecation Area definitely hit big on the scorching “Slam Dance is Savage” and channel the Beach Boys via Social Distortion on “She Just Wanna Dance.” Defecation Area may mine ground that has been well traveled from the Dead Boys and 2 billion bands since, but they do it better than most! It’s good to see some studio recording finally making their way out for Tony Jones and The Cretin 3. They kick off their half of the disc with “Lady Frankenstein,” which has a strong Cramps undertone. The Cretin 3 essentially merge rockabilly and punk together and sprinkle some horror rock sensibility lyrically. “Bathroom Floor” really isn’t my bag. It doesn’t really rock and is too repetitive and the vocals kind of give me a migraine. Better is “Leather,” which borrows the guitar riff from Cheap Trick’s “He’s a Whore” and uses it to create a catching little ditty.

  • 2017 High Sierra Music Festival Program
WELCOME! Festivarians, music lovers, friends old and new... WELCOME to the 27th version of our annual get-together! This year, we can’t help but look back 50 years to the Summer of Love, the summer of 1967, a year that brought us the Monterey Pop Festival (with such performers as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead) which became an inspiration and template for future music festivals like the one you find yourself at right now. But the hippies of that era would likely refer to what’s going on in the political climate of these United States now as a “bad trip” with the old adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” coming back into play. Here we are in 2017 with so many of the rights and freedoms that were fought long and hard for over the past 50 years being challenged, reinterpreted or revoked seemingly at warp speed. It’s high time to embrace the two basic tenets of the counterculture movement. First is PEACE. PEACE for your fellow human, PEACE within and PEACE for our planet. The second tenet brings a song to mind - and while the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band gets all the attention on its 50th anniversary, it’s the final track on their Magical Mystery Tour album (which came out later the same year) that contains the most apropos song for these times. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. LOVE more, fear less. LOVE is always our answer. Come back to LOVE.

The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.

  • RF Applications in Digital Signal Processing
RF applications in digital signal processing T. Schilcher Paul Scherrer Institut, Villigen, Switzerland Abstract Ever higher demands for stability, accuracy, reproducibility, and monitoring capability are being placed on Low-Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) systems of particle accelerators. Meanwhile, continuing rapid advances in digital sig- nal processing technology are being exploited to meet these demands, thus leading to development of digital LLRF systems. The first part of this course will begin by focusing on some of the important building-blocks of RF sig- nal processing including mixer theory and down-conversion, I/Q (amplitude and phase) detection, digital down-conversion (DDC) and decimation, con- cluding with a survey of I/Q modulators. The second part of the course will introduce basic concepts of feedback systems, including examples of digital cavity field and phase control, followed by radial loop architectures. Adaptive feed-forward systems used for the suppression of repetitive beam disturbances will be examined. Finally, applications and principles of system identification approaches will be summarized. 1 Introduction In this lecture we shall examine various aspects of Low-Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) systems for particle accelerators. These LLRF systems typically collect measurements of amplitude, phase, and frequency, perform various signal processing and computational processes on that data, and then use the outcome to monitor, control, and regulate RF fields in particle accelerators. The LLRF applications can be classified into monitoring, feedback, and feed-forward systems. The range of typical RF frequencies in particle accelerators varies widely starting from a few MHz (e.g., in ion accelerators) and going up to tens of GHz (e.g., high-gradient acceleration structures operating at 30 GHz).
