PG 02:04:2 STARFLEET TECHNIICAL ORDER AUTHENTICATED STARDATE 7712.00 FOREWORD At Last! The second volume! It’s been an interesting piece of working getting this set together, since it focuses on a lot of the ‘lesser’ craft found within the Star Trek universe. Though many won’t find a freighter or repair pod all that ‘sexy’ compared to the warships, these ships do much more to flesh out the Federation’s fleet, show- ing how it works, and how it stays together. I would like to thank the many people who have offered their con- tinued support for these projects, primarily those who have volun- teered their designs and offered suggestions on what to put in (and what to leave out) in this and future volumes. Star Trek wouldn’t have lasted beyond 1969 if it weren’t for creative fans like these. • December Is Already Here, and with It Come Not Only Frigid Temperatures and Snow Covered Landscapes in Many Parts of the Earth but Also a String of Holidays
1 From the Editor Greetings everyone! December is already here, and with it come not only frigid temperatures and snow covered landscapes in many parts of the Earth but also a string of holidays. Of course, with holidays comes shopping, be that for food or gifts. And, no one can deny that the newest innovations in high-tech gadgetry are usually in high demand with gift shoppers. With that in mind, I couldn't help but think of the enormous market that the gaming industry has in connection with electronics and technology. That fact, in turn, led me to the conclusion that "Gaming" would be a logical focus of this months issue. Since it's a huge field, I decided to keep it strictly aimed at Star Trek games, including video games, simming, and of course Star Trek Online. All contributors have done an excellent job again! It always amazes me how quickly the pages fill up once I start putting the dozens of items I receive into them. You might note that there are several small contributions. For example, I had asked several people that hadn't even thought of contributing before to write up short parts about their favorite games. And look how wonderful that came together! It just illustrates that contributions don't have to be massive to be in the PADD. So, please don't ever think you must be willing to write long articles to be a contributor for the PADD. Unfortunately, we're missing the Photoshop Tutorial and the Cookbook this month due to circumstances beyond my control.

1 2 Supplementary Material: 3 Theme Enrichment Analysis: A Statistical Test for 4 Identifying Significantly Enriched Themes in a List of 5 Stories with an Application to the Star Trek 6 Television Franchise 1 Supplementary Material SUPPLEMENTARY NOTE 1 7 Star Trek has long been an important part of American popular culture 1, and remains popular among 8 sci-fi enthusiasts the world over 2. Those acquainted with the Star Trek science fiction media franchise will 9 know that in the main it comprises seven television series and thirteen feature films 3. Figure S1 shows 10 an overview. The first series, which is known as Star Trek: The Original Series (or simply TOS), began 11 airing in 1966 and ran for 80 mostly delightful episodes. It depicts the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk 12 and his crew aboard the starship Enterprise on a five-year mission to explore the galaxy. The mission was 13 temporarily suspended three years in when the show was cancelled in 1969 on account of poor ratings. 14 But the Enterprise crew saw their mission through to completion in Star Trek: The Animated Series (TAS), 15 which ran from 1973 to 1974 in two seasons consisting of 22 somewhat less delightful episodes. Six 16 feature films following the TOS/TAS cast on subsequent adventures were released in the years from 1979 17 to 1991. From TOS was spawned the spin-off television series Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) 18 which ran from 1987 to 1994 in seven seasons consisting of 178 episodes. It is set a generation or so 19 after Captain Kirk’s five-year mission.
