Race, Rights and Redemption in NYPD Blue BENBELLA BOOKS Dallas, Texas JEFFREY SCHALER Just One Sip for Sipowicz to Slip Like the New York background, Sipowicz’s alcoholism is a cen- tral, if not explicitly mentioned, aspect of NYPD Blue. Sipowicz is an alcoholic, and we all know what that means. Or do we? “Yee doe here but sippe of this cuppe, but then ye shall drinke up the dreggs of it for ever.” —JOHN PRESTON (Breastplate of Faith and Love) NDY SIPOWICZ, our lion-hearted, lily-livered, existential hero, is an “alcoholic.” Sipowicz is drunk in the very fi rst episode of Athe series and wrestles with his alcoholism throughout the en- tire run of the show. Sipowicz’s alcoholism has wrecked his marriage, destroyed most of his relationships and by the end of the fi rst episode is on the verge of ruining his career. Many people struggle with alcohol problems; these problems mani- fest themselves in many ways and are solved—or not—in an equally wide variety of ways. As an expert in the fi eld of addiction and drug policy, I’ve studied the various techniques problem drinkers use to ad- dress their drinking—and the effectiveness of these techniques. 1 Running head: THE LEVERAGE OF ALCOHOL ADDICTION The Leverage of Alcohol Addiction: A Textual Analysis of Leverage and the Limits of the Procedural Drama Thomas M. Gallagher Temple University 2 THE LEVERAGE OF ALCOHOL ADDICTION Abstract This paper confronts the question of whether messages can be diluted or even contradicted by the format in which they are delivered through a textual analysis of the TNT procedural drama Leverage, examining the portrayal of alcoholism in the program. The procedural drama, which often focuses on figures in law and order occupations, is characterized by close-ended episodes that often feature happy endings. Alcohol addiction has been a staple of many television programs, but these programs were mostly comedies or serial dramas. Leverage, a procedural drama with a light touch, is a modern day Robin Hood tale focused on five thieves led by an alcoholic protagonist. This paper finds that main character displays the expected negative effects of alcohol addiction but also displays positive qualities not often seen when the character is sober. The paper also examines the reactions of the protagonist’s closest colleagues to his addiction, and finds that these reactions, while prominent in the program’s first two seasons, are treated inconsistently in later seasons. The inconsistent treatment of this alcoholism in later seasons, the fantastical and often humorous nature of the program, and the procedural expectation of positive resolution to conflicts begun at the beginning of an episode often undercuts the program’s message about the dangers of alcoholism. This paper briefly contrasts the portrayal of substance abuse addiction in House, M.D., another program characterized by close-ended episodes and happy endings, with Leverage’s depiction of alcoholism. -

Lotz1 Abstract This article considers the ideological significance of homophobic discourse as part of a sophisticated interrogation of homophobic outlooks in the FX series Rescue Me. It posits that a variety of narrative features enable a strategy of “working through” in which characters’ frank conversations and evolving perspectives depict the process of experiencing ideological challenge. Working through emphasizes the need for scholars to fully explore the internally contradictory narratives that are characteristic of the increasing complexity of some television storytelling and defies norms of critical media analysis that argue particular media texts either reinforce or resist dominant ideology. Cogent examination of other instances of working through could reinvigorate stymied intellectual spaces by insisting that scholars consider characters’ process of struggle with ideological perspectives throughout the unfolding of a series. However, mass media can have a powerful influence on how people see teachers. The television series Breaking Bad (Gilligan, 2007-2013) and its representation of teachers, has contributed a unique – if warped -perspective on the subject of teachers and teaching in America. -

‘DAD’S HOME’ CAST BIOS DAVID JAMES ELLIOTT (Ben Westman) – Known for being the star of the hit legal series “JAG,” David James Elliott continues to be a versatile actor in both television and film. He appeared in the ABC miniseries “The Storm,” opposite Treat Williams and Teri Polo, and finished two feature films, “Rainbow Tribe” and “Gooby” last year. Before that, Elliott played a lead role in “Knights of Bloodsteel,” a miniseries that aired on SyFy in 2009. Other recent credits include the lead role of Alex Kinter in the miniseries “Impact!” for NBC and Jerry Bruckheimer’s hit CBS series “Close to Home.” This summer Elliott will star opposite Virginia Madsen in the ABC series “Scoundrels,” about a family of small town criminals whose mother decides it’s time the family should go straight when their father is sentenced to a long prison term. On “JAG,” Elliott captivated audiences for 10 years as navy lawyer Lt. Harmon Rabb, for which he won the 2000 TV Guide Award for Favorite Actor in a Dramatic Series, and was nominated by TV Guide for Actor of the Year in a Dramatic Series in 2001. Elliott, the second of three sons, was born in Toronto. After encouragement from a teacher in high school, he auditioned at one of the most prestigious acting schools in Canada, Ryerson Polytechnic Institute in Toronto. Soon after, Elliott caught the attention of the producers of the Canadian television show “Street Legal.” The producers took a chance on the untried actor, giving him the role of Nick Del Gado, an attractive love interest for the lead female lawyer. -

Er schaute auf die Uhr und entschied, dass es zu früh war, den Tag bereits zu beschließen, also nahm er noch die Bücher, die sich in der letzten Zeit bei ihm angesammelt hatten und brachte sie zurück zur Bücherei. Anschließend sortierte er noch die bearbeiteten Akten ab und nahm dann gegen 1600 seine Tasche um das Gebäude zu verlassen. Er konnte sich nicht helfen, er traute der Ruhe nicht, es war wie die berühmte Ruhe vor dem Sturm... Am nächsten Morgen bearbeitete er gerade die Post, die Harriet ihm gebracht hatte, als Tiner an seinen Türrahmen klopfte. „Ja, Tiner?“ „Der Admiral will Sie sprechen, Sir.“ „Ich bin unterwegs“ sagte Harm und stand auf. Jane Gibb and Roger Sabin | 29 May 2009 | 4-The Wire Files [May 09] Notes towards placing The Wire’s depiction of African-Americans in the context of American TV crime drama Critics have justifiably praised The Wire for its rounded African-American characters, and the risks it took in foregrounding ‘black Baltimore’ - risks that have harmed its ratings, according to its makers.1 They have concluded that the crime genre has been taken somewhere new. But how new is ‘new’? What the critics couldn’t do - weren’t tasked to do - was to contextualise the show in terms of the history of crime drama on TV. This article will therefore seek to survey a number of key shows from the past that purported to convey a liberal viewpoint, and which have made race a focus. This is in order to suggest ways in which The Wire might be part of a genre tradition - and equally how it might be seen as expanding the parameters of that tradition and saying something genuinely original. -
