Two jewels of gothic architecture stand nearby – the churches of Santa Maria del Carmine and San Marco. But the district also has an alluring outdoor quality that inspires you to stroll along its narrow streets, passing by many restaurants with outdoor seating, refined and unique fashion boutiques, antique shops, and stores specialized in the fine arts, discovering a host of delightful hidden corners. Via Brera is lined with elegant 18th-century noble palazzi. One of them will soon become an extension for the Pinacoteca, which is always looking for new spaces to host temporary exhibitions and offer even mores services to the public. Already incorporated into the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, the brick apse of the deconsecrated church of San Carpoforo stands directly opposite the Pinacoteca entrance. The church hosts exhibitions and performances by Academy students. You may also treat yourself to a soothing pause in the small but delightful Botanical Garden, with access via Palazzo Brera or from Via Fratelli Gabba. Dating to the 18th century, the garden was reopened to the public a few years ago and offers a delightfully peaceful setting within Milan’s densely urbanized historical centre. It also offers a view of the metallic dome of the coeval Observatory, which contains a collection of historical scientific instruments. Magnificent Palazzo Brera is clearly the district’s centre of gravity. Its majestic brick and stonework have changed little since the 17th-18th century, when it housed a Jesuit college and was one of the city’s foremost pieces of civilian architecture. The stately entrance portal with its columns is the work of Giuseppe Piermarini, the architect who designed Teatro alla Scala and Palazzo Reale. _II 1_ Sesto San Giovann FSi Cormano I T S E T PARCO NORD SESTO SAN GIOVANNI BRESSO O Cormano Brusuglio I Sesto Rondò ANGENZIALE NORD T LV U F E L A I V RHO Comasina Bruzzano NOVATE Bignami 500 m TORINO MILANO A8 MILANO LA A4 500 m Sesto Marelli A Rho A.V./S.F.R. Light Art Ensemble 12 ‐ 13 ‐ 14 December, 2014 Light Art Artists and Curators Meet at former San Carporofo Church in Milan The event, curated by Gisella Gellini and Domenico Nicolamarino, will pay homage to Marinellia Pirelli, a Light's artist Light Art Ensemble 2014 Light Art as feature that interacts with architecture and urban landscape, for creating new visual atmospheres, for allowing new ways of enjoying either an outdoor or an indoor space of a city, for conveying cultural messages and contents. That's, in short, the concept of Light Art Ensemble, an occasion for confrontation and debate among Art and Culture experts with a group or artists that will embody that concept in their works. The latter will be set up from 12 to 14 of December in the evocative location of the former San Carpoforo church in Via Formentini, in the hearth of the Brera neighbour, within short distance from the Brera Fine Arts Academy and Pinacoteca (Art Gallery). The event will pay homage to Marinellia Pirelli, the great pioneer artist of Light Art who left us in 2009. For the event a number of her Meteore will be exhibited. San Carpoforo is a deconsecrated church of which the first information date back to the 831 year, albeit of the ancient building there is nothing left since it was rebuilt from scratch in the XVII century, after many refurbishments. Belonging to the Milan's Municipality, from 1993 is at free disposal of the Brera Academy for its courses, but it can also be rented as location for high level cultural or trade events.

November 2009 PERSONAL GUIDES POWERED BY traveldk.com 1 Top 10 Attractions Milan and the Lakes Travel Guide Leonardo’s Last Supper The Last Supper , Leonardo da Vinci’s 1495–7 masterpiece, is a touchstone of Renaissance painting. Since the day it was finished, art students have journeyed to Milan to view the work, which takes up a refectory wall in a Dominican convent next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The 20th-century writer Aldous Huxley called it “the saddest work of art in the world”: he was referring not to the impact of the scene – the moment when Christ tells his disciples “one of you will betray me” – but to the fresco’s state of deterioration.
