  • Yakov Freidman Felt the Skids to the Bell Helicopter Touch
22800 1 Summer Olympic Games, Munich, Germany September 5, 1972 akov Freidman felt the skids to the Bell helicopter touch down, Yand knew they had reached the first leg of their destination. Next stop: Cairo. Seeing only darkness behind the blindfold cinched to his head, he rubbed the leg of the Israeli athlete next to him, using the rope around his wrists to make contact. A small effort at solidarity. A reassurance that everything was going to turn out okay. That they would all be released alive from the maniacal Palestinian terrorists that had captured them. He didn’t believe it. And neither did the man he rubbed. The Pales- tinians had already killed enough people to prove that wouldn’t happen. The engine whine began to decrease, the shuddering of the frame growing still. He heard the terrorist in the hold with them shout at the German pilots, screaming in English to keep their hands in sight. He only assumed the pilots had, because the shouting stopped. He sat in silence for an eternity, waiting, straining his ears to hear something. Anything to indicate what was transpiring. He hunched his shoulders and rubbed the knot of the blindfold on his back, causing it to shift a millimeter. Enough to let in a sliver of light and a small piece of vision. 9780525953982_DaysOfRage_TX.indd 1 3/7/14 10:58 AM 22800 2 ⁄ BRAD TAYLOR He saw two of the terrorists walking to an unlit Boeing 727, parked off to the edge of whatever airfield they had landed within. They went up the stairs, took one look inside, then began running back down.

  • Modern Optical Retailing Strategies: Anti-Reflective and Mirror Lenses
Modern Optical Retailing Strategies: Anti-Reflective and Mirror Lenses INTRODUCTION Success in today’s highly competitive eyewear retailing market requires new tools and strategies. This paper presents one such opportunity that up until recently has been unavailable to in-store retail labs and small-to-midsize optical labs — the ability to produce quality anti-reflective (AR) lenses and mirrored sun lenses in-house.And by doing so, significantly increase profitability and customer satisfaction. This ability has been made possible by the introduction of smaller, in-house AR Coating Systems geared to the throughput, space and budget requirements of the in-office lab. These new compact systems are designed to deliver big performance in a small footprint and offer a simplified approach to providing anti-reflective and mirror coatings. The right coating system enables eyewear retailers and small optical labs to offer anti-reflective and mirror coatings like those produced by “big box” coating companies, at a fraction of the cost and time required for traditional coatings. OPPORTUNITY #1 - ANTI-REFLECTIVE LENSES It’s well known that the U.S. eyewear market lags far behind those of other developed countries in the percentage of eyeglasses sold with anti-reflective lenses. Finding out how selling more anti-reflective lenses improves the profitability of your How far? According to a report published by The Vision Council in March business is a pretty simple (and eye-opening) 2016, only 30.1% of eyeglass lenses sold in the U.S. include anti-reflective exercise: coating, compared with 64.4% in Canada. In Europe, AR lenses account for more than 64% of eyeglass lenses sold in Germany, 61.2% sold in Italy, 59.6% 1.

  • Erskine Falls: a Crime Fiction Novel and Exegesis
Erskine Falls: a Crime Fiction Novel and Exegesis By CHRISTOPHER MALLON Student ID No: 983478X Dissertation submitted as fulfilment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (Humanities) Swinburne University of Technology March 2020 Abstract This practice-led PhD consists of two elements – a crime fiction novel titled Erskine Falls, and an accompanying exegesis that critically situates the author’s creative practice and the production of the text. Drawing on the traditions of hardboiled detective fiction and noir crime fiction, the novel negotiates the spectrum between these two sub-genres and explores a world which questions the many modern articulations of masculinity. Erskine Falls is a contemporaneously-set novel that follows a private eye who investigates the case of a missing girl who is from the affluent resort town of Lorne, Victoria, Australia. As the private eye moves through Lorne’s world of seaside wealth and tourism, he is simultaneously coming to terms with the post-industrial changes in his own home town of Geelong and dealing with a tumultuous relationship with his deceased business partner’s wife. His investigation eventually leads him into an underground world of criminality that belies the smiling touristic face of Lorne. The exegesis reflexively explores key writerly choices and focuses on genre, masculinity, voice, and place. Building upon the hardboiled and noir crime fiction subgenres, the project seeks to examine how the traditional hardboiled voice and its masculinities are negotiated within a contemporary, post-industrial regional Australian space. Using a practice-led methodology, the exegesis reflexively aims to situate the novel in a contemporary world through the subgenres of hardboiled detective and noir crime fiction.

