In 2009, Willumsen penciled an issue of Mike Allred’s Madman, and in 2010 he drew three covers for Dust to Dust, Boom’s prequel to their comics adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Perhaps Willumsen’s most notable contribution to genre comics, however, was his art for “Where the Devil Don’t Stay”, written by Jason Latour for Untold Tales of Punisher Max #2 (2012). Latour’s story, about a family of redneck criminals who capture the Punisher and then fall apart while arguing over what to do with him (kill him or deliver him to a crime syndicate?) is Eisnerian in its focus on disposable supporting characters instead of the marquee lead. The Punisher doesn’t speak a word in this comic, and his face is cloaked in shadow. He’s only a MacGuffin, a narrative pretext that creates homicidal dissention among the rednecks.

  • When the Abyss Looks Back: Treatments of Human Trafficking in Superhero Comic Books
When the Abyss Looks Back: Treatments of Human Trafficking in Superhero Comic Books BOND BENTON AND DANIELA PETERKA-BENTON Superheroes and Social Advocacy Superhero comic book characters have historically demonstrated a developed social awareness on national and international problems. Given that the audience for superhero characters is often composed of young people, this engagement has served as a vehicle for raising understanding of issues and as a tool for encouraging activism on the part of readers (McAllister, “Comic Books and AIDS”; Thibeault). As Palmer-Mehta and Hay succinctly state: (They) have addressed a number of pressing social and political issues in narratives through the years, including alcohol and drug abuse, racism, environmental devastation, gun control, and poverty. In the process, they have provided a rich tapestry of American cultural attitudes and philosophies that reflect varying approaches to issues that continue to haunt, confound, and rile the American public (390). The relationship of the superhero to topics of ongoing public concern appears to have been present even in the earliest days of the form. In Action Comics #1, Superman attacks a man abusing his partner stating “…tough is putting mildly the treatment you’re going to get! You’re not fighting a woman now!” (Siegel and Shuster 5). On the cover of Captain America Comics #1, the Captain is shown punching Adolf Hitler over a year before the Pearl Harbor attack at a time when non-intervention was a commonly held public sentiment (Jewett and Lawrence). In 1947, the popular Superman Radio Show produced the “Clan of the Fiery Cross.” Superman’s successful defeat of the KKK was heard by over five million The Popular Culture Studies Journal, Vol.

Assessment for the Western Pond Turtle Final Report Client: United States Fish and Wildlife Service Primary Advisor: Brad Shaffer Secondary Advisor: Peter Scott Team Members: Zachary Devereux Hogan Fenster Stephanie Manzo Thomas Morgan Griffin Nicholson Delacey Rodriguez Bianca Sanchez University of California, Los Angeles Executive Summary Western Pond Turtle Report June 2019 The western pond turtle (WPT), recently separated into two species, is a candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. To assess the current status of both species, we conducted a risk assessment and analysis of historical, current, and future conditions. Background This assessment for the WPT compiles the best available literature, scientific information, museum data, and population viability analyses to characterize the biological status of the two species: Emys (Actinemys) pallida and Emys (Actinemys) marmorata. The goal of this assessment is to inform the listing decision for the two species under the federal Endangered Species Act, and to act as a source of information for future conservation efforts. Species Biology and Needs The WPT occurs in a variety of semi-aquatic habitats ranging from lakes, rivers, and streams to man-made channels, agricultural ponds, and sewage treatment ponds. Emys pallida can be found from northern Baja California, Mexico to the southern San Francisco Bay area along the coast and inland deserts. It can be found along the Southern Coast Ranges and the western parts of the San Joaquin Valley. Emys marmorata can be found from the San Francisco bay area north to Washington state and south along the eastern side of the San Joaquin Valley. The WPT is a medium sized pond turtle that has a maximum life span of about 45 years (Holland 1994, p.

These roles range from maintaining productive coral reef ecosystems to transporting essential nutrients from the oceans to beaches and coastal dunes. Major changes have occurred in the oceans because sea turtles have been virtually eliminated from many areas of the globe. Commercial fishing, loss of nesting habitat and climate change are among the human-caused threats pushing sea turtles towards extinction.

  • Comiccritique.Com Three Hundred and Twenty Million Followers
ComicCritique.Com Three Hundred and Twenty Million Followers Democracy was meant not to work, because dynamic systems are fixed by their own glitches. This is the genius of the, yes, virus that America’s founders released. You can trademark an idea but you can’t keep people from having it. The ideas proliferate like a benevolent critical mass in Prez, the best new comic of the year, based on one of the craziest comics ever made. The original (by Joe Simon and Gerry Grandenetti, who are offensively uncredited so far — ideas do belong to somebody at the start), the original is one of those things that barely happens but people never forget: a youthsploitation fantasy about a hip, teenage lefty president right after the height of the counterculture of the 1960s/early-’70s. It had five issues, and four even came out, but like the promise of liberty, it’s caught fire ever since, with a beautiful, sadly utopian issue of The Sandman by Gaiman and Michael Allred reconceiving it, and a fantastic early opus by Ed Brubaker and Eric Shanower, the one-shot Smells Like Teen President, updating it for the early-1990s social malaise. Prez’s benevolent rule is a future that never happened but, in its weight upon our consciousness, never goes away.
