Light Art Artists and Curators Meet at former San Carporofo Church in

The event, curated by Gisella Gellini and Domenico Nicolamarino, will pay homage to Marinellia Pirelli, a Light's artist

Light Art Ensemble 2014

Light Art as feature that interacts with architecture and urban landscape, for creating new visual atmospheres, for allowing new ways of enjoying either an outdoor or an indoor space of a city, for conveying cultural messages and contents. That's, in short, the concept of Light Art Ensemble, an occasion for confrontation and debate among Art and Culture experts with a group or artists that will embody that concept in their works. The latter will be set up from 12 to 14 of December in the evocative location of the former San Carpoforo church in Via Formentini, in the hearth of the Brera neighbour, within short distance from the Brera Fine Arts and Pinacoteca (Art Gallery). The event will pay homage to Marinellia Pirelli, the great pioneer artist of Light Art who left us in 2009. For the event a number of her Meteore will be exhibited. San Carpoforo is a deconsecrated church of which the first information date back to the 831 year, albeit of the ancient building there is nothing left since it was rebuilt from scratch in the XVII century, after many refurbishments. Belonging to the Milan's Municipality, from 1993 is at free disposal of the Brera Academy for its courses, but it can also be rented as location for high level cultural or trade events. Curated by Domenico Nicolamarino, Lighting teacher at the Brera Academy, with Gisella Gellini, who holds a Light Art and Light Design course at the Milan's Polytechnic' School of Design, Light Art Ensemble will gather artists such asNino Alfieri, Carlo Bernardini, Marco Brianza, Paolo Calafiore, Giulio De Mitri, Nicola Evangelisti, Maria Cristiana Fioretti, Pietro Pirelli, Sebastiano Romano, Donatella Schilirò, Paolo Scirpa. In addition, a number of works by the same artist will create in the neighborhood a urban path from the Academy to the San Carpoforo church. In addition, Light Art Ensemble will be also an artistic happening, with two performances due to liven up saturday and sunday in the late afternoon. At the event will take part Prof. Franco Marocco, Director of the Brera Academy, who, together with Sandrina Bandera, Supervisor and Director of the , and Arturo Dell'Acqua Bellavitis, Dean of the Milan's Polytechnic School of Design, opens the meeting on Friday 12 of December. Afterwards, the two curators, Domenico Nicolamarino and Gisella Gellini, will talk about their experience in the field of Light Art, with the co‐operation of Clara Lovisetti, a journalist that since few years is working with Gisella Gellini at the Light Art in Italy series of book, a publication now at its sixth edition that each year offers a review of the temporary Light Art installations in Italy, including also works made by the exhibiting artists. The morning will go on with the lecture From material to immateriality, from the symbolic depiction of light to its real showing by Giulio De Mitri as teacher at the Catanzaro Fine Arts Academy, followed by Roberto Lacarbonara who will talk about Light's Aesthetics. The experience of ICASTICA (an international cultural event held in Arezzo) is the topics dealt by Pasquale Giuseppe Macrì, Culture and Entertainment Activities Councillor of Arezzo, while Fabio Migliorati, artistic director of ICASTICA, will talk about Arezzo on Light. In the afternoon Gisella Gellini will start with an in‐depth presentation of the artistic path of Marinellia Pirelli. It will be followed by the lecture of Massimo Bignardi, Director of the Postgraduate School in Artistc and Historical Assets of the Siena University, about Light as material of the form. Then Carlo Bernardini and Paolo Scirpa* will inaugurate the series of the meetings with the artists. To these meetings will be devoted the whole day of Saturday 13 of December, when in the morning will illustrate their works Marco Brianza, Nino Alfieri, Maria Cristiana Fioretti. In afternoon the schedule goes on with Nicola Evangelisti, Donatella Schilirò, Sebastiano Romano, Giulio De Mitri, Paolo Calafiore. At 6 p.m. Pietro Pirelli will be showing his Suonare l'acqua, suonare la luce (Play the water, play the light) work with a short performance. Sunday the 14 of December the artists will be at disposal for one‐to‐one meetings. Light Art Ensemble will be closed at 4 p.m. Prof. Antonello Pelliccia, Director of the Artistic Design School for the Business of the Brera Academy, together with the teachers Antonio Ciurleo and Gabriele Perretta, will talk about Light Art within that School. Then at 5 p.m. will take place the Live the Light performance by Michele Mastroianni Ensemble, featuring the dancers Pierluigi Castellini and Barbara Novati and involving the exhibited works.

The setting up The nave of the former San Carpoforo church will be housing twelve works, that are due to exemplify different implementations of light, including innovative light sources such as LEDs and optic fibres, but also traditional ones. At the entrance, a video made by Domenico Nicolamarino will introduce the topics of the exhibition with images of the works of the involved artists, while each installations will be accompanied by another video that explains their concept in a more detailed way. The lecture area will be located in front of the absyde, at the hearth of the exhibition, in order to offer an encompassing view of almost all the exhibited works. Outside the Church, a number of works of the involved artists will be located in strategical locations along the path from the Brera Academy to the San Carpoforo church.
