Drinking Water Advisories in Canada In 2015, 78% of boil water advisoriesFootnote [1] in Canada were issued on a precautionary basis due to problems with drinking water equipment or processes. By contrast, boil water advisories issued due to the detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in drinking water samples accounted for 5%. Boil water advisories related to other microbiological water quality parameters, such as the detection of total coliform bacteria or unacceptable turbidity levels, accounted for 17% of total boil water advisories. 1 Tips and Tricks to Use in Your Home

Thermostats

To avoid high heating cost, keep your thermostat at a constant temperature such as 20° rather than putting it on full blast and then switching it off. Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors should be tested every year and make sure you change the batteries annually. New detectors should be purchased every 5 years. De-humidifiers Should be used and filters should be checked every 6-12 months to avoid moisture build up causing a number of problems including warping of floors.

Furnace Filters

By checking your furnace filters every 6 months*especially after renovations* you can avoid unnecessary ‘wear and tear’ so your machine runs efficiently and you steer clear of high heating costs.

Charcoal Filters

The hood fan filter above your stove should be cleaned out every 6 months so that it does not become clogged up. Clogging can cause motor failure and is a health concern because you are breathing in all the foods you have cooked since the last time you cleaned it. With some filters you are able to: remove them, soak them in hot water and pop them back on.

Tips and Tricks to Use in Your Home

Washroom Fans

To avoid moisture build up and mould you should keep your washroom fan on for the duration of your shower or bath and at least 15 minutes after. Washroom Fan ‘Tissue Test’

To make sure that your washroom fan is functioning properly you can perform this simple test: Take a square of tissue paper and hold it close to your fan. If the tissue is sucked towards your fan it is fully functioning. If not, the fan cover can be easily removed, cleaned by either vacuum or hand and placed back on.

Fridge Maintenance

You should avoid overfilling your fridge/freezer and or blocking the fridge fan. This causes your fridge motor to burn out. Vacuuming under your fridge at least once a year also prevents the fan underneath from malfunctioning due to excess buildup of dust and dirt.

Washers & Dryers

To steer clear of fires and general damage to your dryer, your lint trap should be checked before every load and cleaned after every load.

Your washer should go through a cleaning cycle every 3 months by running an empty load with bleach. This helps get rid of unwanted smells that might attach to your clothes and drain build up.

Drains

To avoid clogging your drain with hair you can purchase an easy to clean filter that fits to your drain.

Mould

For a simple at home remedy for minor mould problems you can use bleach. Simply wipe the infected spot until clean. PLEASE NOTE any major problems with mould should be dealt with by a professional. Musqueam Public Works and Housing Department September 14, 2018

PLEASE DO NOT DISPOSE OF ANY COOKING FATS, OILS, OR GREASE DOWN THE DRAIN!

The Musqueam Indian Band has experienced a sewer backup in two houses on the same street due to grease build up in the sewer lines. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN FATS OILS AND GREASE ARE PUT DOWN THE DRAIN? As seen in the picture fats, oils and grease that are put down your household drains cause problems further down the pipe as well resulting in a backup and blockages. Liquefied fats, oils and greases will solidify and clog pipes and contribute to blockages and blockages may cause a backup into your home.

FATS – DAIRY PRODUCTS, SALAD DRESSINGS, MARGARINE, SHORTENING, ETC

OILS - COOKING OILS (OLIVE, COCONUT, CANOLA, VEGETABLE) AND SAUCES

GREASE - MEET DRIPPINGS, LARD

When disposing Fats, Oils, and Grease:

• Pour all used cooking oils and grease into a small container so it can cool and harden. • When the container is full, cap the container or cover it tightly, place in a bag to prevent leakage and put in garbage container. • Dry wipe all pots, pans and plates before washing in sink or dishwasher. Use paper towels and wipe grease and food contents into a garbage container. • If you have a kitchen sink garbage grinder, use this as little as possible since food particles and grease from the grinded material will still clog your pipes and affect the downstream sewer system. Topic: UBC Vancouver, Campus Safety and Security logo/badge

Submitted by: Connor Barnsley

Purpose: Invitation to discuss the possible inclusion of Musqueam representation into the UBC Vancouver Campus Safety and Security logo/badge.

