“I’d already heard that the Turku Capital of Cul- ture year was off to a great start, but now that I’ve visited Turku, I’m truly impressed by what I’ve seen. I believe that the year will have long-last- ing eff ects on the entire city and region.” These encouraging words were spoken by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, when he visited Turku in early March. I fi nd it easy to agree with him. We’re doing great! Ma ila has performed key soprano roles at major opera houses worldwide and she makes regular guest appearances at e.g. the in New York. In 2010 in Lyon, Ma ila performed the world premiere of the monologue opera Émilie, an opera composed by and dedicated specifi cally to Ma ila.

She received a Grammy for the Best Opera Recording in 1998 and 2004 and she has had two gold and three platinum albums.

Ma ila has received numerous awards and recognition including the BBC’s Singer of the World in 1983, the Finland Prize in 1996, the Pro Finlandia Medal in 2001, the French cultural recognition Ordre des Arts et des Le res in 2003, as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Turku in 2011.
