The smallest beetles and the smallest non-parasitic insects belong to the staphylinoid family Ptiliidae. Their adult body length can be as small as 0.325 mm and is generally smaller than 1 mm. Here we address the phylogenetic relationships within the family using formal analyses of adult morphological characters and molecular data, and also a combination of both for the frst time. Strongly supported clades are Ptiliidae + Hydraenidae, Ptiliidae, Ptiliidae excl. Nossidium, Motschulskium and Sindosium, Nanosellini, and a clade comprising Acrotrichis, Smicrus, Nephanes and Baeocrara. A group comprising Actidium, Oligella and Micridium + Ptilium is also likely monophy- letic. -

De Habrocerinae se incluyen dos especies y un género, de Phloeocharinae 13 especies y un género y de Trichophyinae 1 especie. Se señalan las correspondientes sinonimias. De cada una de las especies se indica la distribución iberobalear mediante mapas donde se señalan las provincias en las que se encuentran e igualmente se indican las categorías mundiales de su distribución. Catalogue of the Ibero-Balearic Habrocerinae, Phloeocharinae and Trichophyinae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) Abstract: A catalogue of the Ibero-Balearic Habrocerinae, Phloeocharinae and Trichophyinae, updated to 2009, is presented. It is based on De la Fuente’s work (1921, 1923). 2 species and 1 genera of Habrocerinae, 13 species and 1 genera of Phloeocharinae and 1 species and 1 species of Trichophyinae are included. The relevant synonyms for all these taxonomic levels are given. Ibero-Balearic distribution maps are included for each species, indicating the provinces where they are found and their world distribution. -

Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. Large grazing herbivores drive the ecology of the site and can have a profound impact on invertebrates, both positive and negative. Oxyporus bautistae shares with O. mexicanus Fauvel, 1865 the bicolored color pattern in legs (black and orange). The male of O. bautistae has six black spots on tergites and the female has only two black spots; but we cannot explain whether the number of black spots represents a sexual character or individual variation. The formation of the Ancient Tree Forum has brought together a wide range of disciplines involved in tree management and conservation, and has led to important cross-fertilisation of ideas which have enhanced the ecological understanding of the relationships between tree and fungal biology, on the one hand, and saproxylic invertebrates, on the other. This has had tremendous benefits in promoting good conservation practices. Summary The saproxylic beetle Index of Ecological Continuity (IEC) was originally developed as a means of producing a simple statistic which could be used in grading a site for its significance to the conservation of saproxylic (wood-decay) beetles based on ecological considerations rather than rarity. The approach has received good recognition by the conservation agencies and several important sites have been designated as a result of this approach to interpreting site species lists as saproxylic assemblages of ecological significance. The Index is based on a listing of the species thought likely to be the remnants of the saproxylic beetle assemblage of Britain’s post-glacial wildwood, and which have survived through a history of wood pasture management systems in certain refugia. -