UBC Vancouver, Campus Safety and Security’s mandate is to create a safe and welcoming environment for all people, inclusive of students, faculty, staff and the community at large. In saying this, Campus Safety and Security(CSS) team also recognize the importance of acknowledging that the UBC Point Grey campus is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people.

To meet the mandate of the department and support ‘Shaping UBC’s Next Century’ strategic goal of ‘partnering with Indigenous communities on and off campus to address the legacy of colonialism and to co-develop knowledge and relationships’, CSS has begun to identify areas where the team can increase awareness and knowledge of historical impacts, current issues of Indigenous peoples and support the relationship between UBC and the Indigenous and Musqueam communities.

One initiative that has arisen for consideration is the rebranding of the CSS logo and security badge for uniforms. CSS would like to meet with Musqueam representatives to discuss the possibility of inclusion of Musqueam representation for this and how this may add to the welcoming and respectful environment we wish to create.

The CSS department welcomes an opportunity to enhance the Musqueam perspectives within the mandate of their work and to improve the current relationship by seeking guidance for this and future initiatives and directions.

Graduate Student Society, October 2018

UBC’s Graduate Student Society is asking for an upcoming Musqueam artist to work with a team from the GSS to design a new logo that will represent the Society. This project is part of the Society’s commitment to shedding their old visual identity that was appropriated from the Haida First Nation

Purpose:

The purpose is to design a logo that will be central to the visual identity of UBC’s Graduate Student Society, which represents 10,000 graduate students. For many years the Society used a logo that was taken from the The Ts’aahl Eagle clan, a Haida clan from the west coast of Haida Gwaii. When this cultural appropriation was discovered the Society made the decision to abandon that design and to seek reconciliation with the Ts’aahl. As part of the process of reconciliation the society committed to a new visual identity that recognises our place on the traditional, unceded, and ancestral territory of the Musqueam people. We also hope that the design will help educate our students (many who are international) about the history of First Nations in what is now .

Opportunity:

The artist would work closely with the staff and elected executives of the society in producing a design that is appropriate for the society’s role as a representative organisation for students. The artist will receive payment for their work and the sincere appreciation of the Society. Although the old ‘seamonster’ logo was rightly abandoned the GSS has felt lost without a visual symbol.

What type of design are you looking for:

We are open to a dialog with any artist about what is feasible. We would hope that a design could incorporate elements from Musqueam visual identity, traditional forms or language.

• The design needs to be flexible, so it can be used in a range of media – online, print and on merchandising. • The design should not be so elaborate that it is difficult to reproduce or resize • The design should ideally be monochrome and capable of being used in either white or black / colour. Our current word-mark is used in white black and a dark blue version to fit the rest of our color palette. • In terms of format, InDesign and large image files PNG would be preferred, so we can manipulate them easily. • We’re happy to be led by an artist in terms of design elements, but we’d like something that fits with the aims of society, which are to build a community based on friendship and support for the graduate student community. • Although we’re on the UBC campus we a separate organisation, so there is plenty of scope to be creative. • As we had used the previous logo for more than 30 year we’d like something that has a more modern feel than the old ‘seamonster’. We would like the new logo to remain the symbol of the GSS for the foreseeable future • The GSS Marketing and Communications Director will be on hand to guide the process although the design will need to be submitted to the GSS Executive Team for final approval.

• Payment: • We are happy to pay in full for any artist’s time based on their normal charge-out rate.

PLEASE SUBMIT A STATEMENT OF INTEREST/ STATEMENT OF CONCEPT TO BEN HILL AT THE GRADUATE STUDENT CENTER AT: Ben Hill [email protected] or Leona Sparrow at [email protected]
