Abeytia iii Case 99: The Literary Lady By Ernest J. Abeytia ABSTRACT This is a crime fiction novel. It is a confluence of the styles, settings, plot lines, and character development of such luminaries of detective storytelling as Raymond Chandler, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Elmore Leonard, but it is not a hard copy or “cover” of anything they wrote. Bob Derby is a homicide detective in the Gardena, California police department. Gardena is one of 88 cities or towns in the County of Los Angeles. He has made an arrest in, or “cleared,” 98 of 101 homicide cases as the story begins, but he has never actually solved any of them. Somebody else always beats him to it and he then applies the police procedure that closes the case. The murder of Emma Williams is to be no different. iv Table of Contents Critical Introduction ........................................................................................................ vi Bibliography ................................................................................................................... xix Case 99: The Literary Lady ................................................................................................1 v Case 99: The Literary Lady By Ernest J. • What Would Sipowicz Do? Race, Rights and Redemption in NYPD Blue
E D I T E D BY GLENN YEFFETH What Would Sipowicz Do? Race, Rights and Redemption in NYPD Blue BENBELLA BOOKS Dallas, Texas JEFFREY SCHALER Just One Sip for Sipowicz to Slip Like the New York background, Sipowicz’s alcoholism is a cen- tral, if not explicitly mentioned, aspect of NYPD Blue. Sipowicz is an alcoholic, and we all know what that means. Or do we? “Yee doe here but sippe of this cuppe, but then ye shall drinke up the dreggs of it for ever.” —JOHN PRESTON (Breastplate of Faith and Love) NDY SIPOWICZ, our lion-hearted, lily-livered, existential hero, is an “alcoholic.” Sipowicz is drunk in the very fi rst episode of Athe series and wrestles with his alcoholism throughout the en- tire run of the show. Sipowicz’s alcoholism has wrecked his marriage, destroyed most of his relationships and by the end of the fi rst episode is on the verge of ruining his career. Many people struggle with alcohol problems; these problems mani- fest themselves in many ways and are solved—or not—in an equally wide variety of ways. As an expert in the fi eld of addiction and drug policy, I’ve studied the various techniques problem drinkers use to ad- dress their drinking—and the effectiveness of these techniques. I’ll get to this later, but fi rst I want to discuss the most widely known approach to addressing alcohol problems: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). 63 64 • JEFFREY SCHALER AA has been so successful in popularizing its approach to heavy drinking that many people don’t even realize that its approach is only one of many.

  • Leverage and Alcohol Addiction
1 Running head: THE LEVERAGE OF ALCOHOL ADDICTION The Leverage of Alcohol Addiction: A Textual Analysis of Leverage and the Limits of the Procedural Drama Thomas M. Gallagher Temple University 2 THE LEVERAGE OF ALCOHOL ADDICTION Abstract This paper confronts the question of whether messages can be diluted or even contradicted by the format in which they are delivered through a textual analysis of the TNT procedural drama Leverage, examining the portrayal of alcoholism in the program. The procedural drama, which often focuses on figures in law and order occupations, is characterized by close-ended episodes that often feature happy endings. Alcohol addiction has been a staple of many television programs, but these programs were mostly comedies or serial dramas. Leverage, a procedural drama with a light touch, is a modern day Robin Hood tale focused on five thieves led by an alcoholic protagonist. This paper finds that main character displays the expected negative effects of alcohol addiction but also displays positive qualities not often seen when the character is sober. The paper also examines the reactions of the protagonist’s closest colleagues to his addiction, and finds that these reactions, while prominent in the program’s first two seasons, are treated inconsistently in later seasons. The inconsistent treatment of this alcoholism in later seasons, the fantastical and often humorous nature of the program, and the procedural expectation of positive resolution to conflicts begun at the beginning of an episode often undercuts the program’s message about the dangers of alcoholism. This paper briefly contrasts the portrayal of substance abuse addiction in House, M.D., another program characterized by close-ended episodes and happy endings, with Leverage’s depiction of alcoholism.