We were driving over from the little house we rented together near the beach in Santa Cruz. It was a Friday evening, mid-July, and several hours earlier, we'd finished our student-teaching responsibilities at a year-round elementary school in Watsonville that was surrounded by lettuce fields. As we snaked down out of Pacheco Pass, the wide sky over the valley floor was in ink wash. It was 1977, and we'd both just graduated from UC Santa Cruz. Tim was driving the truck we used for the little part time landscaping business we'd started during our sophomore year to help with expenses; my feet were up on the dash.

  • Reflections of a Moldy Oldie from Seniors Centerstage by Gail Blanton
Lillenas® Drama Presents Reflections of a Moldy Oldie from Seniors Centerstage By Gail Blanton Theme: Troubles, don’t dwell on them. Get interested in other people as a cure. Character: PETE Setting: Any Props: Reflecting sunglasses PETE (holds a pair of sunglasses with mirrored outer lenses as he talks): What was the mat- ter with me? I thought the whole world had turned into a crowd of sun wor- shipers. Not just beach bums, not just the ones that hang out at the lake or the pool. Everybody. Everywhere I went. Everybody wearing those reflecting sun- glasses. Everybody trying to be hot stuff in cool shades. Now there’s a para- dox for you. SAMPLEDO NOT PRINT Businessmen, kids, doctors, nurses, patients, babies, ball players, priests! All wearing those shiny, two-way mirror glasses. You try to talk to somebody wearing those things, and you know what you see, don’t you? Just yourself. And it’s almost like those lenses have a magnet in them. You almost have to look at yourself, you know? After all, this is you, and nobody cares about how you look like you do. And nobody sees what’s going on with you like you do. You see all your shortcomings, how tired you look, how old you are. You can count every trouble you have by those wrinkles. That worried face says you’re not the John Wayne hero who used to take on every challenger. That pale color shows you’re not as well as you once were. That stoop in your posture shows you’re not much good for anything anymore.

  • "O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU" by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen
"O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU" By Ethan Coen and Joel Coen BLACK In black, we hear a chain-gang chant, many voices together, spaced around the unison strike of picks against rock. A title burns in: O muse! Sing in me, and through me tell the story Of that man skilled in all the ways of contending... A wanderer, harried for years on end... On the sound of an impact we cut to: A PICK splitting a rock. As the chant continues, wider angles show the chain-gang at work. They are black men in bleached and faded stripes, chained together, working under a brutal midday sun. It is flat delta countryside; the straight-ruled road stretches to infinity. Mounted guards with shotguns lazily patrol the line. The chain-gang chant is regular and, it seems, timeless. We slowly fade out, returning to BLACK The last of the voices fades. After a long beat we hear the guitar introduction to Harry McClintock's 'The Big Rock Candy Mountain.' A WHEAT FIELD A road cuts across the middle background. Noonday sun beats down. We hear the distant picks and shovels of men at work and see, rising above ground level, the occasional upraised pick and spade heaving dirt. Men are digging a ditch alongside the road. After a long beat, three men pop up in the wheat field in the middle foreground. They wear faded stripes and grey duck- billed caps. They scurry abreast toward the camera, throwing an occasional glance back at the ditch-diggers. A clanking sound accompanies their run.
