The past year saw a lot of findings and revelations that unsettled the society but on the other hand also mobilized the people and the media in a positive way. I consider this recognition to be crucial for further development. It brings us hope also in the current situation where we face a tremendous challenge posed by coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, let me express my strong belief that we will soon overcome the pandemic also thanks to all measures and we will be gradually returning to the original state and the positive economic growth. JOJ Media House experienced a very successful year. We strengthened our significant position in the Central European media market and the Group’s results have been getting better and better for several years in a row. Investments in advertising have increased year on year but we cannot expect the growth in the following year as a result of the ongoing pandemic. In our view, the important decision for the Group was to further expand our online media presence through the HyperMedia Group and our entry into the digital media agency PTA Group, broadening and diversifying our media portfolio. The year 2019 saw huge changes in the television industry. The media transfer of the decade took place when Petr Kellner bought CME Company’s television channels including Markíza. CME is thus leaving our market after more than twenty years. In 2019, the JOJ Group expanded its portfolio in the Czech Republic by becoming an owner of Československá filmová společnost and its five channels. Regarding the year 2019, I am very content with our television JOJ Group. We beat our competitors at viewership and the market share in primetime at the annual average. A strong autumn season was exceptionally successful as we reigned supreme in the market in an unrivalled way for the whole sec- ond half of the year, fulfilling our objectives unequivocally. I consider the last year successful in the sector of outdoor advertising as well. In Slovakia, it was particularly affected by presidential and parliamentary election campaigns. The changes in the metro advertising operators’ positions were extremely significant events. By winning the tenders, the BigBoard Group strengthened its position of clearly the largest OOH operator in the Czech Republic. Austrian Epamedia continues making substantial investments in innovation and digital advertising development with emphasis on environment and sustainability. I was also delighted with results achieved by our other companies like the Croatian newspapers or Radio Services which made their contribution to the Group’s historically best results. And finally, I would therefore like to thank our business partners and investors for their trust and particularly to all employees without whom we would not be able to develop our business and achieve the excellent results. Most importantly, I wish you all perfect health and success in the year 2020. This historical step has been one of the most important developments of the European Union. This is the frame of our subject, but before explaining and deepen in our perspective, we propose an introductory historical overview of the way in which the European Union itself has implemented its own building. The transformations of the countries that joined the EU in between 2004 and 2007 had to assume the political, legal and social, and also economical European frame in a very short period of time. Starting from an institutional perspective, EU insisted on the success of a strategy that was essential to prevent further fractures in the continent. By contrast, other points of view state and underline that the process has implied aggressive imbalances and gaps not actually solved. Information and communication have been involved in the process of European integration taking into account that this is an essential element of the concept of "European citizenship" and "democracy." However, this idea is paradoxical if we recall tensions between the demands and national needs developed in each member state, in contrast to the policies of convergence that are boosted by EU.

Therefore, I would like to thank our business partners and investors as well as all employees without whom we would not develop our business and achieve excellent results. Economic growth has positively affected the situation across the media segment. Even the last year, however, was full of changes and surprises. Slovakia was in the role of experimental rabbit when Facebook introduced a new news feed called the Explore Feed. It has driven not only agencies but also advertisers to reconsider their communication settings and to look for another alternative. Even the largest advertisers in the world, such as Unilever and Procter & Gamble, have been re-evaluating their approach and increasingly focusing on “brand safety”. They do not want their ad to appear alongside dubious or otherwise harmful content on the web. These are good news for traditional media; they represent stability and certainty, and their presence in the media mix is still very important.

Unfortunately, the year 2018 will remain the year of the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak, which reso- nated and still resonates across Slovak, but also foreign media. After these tragic events, the work of media and journalists has become much more intensely monitored by society. We have to believe that we are able to use this enormous power to help people in Slovakia live better. JOJ Media House had a very successful year and continues strengthening its significant position in the Central European media market. Advertising costs grew year on year, and we expect similar growth in the coming year. I consider the new regional periodicals “Petržalské noviny” and the very successful issue of five-year bonds in the past year as the most important events of our Group.

  • Promise Fulfilled? the Slovak Media System 20 Years After the Fall of Communism
Global Media Journal—Polish Edition No 1 (5), 2009 Promise Fulfilled? The Slovak Media System 20 Years after the Fall of Communism Dr. Branislav Ondrášik Introduction Slovakia can be characterized as having a lively, vivid and free news and media environment. However, this was not the case for the first five years of Slovak Republic’s existence. Until 1989, Slovakia was often criticized by the international community for a lack of freedom and slow progress in the build-up of civic society. Most of the blame was pointed at the authoritarian Prime Minister Vladimír Me čiar. Freedom House had at that time rated Slovakia only as “partially free”. Developments in Slovakia took a different shape as then opposition swept to power in the 1998 election and there was at least an effort to start a new era in communication among journalists, media managers and governmental officials. After 1998, Slovakia was constantly rated in Freedom House’s media rankings as “completely free”. The integrity of journalism and the media market is even more protected and stabilized after the country’s 2004 entry into the European Union. However, political pressures, especially through libel suits and the controversial new Press law, came to existence. In the 2006 election, a new government of social democrats (SMER), nationalists (Slovak National Party) and center-right HZDS of Vladimír Me čiar was formed under the leadership of Robert Fico. With the start of the new socialist government, politicians again tried to influence the press market. This is reminiscent of the government of Vladimír Me čiar. The current government, for example, is trying to gain leverage in the freedom of the press with stricter legal provisions (strict right for reply and/or correction 19 Global Media Journal—Polish Edition No 1 (5), 2009 in the new Press law).
