Only Imagine
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE I CAN A Memoir ONLY IMAGINE Bart Millard a memoir With Robert Noland Bart Millard with robert noland Imagine_A.indd 7 10/3/17 10:11 AM Appendix 1 YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST My mentor, Rusty Kennedy, was integral in discipling me in my walk with Christ. He gave me these seventy- five verses and state- ments while I was unpacking my past and starting to understand who I truly am in Jesus. Ever since then, I have carried these close to my heart. I pray these will minister to you the way they have to me so that you, too, can understand that in Christ, you are free indeed! 1. John 1:12—I am a child of God. 2. John 15:1–5—I am a part of the true vine, a channel (branch) of His life. 3. John 15:15—I am Christ’s friend. 4. John 15:16—I am chosen and appointed by Christ to bear His fruit. 5. Acts 1:8—I am a personal witness of Christ for Christ. 6. Romans 3:24—I have been justified and redeemed. 7. Romans 5:1—I have been justified (completely forgiven and made righteous) and am at peace with God. 8. Romans 6:1–6—I died with Christ and died to the power of sin’s rule in my life. APPENDIX 1 9. Romans 6:7—I have been freed from sin’s power over me. 10. Romans 6:18—I am a slave of righteousness. 11. Romans 6:22—I am enslaved to God. -
CONCERNS in TYPOGRAPHY & CULTURE: a Case-Study Based on the Kotas of the Nilgiris INTRODUCTION Enveloped in Urban Settings
CONCERNS IN TYPOGRAPHY & CULTURE: A case-study based on the Kotas of the Nilgiris INTRODUCTION Enveloped in urban settings with languages and literacy being easily available to us, it is difficult for us to imagine that there do exist people, cultures and communities, who are still trying to figure ways of creating visual expressions to their verbal language! This paper introduces us to a script which was born in 2010 in the Neilgherries-The Kota script. In the middle of the vast Indian sub-continent amidst the glorious serenity of the south, lies the land of forgotten tribes who have made the high hills their abode since the past thousands of years. The convergence of the Western and Eastern ghats in an area which has been christened by the British as ‘Neilgherry’ provides these native tribes a home for their kind to flourish and prosper with all that the Nilgiri has to offer. These hills are the abode of some communities which live in perfect harmony with nature. But now, due to external factors such as globalization and urbanization they find themselves resisting the pressures of the outside world and are trying to preserve their ancient culture so that it does not fade with the onslaught of time. The CONTEXT of CULTURE Anthropologists conceived the modern concept of culture toward the end of the 19th century. The first really clear and comprehensive definition came from the British anthropologist Sir Edward Tylor. Writing in 1871, he defined culture as “that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” (Tylor 1871/1958,p.1). -

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Third Sunday after Pentecost The mustard seed becomes a great shrub that shelters the birds, recalling ancient images of the tree of life. We’d expect a cedar or a sequoia, but Jesus finds the power of God better imaged in a tiny, no-account seed. It’s not the way we expect divine activity to look. Yet the tree of life is here, in the cross around which we gather, the tree into which we are grafted through baptism, the true vine that nourishes us with its fruit in the cup we share. It may not appear all that impressive, but while nobody’s looking it grows with a power beyond our understanding. June 13, 2021 9:30 am WELCOME Your visit is a blessing to us, and we’re glad you’re here today! NEW HERE? As a visitor, please do not feel obligated to contribute an offering - you are our guest! Rather, please ask an usher for a Let’s Get Acquainted card and drop it in the offering plate. Restrooms are located on the same level as the sanctuary. Exit the back of the sanctuary, turn left into Parish House, turn left again at ramp and continue midway down hallway. Restrooms are on the right. PRAYER REQUESTS The importance of prayer is affirmed throughout the Bible. As a church we are committed to pray - your needs are important to us. Prayer request cards can be obtained from an usher and may be filled out and dropped in the offering plate. -

AN ETHNOMUSICOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON KANIYAN KOOTHU Aaron J. Paige This paper will analyze some of the strategies by which Kaniyans, a minority com- munity from the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu, use music as a vehicle to negoti- ate, reconcile, and understand social, cultural, and economic change. Kaniyan Koothu performances are generally commissioned for kodai festivals, during which Kaniyans sing lengthy ballads. These stories vary locally from village to village and recount the adventures, exploits, and virtues of gods and goddesses specific to the area and community in which they are worshipped. While these narratives are en- tertaining in their own right, they also serve as springboards for subjective compari- son and interpretation. Kaniyans thus, transform mythological legends into modern social commentary. In a world perceived to be growing increasingly complicated by globalization and modernization, these folk musicians openly voice in performance both their concern for the loss of traditional values and their trepidation that Tamil culture, tamizh panpaadu – particularly village culture, gramiya panpaadu – are gradually being displaced by foreign principles, products, and technologies. In con- tradistinction to this conservative rhetoric, the Kaniyans, in recent years, have made major reformations to their own musical practice. Using specific textual examples, the first part of this paper will look at the ways in which musicians’ semi-improvised narratives foster solidarity under the rubric of a shared Tamil language and cultural identity. The second part of this paper, by way of musical examples, will attempt to illuminate how these same musicians are engaged in redefining and reformulating their musical tradition through the appropriation and integration of rhythmic models characteristic of Carnatic drumming. -
