My three sisters, for keeping in touch. It made all the difference. I thank you all. (iii) ABSTRACT Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are considered to be the engine of growth for many economies. Their contribution to GDP and employment creation is significant in both developed and developing countries. The study sought to develop a growth taxonomy for SMEs in eThekwini Municipality Area. The main research instrument was a questionnaire aided by semi-structured interviews. Respondents ranked a number of variables and established that eight of these variables constitute the taxonomy. These variables are, namely: Innovation, The Business Plan, Training, Culture and Employees, Networking, Religious Beliefs, Relationships with Banks and Corruption. In addition, included in the taxonomy are Chinese companies and others which include Market Exposure, Sharing Information and Negotiation Skills. Measures of SME growth which are impacted upon by the mentioned eight variables are Sales Growth, Net Profit Growth and Employment creation. The study found out that both Chinese Public companies and SMEs make capital investments in Africa and do not intend to leave. Further, Chinese companies employ about 44 percent of local indigenous people in management positions. A major deterrent to SME growth in eThekwini is the high crime rate which needs to be curbed by both the Municipality and the South African government. The study further established that there is a positive correlation between the number of employees and sales turnover. In addition, there is also a positive correlation between the number of years in business and sales turnover, pointing to the learning curve effect. The more the number of years an entrepreneur spends in business the more the increase in the following year’s sales turnover. In conclusion, a number of recommendations and suggestions among which the following stand out; that South African universities should expedite commercialisation of patents in order to promote SME development and growth and the need to improve relationships between banks and SMEs regarding funding and collateral security. The study further noted that South Africa lags behind many other countries in supporting and encouraging women entrepreneurs and revealed the need for both the South African government and eThekwini Municipality to find ways of encouraging women participation in entrepreneurship and SME development. Poverty and inequality, exacerbated by unemployment are the country’s foremost challenges. The present government has made significant progress regarding the provision of basic services and broadening the social wage. However, the unfortunate reality is that inequality grew since the advent of democracy over twenty years ago. This development runs contrary to the commitments of the South African Constitution and social policy provisions, thereby raising more serious questions of rights and social justice. The continuity, depth and breadth of inequality, including the extraordinary financial and social costs is linked to the legacy of apartheid. Inequality is structurally embedded spatially and economically. Crucially, inequality is also a function of access to opportunities and human development outcomes. The paper attempts a theoretical discussion of the relationship between inequality, poverty and unemployment, which requires greater input; identifies some barriers to transformation; and presents tentative approaches towards lowering inequality. ABSTRACT The South African government has set as a policy objective the halving of poverty by 2014, although the meaning of this goal has not yet been defined. This article frames government’s stated target of halving poverty by 2014 in terms of specific measures of the poverty gap and poverty headcount ratio, using newly released income and expenditure survey data. With the poverty line as defined here, approximately half the South African population falls below the poverty line. Despite this, the aggregate poverty gap is surprisingly only about 3% of GDP. Projections of poverty in 2014 under various growth scenarios indicate that growth alone will be insufficient to halve poverty by that time, and that any worsening of distribution will put the target of halving poverty by 2014 beyond reach. However, projecting the effects of a range of growth and distributional scenarios indicate that halving poverty appears feasible with moderate growth rates and fairly mild pro-poor distributional change. The results are indicative as to the scale of distributional changes necessary to halve poverty under various growth scenarios. Keywords: income distribution, poverty, inequality, South Africa. Specifically this study examines Tanzanian albinios’ migration, acceptability and security challenges in Kenya and South Africa. The study was purely qualitative in nature, involving a hundred and forty-five persons with albinism (PWA) identified in Nairobi (Kenya) and Gauteng province (South Africa). Realities, myths, folktales and legends about albinos as both disabled and divine beings prevailed in the host communities in Kenya and South Africa. Comparatively socioeconomic factors such as income and educational attainment of PWA and their family members were major factors informing choices of destination and abode. This was evident in a number of affluent albinos living in South Africa. Nevertheless, acceptability and safety continue to elude PWA as spirit beings and strangers. They are left vulnerable as strangers and at best perceived as persons without identity.     2015 Facts & Figures AFRICAN URBAN DYNAMICS MO IBRAHIM FOUNDATION In the next 35 years, Africa will need to accommodate almost 900 million new urban dwellers, which is equivalent to what Europe, USA & Japan combined have managed over the last 265 years. Rwanda has the 2nd fastest urban growth rate in the world, after Oman. Cairo, Africa’s most populous city, manages a population that is larger than each of the 36 least populous countries on the continent. ¾ of Africa’s urban population is younger than 35. Almost ½ of Africa’s urban population lives in slums & informal settlements. Inequality in African cities is the 2nd highest in the world. Youth unemployment in Africa is 6 times higher in urban areas than in rural areas. In Kinshasa, there is only 63m of paved road per 1,000 inhabitants, as opposed to 1,000m per 1,000 inhabitants in developing countries. 61% of urban employment opportunities in Africa are informal. In Dakar, 1 million working hours are lost every day due to traffic congestion. In Lagos, there are 200,000 commercial motorcycles. Opened in September 2015, the Addis Ababa light rail carries 60,000 passengers per day. Around 1⁄3 of urban dwellers in sub-Saharan Africa have no access to electricity. 37 out of the 54 African countries are still more than 50% rural. In 2050, Africa is expected to host nearly ¼ of the global urban population. Between 1988 & 2012, Bangui has been flooded 7 times & Lagos 4 times. By 2050, it is estimated that Abidjan could lose $1 billion due to sea-level rise.

The construction of sexual violence against women by political and societal institutions in South Africa, including the media, has been shown to be harmful and negative. While there is a growing media scholarship that examines current printed news media themes of sexual violence against women, there is a gap in the literature that examines such themes within the apartheid printed news media. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the constructions of sexual violence against women in printed news media published during the apartheid era. Purposive sampling was used to collect archival printed news media articles on sexual violence from the SA Media electronic database, for the period of 1984 to 1994. The articles were analysed using qualitative thematic discourse analysis. Four themes emerged in the data: sexual violence against women as ‘alleged’, safety precautions as women’s responsibility, race and racism in reporting sexual violence and women as survivors. The findings of this study suggest that the printed news media during apartheid constructed and transmitted negative and harmful discourses of sexual violence against women, which have a range of negative influences and implications on public thought regarding sexual violence and women in general.