Lotz1 Abstract This article considers the ideological significance of homophobic discourse as part of a sophisticated interrogation of homophobic outlooks in the FX series Rescue Me. It posits that a variety of narrative features enable a strategy of “working through” in which characters’ frank conversations and evolving perspectives depict the process of experiencing ideological challenge. Working through emphasizes the need for scholars to fully explore the internally contradictory narratives that are characteristic of the increasing complexity of some television storytelling and defies norms of critical media analysis that argue particular media texts either reinforce or resist dominant ideology. Cogent examination of other instances of working through could reinvigorate stymied intellectual spaces by insisting that scholars consider characters’ process of struggle with ideological perspectives throughout the unfolding of a series. Keywords television, gay, Rescue Me, homophobia, working through The FX television series Rescue Me (2004-2011) chronicles the post-9/11 lives of a fictional crew of New York City firefighters as they save lives, grieve the deaths of colleagues and loved ones, and negotiate their troubled personal relationships. Though the show primarily centers on the work and home life of Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary), its depiction of the brotherhood of Ladder Company 62 also offers considerable exam- ination of the lives of Chief Jerry Reilly, Lieutenant Kenneth “Lieu” Shea, Franco 1Department of Communication Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA Corresponding Author: Jimmy Draper, University of Michigan, 105 S.

Patrick McGrail, Ewa McGrail, Alicja Rieger Abstract Much has been written on the natures and personalities of teachers in educational research and publications (Carter, 2009; Beck, 2012; Bulman, 2015; Dalton, 2013; Gillard, 2012; Kelly & Caughlan, 2011). However, mass media can have a powerful influence on how people see teachers. The television series Breaking Bad (Gilligan, 2007-2013) and its representation of teachers, has contributed a unique – if warped -perspective on the subject of teachers and teaching in America.

Krug (1940–2009) Publisher: Barbara Jones Office for Intellectual Freedom, American Library Association ISSN 0028-9485 March 2011 Vol. LX No. 2 www.ala.org/nif Shortly after the fall semester began last year, Wesley Scroggins, a parent of three in Republic, Missouri, publicly criticized the local school district for carrying books that he described as soft-core pornography. “We’ve got to have educated kids, and we’ve got to be a moral people,” Scroggins said then. “I’ve been concerned for some time what students in the schools are being taught.” Parents have long raised concerns about school and library books—children’s and young adult books, and sometimes dictionaries—often for inappropriate content. The number of reported challenges in the past 30 years has hovered between about 400 or 500 each year, according to Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Associate Director of ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. school book But while challenges once were mostly launched by a lone parent, Caldwell-Stone has noticed “an uptick in organized efforts” to remove books from public and school libraries. A number of challenges appear to draw from information provided on websites challenges such as Parents Against Bad Books in Schools, or PABBIS.org, and Safelibraries.org. And the latest wrinkle: A wave of complaints around the nation about inappropriate increasingly material in public schools has stirred emotional argument over just how much freedom should be extended to students in advanced courses. Last year, a California parent objected to sex-related terms in a collegiate dictionary organized placed in a fourth- and fifth-grade classroom to accommodate advanced readers.

Jane Gibb and Roger Sabin | 29 May 2009 | 4-The Wire Files [May 09] Notes towards placing The Wire’s depiction of African-Americans in the context of American TV crime drama Critics have justifiably praised The Wire for its rounded African-American characters, and the risks it took in foregrounding ‘black Baltimore’ - risks that have harmed its ratings, according to its makers.1 They have concluded that the crime genre has been taken somewhere new. But how new is ‘new’? What the critics couldn’t do - weren’t tasked to do - was to contextualise the show in terms of the history of crime drama on TV. This article will therefore seek to survey a number of key shows from the past that purported to convey a liberal viewpoint, and which have made race a focus. This is in order to suggest ways in which The Wire might be part of a genre tradition - and equally how it might be seen as expanding the parameters of that tradition and saying something genuinely original.
