Plan a day in the life of Antonia Minor Learn about the emperor's family The Roman Emperor and his family were the most important family in ancient Rome. The women of the family were important role models to all Romans. Antonia Minor was the niece of emperor Augustus. This statue of Antonia in our museum shows her with an elaborate hairstyle. The diadem on her head indicates her role as a priestess. Plan a day in the life of Antonia Minor We know only a few things about her life. Using the facts on the next page, write a plan of the day for Antonia. Think about: • who helps her get dressed in the morning? • what gods might she pray to and when? • who might she visit? • what does she teach her children? • what important tasks does she have to do? What we know about her life • She had 3 children named Germanicus, Claudius and Livilla. Her husband, Drusus died soon after Livilla was born. Antonia was a widow for the rest of her life. • She was responsible for looking after the children's education. • She had a close relationship with Livia, Augustus' wife and her mother-in law. Antonia lived in Livia's house for a long time. • She was wealthy, and unlike most women had some freedom to spend her money. She lived in Rome, the centre of the Empire. • She probably had her own slaves, they would help her dress and make her hair. • Her son Germanicus and daughter Livilla died while she was still alive. Her younger son Claudius became emperor after her death. Activity Draw or write what you think Antonia Minor would get up to in a day. Women in Livy and Tacitus By Stephen Prevoznik Prevoznik 1 Introduction Livy and Tacitus are both influential and important Roman authors. They have written two of the most influential histories of Rome. Livy covers from the founding of Rome until the Reign of Augustus. Tacitus focuses on the early empire, writing from the end of Augustus’ reign through Nero. This sets up a nice symmetry, as Tacitus picks up where Livy stops. Much has been written about the men they include, but the women also play an important role. This essay plans to outline how the women in each work are used by the authors to attain their goals. In doing so, each author’s aim is exposed. Livy: Women as Exempla Livy’s most famous work, Ab Urbe Condita, is meant to be read as a guide.

A Rhetorical Use of Women in Tacitus’ Annales Jenifer M. Swindle This paper explores Tacitus’ use of women in his Annales. Though he speaks negatively of them, he cannot be considered misogynistic. He uses women rhetorically as reflections and extensions of men. Thus, his negative treatment of women can be seen more as a negative treatment of men. Swindle com- pares six women, and the men to whom they correspond. She discusses Tacitus’ intentions in the various ways he portrays these characters. She fur- ther points out that if readers of Tacitus focus their attentions on his female characters, they will be able to understand much of how he feels about their male counterparts. From his first mention of a woman—a parenthetical insinua- tion that Livia had a hand in the murder of her grandsons—it is clear that Tacitus’ treatment of women in his Annales will not be favorable.

CHAPTER FOUR VIPSANIA AGRIPPINA AND LIVILLA I, THE WOMEN OF THE FAMILY OF TIBERIUS Historical lrifonnation When Tiberius came to power in 14 A.D., he was an unmarried man without close female relatives of his own blood. There were, however, four women of his family who played key roles in his plans for succession and whose images consequently had a place in the public art of his principate. One of these, Antonia, was the mother of his adopted heir Germanicus, and therefore figured in some public sculptural groups of his time, as we have seen in the previous chap ter. The other three were his former wife Vipsania Agrippina, and his daughters-in-law Livilla I and Agrippina I. Tiberius attempted to suggest his dynastic plans subtly and discreetly to the Senate and public, as his treatment of his own mother has indicated: he was will ing to make use of her image on the coins of A.D. 22, for example, but not to institutionalize her role with official titles and privileges. None of the younger women of his family, therefore, appeared on coins at all during his principate, and we consequently lack the most useful form of evidence for their identifications in other media. 1 Antonia and Agrippina I have been identified with certainty in exist ing sculpture only because those women received the honor of repre sentation on coins at a later date, after the death of Tiberius. There is, however, some circumstantial evidence for the recognition of sculp tural portrait types of the other two.

Julia Vipsania Agrippina, Mother of Caligula and Daughter of M
BIOGRAPHIES AGRIPPINA THE ELDER (C. 15 BC - AD 33) Julia Vipsania Agrippina, mother of Caligula and daughter of M. Vipsanius Agrippa and Julia (daughter of Augustus). She married Germanicus around AD 5 and bore him nine children, six of whom survived infancy. She accompanied Germanicus to the Rhine frontier (14-16) and was with him in the East when he died (19). Widow of the popular Germanicus, and mother of four potential successors to Tiberius, she became a focus for senators who opposed the Praetorian Prefect Sejanus. Despised by Tiberius, she and her adherents came under attack in the late 20s, culminating in the arrest of Agrippina and her elder son Nero in 29. Convicted by the senate, Agrippina and Nero were exiled to the Pontian Islands, where they died in 33. Her younger son Drusus was arrested in 30 and died in prison in Rome in 33. Her youngest son, Caligula, survived her, as well as three daughters, Julia Agrippina, Julia Drusilla, and Julia. AGRIPPINA THE YOUNGER (AD 15 - 59) Julia Agrippina, eldest daughter of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder and sister to Caligula. She married Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus and bore him one son, Nero (the future emperor). She was honored along with her sisters Drusilla and Livilla during Caligula’s principate, but was implicated in the Lepidus-Gaetulicus “conspiracy” in AD 39 and banished with her sister Livilla to the Pontine Islands. Claudius, her uncle, recalled her from exile in 41 and married her in 49. She quickly became powerful (with the aid of Pallas, Seneca, and Burrus), receiving the title Augusta in 50 and persuading Claudius to adopt her son Nero.

Despite the vast amount of scholarly research regarding the imperial cult, few examine an important aspect of the cult: women, The emperor was not the only individual to receive the honours which are associated with the cult Although the role of women in the imperial cult is frequently overlooked, it is an essential aspect of the cult This thesis will examine the role of women in the cult of the emperor, specifically that of the Julio-Claudian women, The study of these women is particularly valuable as they were the first women to be included in the imperial cult. This dissertation attempts to determine the degree of autonomy and influence that the Julio-Claudian women had and to examine the factors that may have contributed to their exceptional influence. In trying to establish the extent and nature of the influence of the Julio- Claudian women, the ancient sources (literary, documentary and iconographic), in conjunction with modern scholarly views, were critically examined throughout. In attempting to determine the factors that influenced such weight and autonomy as these women had, the dissertation looks at the influences on women of earlier times, in particular the late Roman Republic, from a legal and a socio-historical angle.
